Hello, this is my first post here.

Recently I helped clean out a very old home. In the attic I discovered a Hoover vacuum. Tomorrow I should be able to post a picture before I clean the unit.

A little research is pointing me that it is a Hoover Model 28. Hopefully someone here can verify in the coming days or give their knowledge on the vacuum.

Nearly everything in this house, and I mean nearly everything is 1800's to 1950's, and its a 4 story home. We have been finding items in their original boxes/packing that have seen little use. A true pickers dream in my opinion.

If I can save everything I would; however I saved plenty, including this vacuum.
I hope pictures do the vacuum justice because besides dust there is not a blemish, rip/tear, or scratch on the unit. The wiring has no cracks or bends which is very uncommon for old things so thats a plus but may need gone through.
I am disappointed to say that someone tossed the original cloth hose and metal attachments in the dumpster during cleaning, those were perfect as well.

Sorry for the rambling...I will update this thread with pictures and if the Hoover runs I will try and get some videos on youtube of the action.

Thanks

Good news, I went back to the dumpster and did some dumpster diving. Haha.
I couldn't stand seeing the hose and ends going to the dump when they were so close.

In the hunt I found the cloth hose, a straight metal tube, a 45 degree metal tube, and about 4 or 5 metal ends, 2 with brushes. One end is a old metal Electrolux floor bar which doesn't match the group, but I figured someone could use it.

@nubz - if your interested after pictures are posted and I clean and go through the unit just let me know.

Heres a quick picture I took of the vacuum while I was working today.
, this attic had not been touched in probably 30 years.

I did tilt the unit back and found the specs on bottom, says Model 28 so that is verified.

The vacuum may not look like much from the pictures but I assure you, its just thick dust covering it.

Heres the attachments saved.

Hey guys,
Sorry the Hoover is still sitting in the barn, have not brought it home.
In a few days hopefully I should have it here and clean the unit up.
Yes one of the ends says Electrolux and another looks to be entirely different as well.
I'll let you know how everything runs and post images of progress.

---I found this picture on the forum, I have everything I believe, except the box & what looks to be the platic nozzle ends towards the bottom. I do not recall seeing the plastic ends when I went back to the dumpster.

The 28 is home and I wiped her down. I provided a link to the images of the Hoover.

Heres a breakdown of my take on the unit.

The Good
- Its all there, no missing springs/screws/parts from what I can tell
- No cracks in the body, no tears or rips in the bag.
- Overall in good mechanical and cosmetic shape.

The Bad
- I plugged it in...flipped the switch...absolutely nothing.

The ugly
- Common scuff marks on the lower body from vacuuming.
- Cord looks perfect; however, decades of being rolled up makes it want to stay in a circle shape, the internals of the cord in my opinion are shot.

Thats my take on the Model 28, where I go from here I'm not sure.
I can run a new cord to the motor. I have a few vintage plug-in 'ends' that will match the 50's/60's era appliances. No brown cords however.

Let me know what you guys would try or do next. I'm assuming the wire is bad because every bend seems to have brittled the insides and I don't hear anything (buzz, click, whine) near or around the motor making me believe no electricity is reaching it.

it may also be the switch. I have a eureka from 1933 with original cord, it looks horrible, but works fine. In my experience usually you would see some sparking or something from the cord.

Worked a little bit more on the Hoover.
I unhooked the wiring in the handle at the switch and ran a new cord...nothing.

I bypassed the switch for a brief moment and she turned over.

So nubz your right that the switch is the culprit.

The original cord inside tha handle is a bit sketchy looking but I just went ahead and hooked everything back up.
I used my shop vac to clean the inside of the bag a bit, cleaned the undercarriage a bit as well.

She's parked for now. May try and hunt down a switch or break into the switch down the road. Could just need contacts cleaned, will have to see.

*** I have received a few messages of those interested in this Hoover if I decide to let it go. I've replied mentioning I do collect certain antiques/older items but vacuums are not one. If anybody has interest in this Hoover after reading the scoop on the unit just let me know.

Update...again. Haha

My dad came home and told me the motor was just frozen, we went to the Hoover and he spun the motor until she fired up.

He told me to tear into the motor and grease the shaft and clean the brushes. I did as he said and went though everything.
The brushes need replacing down the line, well worn; but, I managed to get her going.

I replaced the bulb with a spare for my old Ford.

Took about an hour to go through the motor, replace bulb, and I used new wire for the internal so nothing is brittle.

Heres a video as promised. Glad shes a runner now.
