This would probably be...

the most exciting vacuum i could come acroos in a thrift store, garage sale or trash pick setting. There are more desireable vacs to me out there, but i have yet to even see one of these DAMs.

I have always been fascinated with the Dial-A-Matic. Had one given to me by a friend of my moms when I was about 3 yrs old. Took it apart and of course at that age could not get it back together LOL I now have 4 of them. 2 trash finds, one .50 cents at a garage sale and another free from a garage sale.

My lucky day...

stricklybojack's profile picture
This DAM followed me home from the thrift store. Earlier in the day i sold one of 2 Dysons i bought at an auction last month..phew! Always steered clear of the debate around those machines but after my brief ownership i realized i would much rather have the money they sell for than the fragile machine itself. This Dial has the crack near the handle which i guess is common. But dang, i just posted how i never run into these & whamo i'm a proud new owner.

Model 1110

You're a lucky man indeed! I love the peacock blue color. The 1110 was the second model DAM produced (1964-66), first with a check bag indicator!

We're the same vintage then...

Just ordered 6 Type D bags from It's free shipping with code MAR13FS & 15% of with code RMN15. I did want to find an allergen bag alternative but no dice as far as i could tell.
The brush roll looks absolutely perfect & unused, so i'm good to go there, but the cord is a replacement with an added plug & broken strain relief... i may replace it with a Kirby cord i have off a parts machine.
The Hoover emblem on the base is also suffering some, well a lot of wear & i will need to find one of those to get this Dial looking it's best.

@stricklybojack, did that cord come off a commercial hoover? I'd like to see a picture at the switch where the cord attaches at the handle.

You're seeing an orange extension cord...

stricklybojack's profile picture
that is oddly looing like the cord for the Dial given it's coincidential placement, but it is not wired to the machine at all. The cord on the vacuum is just visable below the belt around the handle, sort of gray-brown in color & i strongly doubt a Hoover commercial cord as it not very heavy in gauge.

More hair...

jamming up the fill tube. My guess is some one found this in a Vac shop dumpster & took it to the Pawn shop for cigarette money.
The motor bearing sound awful dry on wind-down, very dry climate in this part of San Diego. I wonder if i should put the sweet motor from my old white (currently unused) PortaPower in this Dial? The agitator is like new, (the bristles are so long) so i bought without even plugging it in.
Pawn shops always want way too much for their merchandise in my experience & this place was no different, $89...nuts! I paid $15 & traded 2 small air-filtering machines i no longer use for the balance.
I think it will clean up nice, although the hood is pretty scratched up.
The bottom of machine is in excellent shape, the cord looks to be a replacement (being in such good shape) with the wrong color strain-relief (black). Don't know about the power drive yet, saving that for tomorrow. Just wanted to get this machine home where it will be taken care of rather than scrapped.

The place also had a very worn & unsorted Hoover Conquest 18" machine for $200...but i love the Conquest! May have to scrounge up some other tradable (but not really sellable) stuff & do a deal, but no cash this time.

You got a matching "Connie"? Great. I only have an additional orange/seal griege one. You'll love it. Need bags?

Yeah,  In a previous thread in this section Brandon_W_T had some machines for sale, and one of them was an all yellow Connie.  I e-mailed him, and we settled on a price, and I paid him for it.  It's on the way and I should have it today or tomorrow.  Don't know if it has any bags, but I'm sure I could use some.  It is coming with the hose, floor tool, and wands.  I figure I can share the tools from the DAM with the Constellation.  It is a model 86.  This picture is the one Brandon posted of it in his thread.

I always wondered how the DAM's without rug adjustment worked? I know the power drives were self adjusting, but it seems some of the regular ones do not have a lever in front.

The Connie Arrived

jfalberti's profile picture
Here she is with her sisters, a Dial A Matic and a Convertible. The Constellation is awesome. Really clean with no scuffs or rust. Only wear is on the bottom ring, which is common. I need to get a new filter for it as we'll as bags, then she'll be ready to rock. Thank you Brandon. It's awesome.
