Now i know the answer to this question could depend on many things, but generally speaking what would a vac shop charge to do what we collectors do on this ritual occasion?
I'm more picky these days on what i'm buying, leaning towards higher end or minty (more recent) machines. Lots of later 80's Hoover self propelleds & it's siblings have been left, too much work for a good, but not thrilling (to me), machine. I look at all those parts on those 80's to early 90's Hoovers & i can't see happily putting out the effort (& risking the possible added cost of hidden issues) to do thorough job. I just cleaned the blue vinyl out bag on a Royal 880, holy smokes what that thing dirty! Turned the bucket of suds into a bucket of sludge twice...that was after i vacuumed it out! The outside had a thin layer of grime that had to be scrubbed of painstakingly...well the bag alone took an hour of hand washing to get right. Thankfully these machines are simple, & man that bag just glows now. Guess my point is i don't see anybody but a collector doing this kind of work, a shop would just toss the bag & install a new one. The picture is what came out of a Silver King i cleaned out the bin of recently. The vac lived on a ocean going cabin-cruiser...ah, yeah, rust will have to be dealt with later on in the rebuild as this age old muck was wet. The white ring is whats left of a filter. I plan to make my bench vac as i'm tired of emptying the filter bag on my Portapower to keep it up the suction level. |
