Hey, I just found out at a vacuum store that Eureka makes the current Aerus vacuum cleaners and has done so for the past 5 or 6 years. Thought I'd pass on the info. in case you didn't know.

That's not quite right...

In 1968 (?) Electrolux USA was aquired by Consolodated foods. Electrolux Sweeden (Europe?) continued to exist overseas. Sometime later Electrolux (Sweeden) aquired Eureka and continued marketing that brand in the USA.

I think there were a few parent company changes between 1968 and the mid 2000's (the USA Electrolux under Consolodated foods), and I'm sure someone here will clarify what I'm saying.

Just reciently Electrolux (Sweeden) bought the name back and the company that WAS making Electrolux vacs since 1968 is now called Aerus.

AB Electrolux was the parent company from Sweeden. Vacuums were shipped here from Sweeden. In the early 1930's the United States division decided to create a separate company with their own factory in Connecticut. They created Electrolux USA.

AB Electrolux went on to produce other appliances besides vacuum cleaners and became a genaral appliance company in Europe and elsewhere.

Electrolux USA only made Vacuum Cleaners and Floor Polishers. In time, Electrolux USA was bought by Consolodated Foods.

In the late 1990's AB Electrolux of Sweeden began buying up appliance companies around the world. They purchased Eureka here in the United States. Then they wanted to market their vacuum cleaners under the Electrolux name. So they purchased the name back from Electrolux USA.

Electrolux USA became Aerus or Aerus Lux. They continue to make their products (vacuum cleaners, floor polishers and air purifiers) here in the United States. Most of their vacuums retain the same style (tank) and similar quality as they always have been. They just have a different name. They also make the similar triple brush floor polisher/shampooer. Back in the late 70's while they were still Electrolux USA they added uprights and they remain as well as part of the lineup.

The Electrolux name for vacuum cleaners is now on cleaners you might buy in large discount houses etc. etc. They are not the machines made by the long standing Electrolux USA company that we remember so well.

It is all very confusing for many people. I sold for Electrolux USA during my college years in the early 1970's. I think it was a big mistake for them to have given up the name because it was such an institution in this country. Everyone knew Electrolux and quality of vacuumes associated with this name. Which is of course why AB Electrolux wanted to buy the name back.

Sorry that it's take me so long to respond.  Thanks much for your detailed information and the links. 

 

I wonder if the Electrolux salespeople know the company's history as well as you two, because one of them recently lamented that those purchasing Electrolux vacuum cleaners are really purchasing Eurekas (when really the opposite is true--that those purchasing Eurekas are really purchasing Electroluxes).  Come to think of it, she must work for Aerus. Anyway, I would take for granted that AB Electrolux has continued with its high standards all these years; or is the Electrolux quality only a thing of the past?

AB Electrolux bought the name "electrolux" from Joe Urso in 2003. Joe leveraged a purchase of both Tri-Star and Electrolux USA and so had controlling interest in both companies. He promptly sold the name "electrolux" so AB Electrolux could begin selling Large Appliances, under the "electrolux" name, in the USA. The amount charged for the name was Fifty Milliion dollars. Electrolux USA became Aerus. As part of the "lux group", Aerus has always had the opportunity to have the European "Lux" and "Royal Lux" machines in the USA but did not do so until recently. Aerus and Tri-Star are still part of the same company - that's why you see so many shared components between the two brands (motors, hoses, wands, etc.).

Very interesting!  Thanks for sharing your info.  So would you say the Electrolux appliances are still high quality?  How about Aerus?

White Westinghouse is also part of AB Electrolux - I do not know if they are the U.S. manufacturer of Electrolux branded large appliances or not. I own the Platinum Edition, the current top of the line Aerus vacuum. It's used in my home and I find no problem with any of it. Love the Sidekick - as the owner of a new puppy it's a "must have".

'preciate the info.  I'm not at all familiar with Aerus's current models, so I'm glad to hear that yours--at least--is running well for you.  Even though technology and manufacturing methods have changed over the years, it would be a shame if the current generation of sweepers didn't have any well-built models.  I hear mainly about the poor quality of today's machines but not much at all about the good ones in the bunch.  I'm not one of those who likes to categorize everything old as great and everything new as terrible.  I'm sure all generations have had their drawbacks and successes--as your experience proves.

 

As for your puppy give him a treat for me!

I have the new platinum and have a German Shepherd who is a constant shedder. Love the machine, no complaints at all but I will admitt I am an electolux( Aerus Electrolux ) lover of all their products ..

Eureka, AB Electrolux, Frigidaire

 The Eureka- Williams company was sold to AB Electrolux in '74 and they dropped Williams from the name. White Consolidated Industries (White Sewing Machine Co) bought the Frigidaire appliance division name from General Motors in 1979. In 1986 AB Electrolux bought WCI. After AB bought the Electrolux name from USA they began selling major appliances in the US with the Electrolux name. Basically all of the major appliances with the Electrolux name are rebranded Frigidaire products.

Interesting facts--thanks for posting.  I have always understood Frigidaire to be a good quality appliance, so that would be a nice fit for the Electrolux name.
