Hi filterboy244.

caligula's profile picture
I'm glad to see you here, there will be people to answer a myriad of questions. What I can tell you is that Filter Queen is a division of Health-Mor, and the coprorate offices used to be in Chicago, Illinois, probably still are, I think there on Wabash avenue in downtown Chicago. Originally it was an upright called Health-Mor, then in the 1930's became the canister Filter Queen. There is no bag, but rather a cone filter, accessed by releacing two clamps. Once you get it, you'll see how easy it is.

Will be glad to help you. Ive owned and used a FQ for many many yrs, and first used one in the early 1970s, so have losts of yrs of experience with them!
The Filter Queen is reguarded by many Vac Experts as one of the very best machines you can own.
Not only are they one of the best filtering vacuum cleaners, but also one of the highest rated in suction strength and longevity.
Its very common for a Filter Queen to last at least 30- 40 years or longer and thats with heavy use.
A friend that owns and operates a Vacuum sales and service center told me once that in the 40 plus yrs he has been servicing vacuum cleaners, he has NEVER EVER found ONE SPECK of dust in ANY Filter Queen motor where the owner has always used the Genuine Filter Queen Filter Cones.
They are made from a special cell-u-lose filter paper, especially engineered by Health Mor. The charcoal filter and the inner motor disc filter are excellent too, and should always be used, but whats more important is that Genuine Filter Cone.
So, number 1 rule in owning a Filter Queen is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use NOTHING BUT GENUINE FILTER CONES!,,, And your machine will last a lifetime.
Welcome to the Filter Queen family!

As far as when to change which filters.

NEVER re-use the Filter Cone or try to tap the dust off and re-use.
ALWAYS put a new, fresh cone in place, each time you dump the bin.
You will be supprised at how fast and how full that bin will get. This is because the Filter Queen does NOT let ANY dust escape, not ONE SPECK,,as long as the GENUINE HEALTH MOR FILTER CONE is in place.

As for the charcoal Medipure Filter,,you will know when its time to change it. Depends on how much you use the Filter Queen. If you are using the FQ daily, and heavily, i would change the Medipure every 6 -8 months.
As for the inner, motor disc filter,(that is underneath and next to the motor), same as for the Medipure,,depends on how much you are using the machine, and WHAT you are picking up.
IF you are continually vacuuming up very fine, powdery type dust,,,change the filters more often or at least inspect them.

As for the motor baffle filter,(that is visable around the motor top) very rarely does this filter have to be changed.
Again, depends on how often, and what you are picking up. Generally every 5 yrs or so is all that is necessary to change this filter. Of course if it looks or smells dirty, change it.

As for the exhaust cap filter,,there again, at your discretion. Inspect it periodically. It should be the cleanest filter of them all, and should very rarly need changing, except at times of general overhaul, or if you have used some sort of scent oil on it,,and wish to change to a different scent, or just install a new clean filter.

The exhaust of the Filter Queen should always smell VERY VERY clean. Infact, with the Medipure filter in place, the Filter Queen is classified as a certified medical air cleaning device.

Generally tho,,the main thing you have to change the most often, and MUST REMEMBER, is that FILTER CONE,,and use nothing but GENUINE HEALTH MOR Filter Queen CONES! ,,and your good to go!

A couple other points while im thinking of it. IF you didnt already know this.

About dumping the bin (bucket).

DONT just turn it over into the trash can. It will cause a terrible dust storm.

After removing the hose, and PN cord, and unclamping and taking the motor off,(set the motor aside) and removing the bin from the dolly, take the Medipure filter off, leaving the Genuine Filter Cone in place.

Hold a sheet of newspaper TIGHTLY over the top of the bin, and over the cone.
Turn it upside down, tap the bottom of the bin a few times, hold for a few seconds, step back, release the newspaper, and let it all fall out of the bin, into the trash.

Next,i like to spray the inside of the bin with Windex,409,whatever, (or your favorite all purpose spray cleaner) and wipe the entire inside and outside of the bin thoroughly, with a paper towel and let dry. Go over the inside of the bin several times, and make sure its 100% DRY before re-clamping the NEW GENUINE FILTER CONE, the Medipure,(if your using one) and the motor.

