I have been asked to cast an eye over a vacuum cleaner which the domestic staff use here to clean the communal corridors and restaurant. They have two and they are a Sebo x4 and are under one year old. I never had occasion to repair such a cleaner when I had my shop, I suppose because they were reliable and not that popular. The problem with this machine is that the main body has split on the rear, at the point where the on-board tube fits into the cleaner.

Looking at the design, I can see how it has happened; it seems that as the body is locked onto the base unit only at the front, thus there is very little to hold the rear in place. Because of this, all the pushing and shoving of the cleaner has caused the body to edge further & further forward, resulting first in the distortion of the box and in the finish a full split. Looking at both cleaners, one has a large white fold in the plastic where is shows signs of distortion, the other has split right through.

Doubtless Sebo will issue a new part, but I cannot see what will stop it happening again. Is this a common problem?

Hi Benny,

It's not something I've ever seen happen before. The top half of the cleaner actually clips into the cleaner head at the sides, not at the front. It's not uncommon to see Sebo's still in daily use that are 20+ years old. The first Sebo I ever saw was a white x1 in about 1997, which is still in immaculate condition and in still in daily use with it's original owners. These 2 particular cleaners must have seen some serious abuse to get into that state.

Hello there

Yes they clip at the side, but the metal bar runs to the front & across and is spring-loaded. There is a certain 'give' and this allows the cleaner to be pushed forward, in much the same way that the Electrolux 612 was. These cleaners are black in colour, and the main body plastic is very soft. I know only too well that certain colours of plastics can be more problematic than others. The cleaners have been well used, several times a day, but not mistreated, just used a lot.

must be the X4 pet if it's black, I've not had any experience with those unfortunately.

That's the one, the Pet model. The warden bought them online and said they worked out cheaper than all the others as they had extra long hoses included.

Not sure how they got that, Benny, the only difference between the standard X4 and the X4 pet is the inclusion of the mini turbo brush - both cleaners come with the extension hose

Hello again. That was what the warden told me, she uses a website called Freenet to buy a lot of appliances and that was where she got these. They already have a white Sebo but I don't know the model. It's a good deal older than these black x4 models. I see now that various x4 models have the hose, but the Pet model still has a good deal more with it, such as the charcoal filtration and as you say the turbo head.
