Hey guys,

Must be the week of boxed cylinders. Picked up this little beauty tonight. Doesn't seem to have had much use. It's date December 1992.

I'm massively impressed with the condition of this one. It looks barely used. Whilst the Miele I got showed some minor signs of use, apart from having some dust in the bag, this has virtually NONE.

Hi Will,

Welcome to the site! Glad you found us and sorry I couldn't help out with the Turbopower. Glad you managed to find a Turbomaster though, those are one of, if not THE best carpet cleaners you can find.

Looking forward to getting to know you more :). Make sure you get some pics of that TM up when it arrives!

All the best,
Chris

I'm sure you'll have a hoot on here, Will. There is a LOT of knowledge and information and some great people to meet :).

Anyway, back to the Dolphin's.

Bit of info:

The Dolphin's first appeared in 1989 alongside the original Lite. The Dolphin replaced the 2000 series as Lux's TOL cylinder. I believe this model was a mid-range model having variable power and the 1200w boost. There was a model above this, I believe, that was dark grey and came with a remote hose.

The Dolphin went through very few style changes, apart from being updated in colour (later models came in royal blue and red).

The Dolphin was superseded in 1996 by the Ingenio/Harmony cleaners.

changes

Though the changes to the Dolphin cleaners was subtle, one such alteration came in the form of the tool storage, which went from a tray on top of the dustbag to a proper storage area inside the lid. It was accessed via a flap in the top of the lid and allowed the user to take out the tools without switching off the cleaner. This was not possible on the previous style.

I am not sure whether this design change was applied to all existing colours available at that time, or to newer models only. However, I do seem to have a memory that the top-range purple clean at least was seen in both variations.

Harmony

This model was available through Great Universal Stores as early as Spring 1994. It is hard to say which model replaced the Dolphin specifically, because in throughout the 1990's Electrolux were selling so very many different models, a good deal of which having the same as features as another. Utterly pointless. I always considered that the two models in the 4X4 range were the ones which replaced the Dolphin as they had the most similarities, such as physical size, features, and so on. But I think also the Harmony was a fair match for the more basic Dolphin cleaners.

I remember my nan having one back in 1989.She got it new from (i think) S&S Electrics..A small shop down in the town from where she lived. It was the dark grey model with speed control on the Handle. I also vaguely Remember Her having a Hoover Turbopower Autoflex at the same time..She got that i think around 1985/1986 when i was just a baby in arms. Unknown where from on that tho :-)

grey

The grey model you speak about was actually purple. The lilac Hoover Turbopower and Turbomaster cleaners from the same time had the identical colour small tool and dusting brush as the Dolphin.

Will, do you remember which Autoflex it was? If she got it in 85, it was likely the blue U2198. If it was 86, it could've been the infamous "glass" red U2336

Post# 236395 , Reply# 20   6/13/2013 at 15:49 (3,940 days old) by gwillim ()

I think it was the blue one...I seem to remember soverign or something like that on the front but im sure it was actualy a turbopower as it looked identical and was made by Hoover. Im guessing a rare machine?

I don't think the Sovereign was ever actually sold here. Only a few are dotted about and those were imported from the US. The Sovereign was almost identical to the U2198 apart from the branding.

I maybey thinking of someone elses vac then. But my nan certainly had the blue turbopower. I remember being scared of it as a little one lol.Hope to get hold of a Dolphin myself someday. Great luxes.

Controversial statement coming folks...Hoover fans, avert your eyes...

Will, I actually much prefer vintage Electrolux's over vintage Hoover's. Especially the 500 and Twin Turbo series uprights. They just seem to perform equally as well on carpet and yet are so much lighter to use, more convenient and have the better filtration.

Here is a pic of the U2198. Sorry it's not the best pic.

aha! This is the bruiser! Yep she had that one. I have to agree with you on that chris..The Electroluxes are great machines also. I have a Electrolux contour Flexihead that i want to possibly swap for a hoover turbo or hoover junior.. I over did it a while back and had loads of luxs and now want some hoovers instead for a change. It does need the brushroll sorting mind and i can not find one to save my life to replace the current one thats in it. Other than that it is in great condition and performs well. If you know of anyone wanting to swap then let me know ;-)

Contour

turbo500's profile picture
I was never a massive fan of the contour. Apart from a more modern design, I thought they were a hugh step backwards from the 600 series that came before it. Between the Contour and Hoover Turbo 2, it would be one of the only times I went with the Hoover.

Contour

When it came to style, the Electrolux Contour lacked the refinement of the 600 and make no mistake. Despite this, the build quality was significantly greater. I saw many a cleaner from the 600 range which was just too expensive to repair due to the number of broken parts which required replacement. I used to dread getting them in for repair, because unless it was for a blocked hose, a belt, or a new lead, or similar, I'd end up spending time stripping the cleaner down only to find half a dozen or more broken parts which needed to be replaced. Few if any customers ever wanted to spend the money, and I can't say I blame them either, but that left me with having to put the thing back together, and in some cases left with the cleaner too if they didn't come back.

The Turbopower 2 and 1000 cleaners were something else altogether, because apart from a very narrow hose which was liable to block, these cleaners were built like a tank. Very unusual for the time.

Benny, I was more refering to the performance. The Contour just didn't cut it like the 600 did, mainly due to quite an underwhelming brushroll and that friction fit ridiculous handle release on the earlier models that ALWAYS broke.

I agree about the Turbo 2 and 1000, apart from the earlier models were prone to the bag door's splitting down the middle, but this issue seemed to be ironed out on the later models.
