Well, some time tonight, Rob Shore and Bill Wood (Tazcatsdad) are arriving . Tomorrow, after Mass (I'm lectoring), Matt will join us for a mini meet. Mike Gravelin just called and can't make it (auto problems). Also, Joe Kassock can't make it this time due to a family party. This one will be much more casual and informal (Fiesta dishes vs Lenox). We'll have an all-American cookout: Hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni salad, slow-baked Boston baked beans with bacon. Of course, Bill will finally taste some Pittston Hospital iced tea. It will be a fun little gathering. Pictures will follow, I'm sure. LAST week, it was 60 degrees. This weekend, 93. Yikes!I have an arsenal of HOOVERs out and ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, Kids, a progress report.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
Bill arrived last night, and brought some 'fab' vacs with him. (Some were from across the POND". After some Irish sodabread, we went to the 12:15 Mass. Matt then arrived, and we played with wonderful machines. We all enjoyed authentic "New York egg creams", which contain neither eggs nor cream (discuss). Neither of them had ever had one before.
We've somewhat turned this into an "international mini-meet". As the "Brits" love their tea time, we send an affectionate "nod" to them, by having tea, and sodabread, as we don't have any scones or crumpets. We did this, as I am privileged to have so many machines from PERIVALE and CAMBUSLANG here in my home. Only the finest china would do. ok, ok, ok here's a little peek.

We fed Zippy and he went right to the vacuums. He played with a HOOVER Celebrity II Elite. He was in Heaven. He just got a job working for "Filter Queen !!!!!! However, we ALL know where his heart lies. The joy on his face with these HOOVERS is FAR different from when he'd be using said "Queen". Dinner was very nice. Later, HOOVER milkshakes! Yum!! We let him do his "demo" for the Filter Queen. I have my own HOOVER dirt meter. We put it on a 1964 Convertible. It pulled out lots of dirt. Granted, this hall runner was destroyed by the carpenters (never took up that rug). Then, we used a Decade 800. Poor ZIPPY sat in defeat. Yes, the 1964 Convertible and a 1980's Decade 800, and a Concept beat the arse off the F. Queen. Tom...... another TRIUMPH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Do I bash? NO. But, do I gloat??? Al! Thanks for the info.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
And, you are so right. Had I known about the vac from France, I'd have made crepes on one of the HOOVER crepe makers. 3 years ago, we had HOOVER fondue, one with cheese and bread, the other with chocolate and fruit.

Rick B called during the festivities, and Mike and Loel called. Joe K missed it. So, we even had members in 'absentia'.
Bill and Rob woke up early, as I had to get to school. WE had fruit, coffee, (h chocolate for me) juice and sodabread. Then, they went up the street, and I went down. It is a humid 70 degrees here today. I believe it's going to rain (looks like a 4 Excedrine Monday).WE all had a great time. They know they are welcome back anytime. That'll be it for the minimeets for a while. The convention is rapidly approaching. Zippy is moving, so he is storing a few HOOVERS here. MAYBE he'll get them back!
Minimeets are always fun things to attend and host. They can be simple or much more involved, like the last one. They can be a lot of work, especially when you do them by yourself. There is NO ONE behind the scenes organizing these, contrary to rumor. The guys will post more pictures soon, I'm sure.
Upon leaving, Bill gifted me an electric knife and a HOOVER Junior. Perhaps he was just grateful that he survived his first meet unscathed. They'll be cherished here along with vacuums like the one that belonged to our dear "Terry". Stay tuned....................

15 minutes worth of vacuuming with a brand new Filter Queen........and all of THIS is what ONE SINGLE PASS of a Hoover Model 70 pulled out. Shame, shame.

To be fair....

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
The 'good carpets' produced only red and creme carpet fibers...all had to agree.
The hallway carpet was left there by the carpenters during the demolition, construction. I though I'd have to replace it. I don't think so now. it looks practically brand new. Rob was 'beside himself' at the discovery of what those HOOVERS did in comparison to his 'demo' unit. Ah, well................. all is well at the palace.as Mike calls it. It's been called a LOT of things.
Rob's supervisor (on the phone) was a bit surprised to hear that the 'client' had a tester...and used it! His advice to Rob concerning my home visit was, "Forget it, he beat you'. And, this guy had THAT many cleaners? He's crazy. I've been called THAT recently by another, or two as well. Am I worried? Nope. "Boss" would be so pleased.

So this 'palace' had a lot of royalty this weekend

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
But it wasn't a 'Filter Queen".
HOOVERS from both sides of the 'pond' were in full swing. Bill brought an adapter, but the circuit breaker tripped twice. Once was that F Queen. That could be called a Royal "flush".....Sorry, HAD to..........

If I had to describe my first mini-meet in one word ...

tazcatsdad's profile picture

... it would be awesome with a capital A!  I had so much fun -- and John is an absolutely wonderful host!  I'm so blessed and honored to have made his acquaintance.  Rob and Matt, you both were truly a joy to meet and I do hope that our paths will cross again very soon.