Some people like to wash out the bin (bucket) with soap and warm water, and rinse it out,,,thats fine too. However make sure to wipe COMPLETLY dry, so as to avoid any rust.
You DONT need to fill the bin completly with water to do this,,just a little is fine. Just make sure the bin is 100% DRY before re-clamping.

NEVER EVER pick up water or ANY liquids with the Filter Queen, or let water or liquid sit in the bin, Of Course.

Pay attention to the the area around the inside of the air intake inside the bin. Loose hair, string, threads and stringy dust will want to accumulate there. Remove this, as it can hamper the tornadic action of the Filer Queen's air flow path, if a build up gets to be too thick in this area, as THIS is the area that causes the tornado.

You want that tornado to be as free and easy as it can get! The easier that tornado inside that bin turns, the better and stronger the air flow! SO, periodically inspect the amount of dirt and dust in your bin. IF its getting full,,,DUMP and WIPE clean!

Filter Queen

Fortunately Filter Queens are (in my opinion anyways) easy machines to work on. Once you get it and can look at, you'll see that it is a straightforward design. It is quite easy to take the whole thing to pieces should you ever need to. When I got my Filter Queen, Health Mor sold me what they called a maintenance kit. It contained 12 filter cones, 2 medi-purs, 2 pre motor filters, a felt pad for the scent cap, a new brush roll, belt, gasket for the bottom plate of the power nozzle, a light bulb, and a bottle of fragrance. It cost $99. It also had detailed instructions on what to do. I would recommend paying the money for the kit as you get a lot with it. If you do order it, make sure to have the model and serial number from your machine when you call. When they created my account, they linked the exact machine I had to it.

Generally a motor filter disc is included in every pack of filter cones-you change the motor filter under the cone guard after using a pack of cones.Again,as others say-use the REAL FQ cones and NOT bojack ones. The exhaust filter inside the powerdome is replaced when the machine is refurbished-or odors still present after you have dumpted, cleaned the bin and replaced the cone and disc filters.I like the OLDER METAL FQ vacuums-not the newer plastic ones. The plastic ones seem flimsy to me.And FQ vacuums are usually used by vac shops as bench vacuums-----and one tech I know DID pick up samll amounts of liquid cleaner after cleaning a vacuum with the cleaner-he does that only when the machine is somewhat full.I DON'T do this. The vac shops empty their FQ machines daily or even several times daily.

I have a model K31X & love it. Sometimes I use it for vacing cloth bags & vacuum parts; & still have excellent suction. Even the K88 PN deep cleans shag carpets very good.

I knew I could count on you to provide information on some of the brands I have limited information about. I own a Health-Mor upright circa 1930, and a Filter Queen model 200 and love both of them. However, when it comes to the more modern, and up to date machines, I'm a fish out of water. When you provide info to the members, you're teaching me as well.

Thanks again,

You'll get your Filter Queen, I'll get my Kirby Classic 111, looks like a great week for both of us. By the way, I plan to go to Indiana the last week of April, and will start restoring my machines. Once I get everything here, I'll post pictures of the Health-Mor before the restoration.

Enjoy your Filter Queen, and yes, I do want to see pictures.

AMEN on genuine Health Mor cones!

They really are the best! I also am sold on the FQ, Mike Rogers got me hooked on them years ago.I wish they still made the cotton batting silencer ring , the foam versions just are not as good.

I have a question for everyone regarding the Medi-Pure cones. My question is.. What exactly are they? I've worked at a vac shop for almost a year now, and I haven't heard of these cones before. Are they like a cloth cone that goes in behind the paper one to add better filtration? If so I may just order one. I built a Filter Queen out of about 5 at work a few months ago, and I really like it. It is a model 700, with the original single speed motor, but different dust bin. I liked the pattern from the newer brown style machine, so I put it on my machine. I can always get a wood grain one from work if I have to. Anyways, will this "Medi-Pure" cone work with my FQ? If someone could 'educate me' on this I would really appreciate it. Now I'm on the hunt for a cheap used pn, and a used electric hose. I had a cracked open electric hose so I put the ends on it and use it just as a standard hose now because I find it more flexible. If anyone has a used chrome pn, or electric hose, let me know.

