Hi everyone. Fred and I were in Milwaukee this weekend visiting his family and we broke away for a few hours to have dinner with Patrick, his partner John as well a Tania. Tania had mentioned to me that she couldn't find that Westinghouse Vacuum commercial that was posted on YouTube a few months back. I told her that I would find it and post it for her and everyone else to enjoy again.

When I saw this commercial I knew it was in the public domain as well as very rare and special so I purposely downloaded it and re-uploaded to the automaticwasher video account so we all could enjoy it forever.

Here it is:

The link below will take you to the actual video on YouTube if you prefer...

What a fun video! I'd **LOVE** to know what the other three makes were, but there's no way to tell. Even the bags were concealed when the ladies brought them over to be weighed.

I would bet...

GE, Eureka and maybe Lewyt, Im about sure they wouldnt go against a Electrolux or Compact, and certainly not a Filter Queen, those Westinghouses were pretty good, they built there own motor.

The machines....

Machine (A) is a Hoover. That adjustable wand collar available on the first Constellations gives it away. Also the slinky hose as the lady is vacuuming back and forth does kinda give away the Veriflex hose too.If you pause the clip at about 2:01 you can see the middle wand collar, and the thumb valve on the handgrip too...

Machine (B) is a Lewyt. The huge rubber wand socket ends are pretty visible as the wand lays on the floor at 2:26,and the hose is a darker color. Possibly from the Golden Lewyt? That had the green spiralelectric style hose. To qualify, the only ones using those same thing (wand collars) to my knowledge that used a bag was Lewyt. The others were Filter Queen, Modern Hygeine and Royal. These three can pretty much be disqualified as in 1956 (they year Im assuming this was shot) Neither of the Royal canisters had a paper bag, the MH if it did, had a round sac like liner, and the Queen uses the cone system. So. And none of the others had a vinyl hose then either.

Machine (C) just does not give you enough, and you don't see enough to really get what it is. From what you can see, I want to say Kenmore OR AirWay. But again, for that one particularly, there are no quick identifiers to be had. Except for Air-Way should be disqualified as their fibre filter bag, with the sewn in round fiber collar woulda stuck out like a sore thumb. So...

That's my thoughts...

Chad

I think machine 3 is a Kenmore canister. It was around the same price as a Westinghouse, and would have been it's closest competitor at the time.

Re Royal...

The Royal tanks and canisters had disposable bags by this time.

That may be, but they werent bags in the sense or style like you see on the scale. One was a big round style for their pot can with a huge open mouth, and the othr one woulda looked like the liners for the Electrolux 30. So neither of them would fit the clues anyway. I think Tom hits it that it was a then current Kemmore. I think it is too...

Respectfully,

Chad
