Hi!
Here is my latest find, Electrolux ZF68C. 450W motor. Made in England. This BOL model was a good value for money in late 1960īs. I think after this model here came Z77 light blue version with aluminium tubes.

Best Regards
Markus

Interesting variation. I've never seen the 68. I assume that, while it was made in England, it wasnt sold there, as the 64 shown below (from my collection) was the similar machine sold in England at the time.

You always manage to get such interesting cleaners, and here is another one.

Unfortunatly I have a bit of a gap in exact knowledge about the production dates of 64 and 65 Models. It is known that the 65 launched in either late 1959 or VERY early 1960 and it is presumed that the 64 launched in mid 1960, which is the year (confirmed) that Doug's is from. The successor models 77 (64) and 80(65) both debuted in 1967. It is only my recollection but I recall noting how the handle on the 77 was different from the previous model but in line with other Lux models so I presume that the 68 was not sold here.

Another interesting detail is the motor wattage, as it was later in the production cycle that the 450 watt motor was fitted, the earliest was 400 watt motor. Below is the 77 and the heritage is clearly visible, but the 68 is very clearly the earlier style of the 64 such as logo badge on top of the machine. The hose is the older style, but the hose connector - machine end (a weak spot on the 64) is very clearly the later style seen on the 77 & 80.

Of course there was a very wide variety of Luxes sold thoughout Europe, often with just detail differences.

Markus, if you are interested I have a spare 64 which I am looking to dispose of

Al

It seems logical to me that the UK 64 should have a vertical handle (if viewed with the cleaner stood on end) as this was in keeping with the earlier cleaners, and in my opinion added to the budget look of the cleaner as it was very similar to a good deal of others on sale at the same time, such as models in the Goblin range. However, as time progressed it would also make sense of course for the cleaner to go for a horizontal handle, such as the 77 did, and to me it looks that little bit more up to date.

So why then I wonder did Electrolux revert to a vertical handle for the long duration of the model 87 and later 96? The only advantage I can see to it was that it incoprorated a very simple catch to hold the front cover in place, but then a simple buckle or clamp over the top would have done, as was seen on the Goblin 555. Even that cleaner always stuck me as more modern in style than the Electrolux 87, with it resembling an Electrolux 302 rather than the 87 which it was competing with.

Personally, I expected the 87 to have continued with the handle as it was seen on the 77.

Straight handle

The 64 was not the only Lux cleaner of that era to have a straight handle as the Trident models show. These were mainly based on the Lux 80 although with the addition of the bag full indicator and in later models a suction control and tool clip on the hose handle.

The curious thing to me was that these models ran from 1965 and showed features that took another two years to emerge in the "regular" lux line.

In fact it seems like the basic Lux lines ran for about 10 years here in each case:
48/60 1950-1960
64/77 1960-1970
87/96 1970-1980 onwards

You might be surprised to know that the front cover mounted handle first appeared on a Lux in 1957 (not UK model), if I am not mistaken Markus has one of these machines in his collection.

Here is a Trident

And a later one

In the case the handle is even more similar to the 64 model - I believe this model comes after the blue one shown above

Hello Vacbear

Thank you for sharing the pictures of the Trident. Do you think the long handle has dated the style? I certainly do.
