Hello to you all! I have been trying for the longest time to get an answer to this question, and I have yet to get it. The question is this: which Hoover factory produced the Turbopower models U2194 and U2332? Were they made at Perivale or Cambuslang? If anyone knows the answer, please let me know. Thanks!

I can assure that production continued for many years after 1946 - 1981 I think. Pre war plans for the Perivale facility indicate that considerable expansion was planned, primarily for washing machine production. WW2 changed all that and everything was delayed until 1945.
It is my belief that the government offered Hoover substantial grants and incentives not to expand the Perivale facility (although they were to go on to occupy several other buildings in the general vicinity) but to build a motor plant and canister production in Cambuslang and the washing machine plant in Merthyr to provide employment for returning soldiers - I cannot for the life of me see why else they would have gone to those particular locations. By 1958 Hoover in UK had facilities at Perivale - central office & vacuum cleaner Wembley - Constellation production Park Royal - bags (these last two are close to Perivale) High Wycombe - Irons Merthyr - Washing machines Aberdare - Wringers for washing machine Cambuslang - Motors and "Cylinder" cleaner I believe production finished in Perivale in 1981 or possibly 1982, although Hoover retained an office these for several more years. Although very much a flagship when designed and built, by the 1970s it was viewed as something of a white elephant, and indeed just this week a work colleague recalled attending a training course there in the 1970s - his description of the facility was not complimentary. The building was only rescued from demolition by a matter of days and, although the rear is a supermarket, this does not impinge too much on the front view of the building. Al |

It's been quite a while since I last had an Elite in my collection so I don't remember very well what they sound like. However, here's a video from my YouTube channel so you can hear what my two-speed Turbopower I model U2332 sounds like. CLICK HERE TO GO TO tazcatsdad's LINK |

In terms of carpet cleaning performance I would say that they're equals. The Turbopower's activator seems to be of the same design as the agitator on the Elite: even the height adjustment system appears to be similar. I've never used the attachments on the Elite so I can't speak to how good the suction is on them. The Turbopower is mediocre, attachment-wise. I seem to do better with the attachments on either one of my two Electrolux UK Contours (Z1430 or Z1501), my Electrolux UK Airstream 2 Z1530, my Electrolux UK PowerSystem Z1720, or my Electrolux UK 612 Electronic. |