Greg, I think that would be a splendid idea!  We are indeed very close to one another residence-wise, so we shouldn't have a problem working out logistics at all.  Please feel free to contact me!

I have some pictures to share of this weekend as well, but since this is the first opportunity that I've had to really relax since getting home from PA I will post them either tomorrow or Wednesday.  Right now -- time to call it one of the best days I've ever had.

I never check the vintage forum because I am more interested in contemporary machines, but when I remember to, I'm always amazed at what I find!  John, it looks like another success...  who can beat good food and fun vacuums and friends and kitties thrown in the mix just for good measure.  Makes me remember the few times I was able to attend mini-meets at Terrys...

In that first Convertible picture, I used to have one like the one on the left... it was a wild turquoise color... the brushroll didn't have any beater bars and the handle was the same shape as a non-power drive Concept.  I gave it to someone who really needed a vacuum when I was moving and I don't know what ever became of it.

Nice to get the other perspectives as well!  Btw, Bill, I like your youtube vidoes  :o)

Thanks Bobby!  I'm going to have to start doing them again.  It's been a while since I've made any, and I have some new machines to make videos of -- especially some of my recent European acquisitions!

WE heard that Rob,(Zippy)

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
finally made a Filter queen sale. I doubt they had a HOOVER in the house. Yes, malts, etc.. a LOT of things Zippy has never tried before. The list goes on, I'm sure.
WE'll have to look into another mini meet, perhaps in the Fall, again, like last October's " Monster Mash Bash". There'll be another guestroom finished by then (please , God). It's very rare, but nice, to have people staying here. The house used to have 7 people living in it. Now, there's just the two cats and myself. The neighbors will know I've had company again when they see all of the bedsheets out on the line. My Chinese neighbor saw the 2 lines full one day and said, "Oh, such a clever use for all that string". uhuh.......
I hope to put some mini meet photos in my book that I'll take to the convention.

Sounds like a good meet! Wish these happened over here more! Could fit my whole collection into my car (so I either have a big car or a small collection...)

turbopower

I was just wondering if you were able to have a look at the brush roll of the turbo power which is rather different to the "traditional" style. Did US Hoovers post 1983 (or so) have a modified brush roll?

Al, I didn't think to look that carefully.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
I'll get a bunch of mine out, flip them over and show photos. You'll get a good look at lots of different machines. There ARE some rather obvious difference betwen 'yours' and 'ours'. Even having the 'Rangers' together, side by side, shows how similar AND dis-similar they really are . I've even npoticed differences in the tolls (attachments). I just got a brand new bare floor brush in from Ed Shenkle in North Canton. They are clearly different. Someday, I'd love to gewt one of those floor nozzles that 'flip', like an Electrolux. HOOVER never carried them here. It's 'on my list'.

Comparisons

vacbear58's profile picture
John

It would be really interesting to know - actually I could do some of that here as I have a US made 4003 to compare with UK rangers too. Looking at all the rangers early on in the thread it looks like the handle might be somewhat shorter - which I think stems from using essentially the same handle for both the Junior and Senior models (at least for part of the series), which accounts for the flex/cord being on the opposite side, The shape of the hand grip, the foot switch etc ..... And of course a UK Hoover makes carpets not rugs last longer.

By the way the lens for the light would have originally been much lighter - rather like the US ones, I have never seen a 4002 where this discolouration does not happen, but never in the later, green 4014.

Excluding the carpet/rug nozzle, Hoover UK retained the broadly the same design of tools from the 638 Senior and 822 Connie in 1956 (and actually the floor nozzle can be traced back to 1953 to the 417) right through to the mid 1980s where some variety began to appear, and in some cases well beyond that. The exception is the upholstery nozzle (with the row of plastic red teeth) which was introduced with the 862 Connie.

We will have to see if we can short you out with a flip over nozzle although, in my opinion, the earlier carpet nozzle (as shown below) is superior.

If you have a look at Sam's Turbopower junior threads you will get a good look at what the turbo power brush roll looks like

With ours,

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
the "D" and "E" are different, s they don't have the logo in the front like that. I DO like that carpet nozzle and have many, but, I'd LOVE to get one of the 'flip over" ones.Simply, because we NEVER had them here.

A lot of new experiences

durango159's profile picture
We had a lot of fun and a lot of great experiences.

I tried grilled bacon and Vanilla Malted Milkshakes for the first time. Meeting Bill was great, another great, knowledgeable personality whom hopefully will now appear at more MiniMeets. Trying Bill's Hoover Celebrity II Elite was so much fun as my parents had this vacuum when I was growing up. I never got a chance to ever run that machine with a power nozzle years ago.