Thanks guys!
Daniel :-)

The MediPure cones are black on the outside & white on the inside.  It's just like the EnviroPure (black on both sides) cones; but the MediPure has the white ULPA-type? filter that filters better than HEPA filter.

Where can I find the "mini wand" adaptor to use generic 11/4" tools?  I need one to use the Wessel Werk HEB160 with the Filter Queen K31X for vacing car interiors.

This is the adaptor I'm refering to (attached to the Air Glider)

Here's a pic of the MediPure filter

The EnviroPure filter

The white PRIMARY pre-filter, which MUST be used with your Filter Queen.  ALWAYS USE THE GENUINE FQ CONES; DO NOT USE GENERIC CONES!

The new style gasket is recommended if you're going to use either the EnviroPure or MediPure filters (U still MUST use the GENUINE white primary filter cones, which goes inside the container & EnviroPure or MediPure INSIDE the primary filter cone)

These filters should fit all models; as long as it has a round dirt container.

Medi-pur

The Medi-pur sits inside the primary cone just like this. Mine is a D31X as well, so you should be set!

Daniel, I really like the pattern of the dust bin on your machine! Do you know what model it originally came from?

Over time.....

pr-21's profile picture

When Filter Queen has changed the filters in the past, in order to use them instead of the ones designed for your Filter Queen, they would have you change the rubber gasket around the dirt bucket, which would help keep a tight seal with the newly designed filters.

Hey Cameron, let me check tomorrow at work and see if I can come up with a model number that would've had that dustbin. I just have to look at all the model plates upstairs, there's about 10 more. Most are 700's, but I think I know which one had my bin on it, and ill post that tomorrow. As for the medi-pure, any idea on cost for just that filter? I'm thinking of getting one for my machine. So I would have to change my dirt bucket gasket ?

Thanks for everyone's help! I appreciate it! I also have to agree that they are one of the easiest machines to work on.

Daniel :-)

I absolutely love my Princess 3 FQ, it has better suction than any of my other vacs! And definitely use the genuine filters on the FQ as I think it really does matter.

As for the foam ring filter in the top of the machine, I need to get a new one as mine disintegrated and needs to be replaced, but this is an easy fix.

I got a beautiful FQ Majestic off Ebay a few years back. Its one powerful machine & very quiet.

As for filters etc. I find great prices for the cones, charcoal filters & upper filter ring's on eBay. In so far as changing filters etc. Go onto Youtube, type in Filterqueen and you'll find several videos on how to, when to & what to do when it comes to your Filterqueen.

Enjoy your new FQ find.

I Love all of mine!

The only thing I don't like about the Filter Queen is the hose gets tangled around the attachments on top of the machine when you are vacuuming with the power nozzle. And I would love to find the old batting type of ring filter on the top of the machine. The only kind of ring filters I can find are made out of some kind of Sponge. The Queens don't run very quite with this type of filter installed... And FilterBoy244 on my days off this week I will get down in the basement and get all of the model numbers for you of all of my Filter Queens.... Dan

Hello - newbie here! My vacuum is a Filter Queen too. My mother purchased it when I was not quite one year old. I got custody of it when she passed away. That makes it a little over sixty years old! I've done a little work on it, but they were made to be repaired - it just keeps chugging away. Long as I can get replacement parts, I'll leave it to my kids when I go:-)
I took some pix. It -does- look a little beat up, works fine.

That looks to me like a model 500, but it's in pretty sad condition. With the dents, the missing paint and the rust, this poor vacuum desperately needs an intervention.

Model 450. I had to replace the motor about ten years ago. It seems to run awfully hot - nice way to warm up a cold room in the winter:-) Yes DJ, it's pretty beat up, still, in better shape than the other 60 year old in the family - and all its parts work properly!

