I was at an estate sale over the weekend where I found an early convertible tool kit. Sadly the cleaner was nowhere to be found (there was a Shark on the main floor) but I wanted to try it with my model 36. I discovered a tear in the underside of the ultraflex hose. I really don't want to use tape to fix it as it isn't permanent and leaves an awful residue sometimes. Can anybody suggest what the best way to repair it would be? I was thinking maybe some kind of epoxy. Thanks.

Repairing a tear in a vinyl hose

Hershel,
Depending on the size of the tear, there are a couple of things you might try. I've had good luck with Plumbers Goop, available @ Home Depot. It's a clear glue that maintains a bit flexibility once it cures. If you can reach the torn area easily from inside the hose via the end of the tube, hold the hose so the break is closed. Then you can apply a layer of the stuff to the inside using something like a wooden stirrer from Starbucks. Put an ample amount, so that it has itself and the surrounding area to hold on to. Once it cures, it's a pretty tight remedy.

I have also tried liquid latex, which pours more fluidly. It takes longer to cure, and I found it was hard to get a thick enough layer. But it worked for me on the inside of a Fairfax hose a couple of years ago. Finally, though, it let go, and I re-repaired the tear using Goop. It's been holding for about a year and a half now.

Good luck!
