Is there a simple solution to sealing an old Electrolux braided hose? I have 2: one has practically no suction loss but is not an electric hose and is a little stiff. The other is an electric hose from an early 1205 (pigtail on machine end and quick-connect at handle) that I would like to use but it leaks considerably.

Is there something like the Fix-A-Flat for car tires that could be sprayed inside the hose to seal it up?

Check the archives, i recall there is a liquid plastic sealing product of some kind mentioned that you slosh around in the hose & dump out the excess. I think there is also a clear heat shrink product to achieve the same thing, that being a durable air tight seal.

WAIT!!

 I used Glad Press and Seal and it saved my Airway hose!!

PlastiDip (which has been mentioned in previous posts) works; but I haven't used it yet to fix leaky braided hoses.  For now, I use coiled vinyl hoses because they are more flexible & less likely to leak.

 

It takes some practice to do the job right; if it's done incorrectly, the braided hose may get ruined.

Thanks for the replies. My initial searches didn't come up with any results.

Fix-A-Flat is a No Go as it is toxic (thanks for pointing that out, Ben [massagemiracle]), for anyone thinking about it from my first post.

@Erik:
I am using a vinyl hose but I don't like the gargantuan-sized grip and connectors (a result of generic hoses that are factory adapted to whatever vac they're meant for). Basically I'm looking for a weekend project as something to do now that the weather is warming up. I have a good braided hose that I'm not going to mess with and a bad one that I'd like to experiment with.

I've lloked at the links and found Dave's (aeoliandave) detailed post on using latex and that seems to be the best method to do the job. It seems simple enough so I might give it a try.


Eventually I might try my hand at a Franken-hose: I'd like to have a braided hose with a pigtail at the machine end and a curved metal nozzle with a socket; I know that Electrolux experimented with the 1205 model's hoses and had one with a pigtail machine end and quick connect on a pistol grip, and then later had one with a quick connect at the machine and a socket at the curved metal nozzle. The goal here is to connect my early PN1 (single piece wand) to my G using a braided electric hose.

And Erik, there are 10 foot braided hoses (read you were wondering about them in your first link) that came with Electrolux commercial models. Read about them in the following link if you haven't done so already:

Hey Alex!

I took my Airway hose and the Glad Press and Seal one night and just wrapped it. I took small sections of the wrap and wrapped one small section of the hose at a time as not to waste any of the wrap. I didn't wrap it length wise with the hose. Then I would overlap it to provide a good seal. I don't use my Airway that much so it has held up well and that was back in the Fall that I put it on. Also I turned the Airway on as I wrapped the hose to see if I could tel la difference. I hadn't even gotten half way through the hose and I already noticed a remarkable difference! When I finished I was amazed it the results. I did take clear masking take and taped it on the ends of the hose to keep it from coming loose. And that's all I did. My Airway is in storage at the moment so I unfortunately cannot provide a picture, but I did make a video of it soon after I saved the hose and I will be happy to provide a link for you.

Nice Air-Way. Actually I have that model. I got it from one of our original 6 members, a Mr. Craig Long of Buffelo, New York. See picture below. Craig attenedd our second club meeting in May of 1986 and located in Naperville, Illinois. When he flew to Chicago, he actually had that Air-way on the floor with him. These were the days before aitline checking, and what not. My favorite Air-Way's date back to the 1920's. I'll post those later, but here's Craig.