I have a Model 700 Filter Queen ("FQ") with a new motor that was put in about two to three years back. I bought this FQ model in 1976. I had it tuned up yesterday for about $70/-. When is the next tune up due and how often it should be done? The technician told me that the next tune up may be in three years.

By the way the technician told me that it has a 2-stage motor that is better than the newer ones that come in a single stage motor. Is he correct?

Thanks for any replies.

I have always heard of filter queen quality, but I've never had the desire to spend money on one. I was recently given a model 95x and 33. The suction was excellent as expected, but I had no idea they were whisper quiet with monster suction! The 33 seems to be more powerful and quieter, but the 95 has a pn port, so that will probably get more use when I put them to use.

When is the next tune up due and how often it should be done

My parents Filter Queen model 31 was purchased in 1975 and it's never had an official tune up. Perhaps someone here that either works in or owns a vacuum cleaner shop can explain what a Filter Queen tune up would involve, but beyond changing the paper filter cone and the secondary filter I can't think of what else one would need to do.

I'm sorry to here about the motor replacement. Filter Queens are so good at cleaning the air that blows through the motor that that sort of thing usually isn't neccesary. Can you tell us what yours was doing that led to its replacement?

As for the two stage motor, I'm not sure what the service tech meant by that. In the photo below you can see the motor I took out of my sisters model 33 for a dual bearing change. The previous owner had been running it with cheap aftermarket filter cones and no secondary filter at all, so dirt damaged the lower bearing and the upper bearing was changed for good measure. But in the photo below where the metal fan cover has been removed you can see the rotating fan that creates the vacuum indicated by the blue arrow. It's essentially a centrifugal compressor that throws the air outward. The air then travels over and around the edge of the stationary metal disc indicated by one of the red arrows, where the stationary guide vanes indicated by the other red arrow then direct the air back to the center. From there it flows up through the motor where the large volume of air flowing past keeps the motor cool.

This is the typical setup for all the Filter Queens I've encountered, but I have to admit that I've never dealt with any of the newer models. So if there has been a change of some sort I'd love to hear from anyone that can explain what the change entailed.

Listen to the experts! NEVER use anything but genuine Filter Queen filter cones in your machine! I tried using cheap cones in my FQ once. BAD IDEA!!! In short, I should have been publicly flogged and stripped of my FQ ownership rights for such an ugly decision.

Hey guys, just registered because my mom wanted me to find attachments for her original FQ 700. I ended up finding a great deal on the local classifieds for a FQ 700 with most of the attachment (minus PN, which I just ordered on ebay for $65 (B-88 model)) Anyways, I was wondering if I should buy the maintenance kit and do it myself or leave it to the professionals for $49.99 at my local FQ service center? Also, does anyone have the original manual for the FQ 700? Any help would be appreciated.

Hose for Model 200 Filter Queen?

Help, all you Filter Queen experts! Will the usual sort of non-electric FQ hose that's available these days fit on a Model 200 Filter Queen? I'd love to have a Model 200 for my collection, but any of the ones being offered recently have needed ALL accessories, including the hose and wands! Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thanks, BrianKirbyClass! I can't imagine the design has changed terribly much over the years. The pictures of that awesome chrome 200A from a few years ago show that it had a new hose, so the 200 shouldn't be all that different. Here's hoping!

I seem to recall that the model 200 had two locking lugs on the tanks hose fitting placed directly opposite each other for the hose to lock on to, whereas the later machines all had three lugs spaced 120 degrees apart. If that's correct then the modern replacement hoses won't fit without modification, but perhaps someone else can answer with more certainty.

The model 200 hose is unique. Any other model Filter Queen hose WON'T fit. However, a Royal hose WILL FIT. The model 200 (made by Royal for Filter Queen) has only two locking tabs, all other models had three. Royal tank cleaners use the same two locking tabs.

Thanks, dysonman! Appreciate the information!

Dysonman1, you wouldn't happen to have a model number for that Royal hose, would you? I'd appreciate it!
