Hi, In the last few months or so I've got hold of a few vacs that I thought I would share. I've been meaning to post pics of them for a while now but just never got round to posting the pics....
1st up is a 1970s Goblin 702... I quite like it. It's quite weighty as well. It's also not to badly built as well for a cheaper vac. I have the hard floor tool and crevice tool for it somewhere as well...

Next we have a 1980s Hotpoint Super. My uncle and aunt had one of these and it has taken me ages to find another which was the same model/colour. I had the beige version of this but wanted the burgandy version as it's what my uncle and aunt had. Nice cleaner. I have the attachment for this as well somewhere... They attach to the back of the cleaner. The long handles on these use to break. Hence not many of them around now.

Nice collection! My 412 is still sat in the loft waiting for you to want it! It has no supressor though, it crumbled away so some solder and heatshrink filled in the missing link. Must get it out soon for a play. Loving the 4x4! |

Hi James,
Glad to see you still around these parts - you don't pop up anywhere near as often as you should! Some great cleaners there, pleased you've managed to get some funky ones for the collection. Those Hotpoint uprights, despite the brittle handle, are actually pretty good vacuums. Our local community centre had the cream model for years, but sadly it was replaced by a Vax Rapide. Hope you're well, Chris |

Pardon me for being "slightly" obsessed with Eureka vacs, but....:-)
The carpet nozzle on your Goblin 702 looks suspiciously like the classic Eureka Williams carpet nozzle sold over on this side of the pond in the 1960's and 70's. Is that tool original to the vac? If yes, there must have been some production contract between Goblin and Eureka Williams or Sweden's Electrolux post 1974.... Verrrrry interesting! |

Hi Chris, yep I'm still around. Just been busy. I've got theses vacs over a period of time but only just got round to posting the pics.
Hi Sam, I've not forgot about the 412. I've just got my car MOT and Car tax coming up and I'm trying to be careful with what I'm buying... Plus I need to save up for a new Kirby Sentria 2 as well.
Hi Mr G, I've not got round to testing the Electrolux 330. I'll have to find 3 or 4 DD batteries and try it out. It is missing the floor tool though. Then again it cost bugger all
Hi Brian, I have no idea if Goblin and Eureka have some kind of link but I know the head is original to the machine as the same head is shown in adverts of the time for this cleaner.
Hi Doug, What does the Goblin 141 look like? Where did you get it?

Here is a Goblin cylinder that I was given a week or two ago. I managed to find the picture of it. The hose is in good condition but it leaks air bad. You can feel a draft from the end of the nozzle when it's running. The suction feels OK when you detach the hose from the cleaner it's self. I'm not sure how old it is either. I'm sure Doug will know...

Interesting James! Goblin either stole or bought the design for Eureka Williams' classic carpet nozzle. When you have a chance, could you possibly post a close up of the underside of the attachment? Would be interesting to see if the bottom is the same design as well - Eureka offered a chrome metal shoe on their 1960's carpet nozzles.

Hi James, Did you ever get a plug put on that goblin cylinder in reply #19? You know the one you stole off me on the eBay auction... Not that I actually bidded, but wanted to! |

702 - " ....for a cheaper cleaner" - not a bit of it!
This cleaner was around from the mid-1960s and was unusual for its time that the case is of all plastic construction. From the Which 1968 report its price is noted at £39/18/- which makes it almost three pounds more than the Lux 100 which it was designed to compete with, although the 100 had actually more advanced features. But this cleaner was defiantly at the top of its price bracket. Brian - whilst I can see the resemblance with the Eureka nozzle, I doubt that it was copied by Goblin - the impression is heightened by how the body of the nozzle has discoloured differently from the coupling. I would need Doug to confirm but I think this style of nozzle dates back to 1956 Ak |

Don't forget that the 702 was the second version of this cleaner, there was model 701 before it. I remember very well the first time I saw it which was on the old "Take Your Pick" TV show (with Michael Miles) - it was "Tonight's Star Prize" and how they demonstrated the suction control (air release valve) on the top front of the cleaner. That's how I can date it to 1966, funny how, nearly 50 years later I have such a clear memory of it. I was very surprised to see that it was still on sale in 1977, as shown in this brochure with the Housemaid |

This would have been introduced against the Lux 90, which at the time was a new level of sophistication in the vacuum market. However it was something of a lame attempt as the tools and such were the same as those on the cheaper 601 model, which largely competed against the Lux 65 and Hoover Harlequin (419). The Lux 90 (and the later, similar 100) did not have a serious contender against it until the Hoover Conquest in 1969. There were some other like the Nilfisk and Hoover Portable but neither of these proved to be "mainstream" cleaners.

That link did not work. I will try again. Vacbear, it is your pictures I am attempting to show. I see you have a 701. Apart from the hose, how does the cleaner differ from a 702? CLICK HERE TO GO TO vintagerepairer's LINK |

Hi Adam, I bought both of those gold Kirby's off another collector a few years ago now. I don't think he's on here anymore. My friend Ken won a gold Generation 3 back in 1990 but Kirby would not let him have it till the Generation 3 was on sale over here in the UK. He had it on display in his service center but it got taken when he was broke in to one night...along with all his NIB kirbys as he was a factory distributor still at the time My other friend Nick who won the 3rd off the production line Heritage(Which I own now) also won a gold G5.
Hi Brian, I've took a pic of the underside of that head for you. I just need to up load the pic
Hi Al, When I said a cheaper cleaner I was basing what I said on the 1976 prices as Goblin always seemed to be the cheaper of options compared to the Electrolux's and Hoover's of the time. As Argos was selling the Goblin 702 £35.95 the Hoover Freedom 1000 at £54.95 and the Electrolux 345 at £48.95.
Hi Mr G. Nope still not touched that Goblin yet. I'll let you know when I've sorted it.

Thank you for posting that scan of the Argos catalogue. I don't doubt that by 1976 it would have been cheaper than the Lux 345 or Hoover Freedom 1000 - by this time it was so far behind them in terms of specification that I don't see how they could have charged a similar amount. But eight years earlier the position is very different as you will see below - I have included the 602 just for comparison. What surprised me was that they were still producing it in 1976 (and actually until at least 1977) as they had the lower line 502 & 602 models (except, apparently, some electricity board exclusives) for the budget priced models with the front mounted handle. Unfortunately I do not know when the 701 was replaced by the 702, nor more than superficial differences. The 701 would have had a braided hose (white/turquoise) as on other models where, as can be seen from the Argos scan above, it is now similar to that used on the on the 555. Curiously, the more upmarket version of the 555, the 666, appears to have a hose similar to the Hoover stretch hose which you would have thought the TOL 702 would have had, and a flip-over tool that looks (I am not saying it is identical) very similar to the Electrolux flip over version. It strikes me that the 702 may have also have lost the polishing tool which as Benny noted, could have contributed to the reduction in cost. That polishing tool is a curiosity to me. Whilst I was aware of the Lux version and indeed they do pop up on ebay, I have never seen any reference to any such tool in ANY Goblin cleaner that I can recall. I do wonder if it was something rather like a soft mop head attached to a floor nozzle instead of bristles which I have seen on some European cleaners and also the Australian Connie but this is just speculation.