I have just started a new position, which I am very excited for. Despite my hobby/ knowledge/ passion towards vacuums, I never saw myself selling a cleaning appliance. However, my years of providing household services as a way to help families with chores around the house and also restaurant management have proved as very fulfilling positions to me. I have always been one to seek in helping others. Working in restaurants, I knew I was helping to ensure that our guests were provided with a high quality, dining experience with the best customer experience. The result is providing tired, stressed out, starving individuals, with a wonderful dining experience and hopefully a few drinks, they leave as full bellied, glowing individuals that feel more relaxed and are in awe from the delicious food and fact they didn't have to do any cooking or cleaning up themselves. Providing household services is quite fulfilling to transform a dirty house, overgrown lawn, and other needs into a clean, presentable, healthy groomed environment ready to entertain or just relax in.

Working for a high quality brand like FilterQueen we know we are providing a durable, well built, USA manufactured unit that maintains strong air flow and uses advanced filtration technology to return the cleanest possible air back into the room. As recommended in training, I am running the Defender air cleaner in my bedroom tonight before going to bed. The unit has been running for a little over an hour and the room just feels amazing. Crisp, clean, lighter, almost fluffier feeling air that's been scrubbed of pollutants and toxins that are brought in on a daily basis from variety of sources from car emissions, dust, pet dander, cooking odors, cleaning chemicals, viruses, molds, bacteria and I can keep on going. Tomorrow night I am looking to run the Filter Queen Majestic in my bedroom to see how much deep down dirt we remove with that. I have a different unit now than what I brought to Johns, and after thoroughly cleaning the unit I ran at Johns, I found dirt on the secondary motor filter-- most likely due to the high plaster laden dust and other construction dirt found on the hallway rug that John was actually thinking of replacing as he knew it was going to be in awful condition.

The Majestic and Defender are both great units. Users will benefit from the healthy 99.98% filtration that blows HEPA filter equipped units into far substandard category. The Defender offers a life time warranty with brushless motor and top speed utilizes less than 1 Amp of electricity, thereby costing just pennies a day to run. The current Majestic has far greater Air Flow than the red Majestic Triple Crown model that I had tried years ago. The new powerhead utilizes a geared belt with motor protection system that is much more powerful and consistent in power compared to its predecessor.

It was great to see everyone again. Good luck and stay healthy to all!

Glad to hear that you're doing well with Filter Queen and that you had such fun at our get-together.  I'm really looking forward to our next gathering ... whenever it may be.  I'm writing this from Knoxville, TN, BTW ... enjoying the other part of my vacation now!  (Not to be a braggart or anything, of course.)

Anyway, best of luck to you ... and hope to see you and Matt and John again real soon.

Our "Zippy" will do just fine. I told him all he needs is the right audience and he'll sell a lot. He KNEW, of course, that that audience was NOT in the House of HOOVER. We're still good friends any way and always will be. Funny how we took that "Zippy" and turned it into something nice. It didn't begin as something favorable. It's always great to take something unpleasant and turn it around. I told "Bob, the builder" numerous times here at the house, 'We must take something awful here and make it beautiful". And, he DID! Rob was never awful, just to be clear. But, you have seen his face light up while runnung HOOVERS, especially the "power nozzles". THey truly ARE his "thing".

...........  Such a nice boy.

He will do well with the vast knowledge he has about vacs in general and power nozzle vacs specifically.

CONGRATULATIONS, ROB!

Now to get ready for the convention...........

What to pack, what to pack?

Not taking a vac because of travel by train.

How formal?  How casual?

I should give John a call.........    He'll know.

Thank you all for the "Best of luck wishes!" While I never saw myself years ago as an appliance salesman, I certainly do have a passion and interest for this category. It's almost a wonder of why I haven't been nicknamed "Power nozzle" with how much of an extravagant liking for power nozzle equipped canister cleaners I have. Another reason why FilterQueen is a good fit TREMENDOUSLY more so over a brand like Kirby.

Currently with only a little over a week of actual sales times with the company I have had 5 would be sales presentations. 3 of them were completed successfully. The other two want to be owners did not have good credit.

I really like the company so far. Being based out of Ohio, our machines are built to a very high standard for lasting durability while helping to sustain and build the American economy. The Defender Air Cleaner and Majestic High Filtration Multi-Purpose Home Cleaning System are both classified under Classic II Medical filtration far surpassing HEPA filtration standards.

I have not taken apart the power nozzle but it seems solidly built with consistent power. After using the unit on a rug to get it thoroughly clean, you can actually feel a difference of softer texture. Additionally you can smell the difference compared to areas that have not been FilterQueened yet. I can not say enough about the Defender Air Cleaner system. On the nights that I have run it in my room, my sleep has been absolutely wonderful. The air really feels crisp, clean, lighter, and even "fluffier" if you imagine. It really does scrub and scour the incoming area to return out void of dust, pollen, dander, smoke, odors, molds, bacteria, viruses and other foreign, awful pollutants that hinder our health, breathing ability, sleep, and congestive feelings in the morning. Additionally the pollutants in the air are terrible for animals, your home and electronics. Dust and pollutants are a major reason many electronic devices overheat, consume more energy and die.

Again thank you all for the great wishes!!
