I thought the DC01 used an Ametek motor?
Sounds like its got something jammed in the brushroll, hence the burning smell he talks about - probably the belt slipping and burning the rubber.
Its a nice clean DC01, and so far this model has eluded me - never a decent one comes up near me, and I want a fairly good example for my early Dyson collection. The ridiculously high price of petrol makes long distance collections out of the question for me now. I've got all the uprights from DC03 to DC15, so only need the DC01. There are a couple of DC01 DeSijls on Ebay at the moment too, but again, they are too far to collect, and postage is too high. Will just have to lie in wait for a local one to come up.

Oh madabouthoovers dc01s are pretty common so you should find one. Look out for people throwing them away- I've seen loads of them!

Hi Steve,
The early DC01's used Ametek motors and later ones had YDK motors. The later ones also tend to have better suction but are louder, as the Ametek motors are older now they nearly sound about the same!

Jake my 1995 dyson dc01 has a YDK motor!!

Post# 218452 , Reply# 7   2/10/2013 at 10:29 (4,063 days old) by jakesvacs ()

Well for me its a general pattern, I do know that the late dc01s all used ydk.
Those ametek motors are much more reliable too but when their bearings go they sound just as loud as the YDK motors.

Is that why my Ametek dc01 DAS is louder than my YDK dc01?

Post# 218479 , Reply# 9   2/10/2013 at 14:30 (4,063 days old) by Parwaz786 ( )

Yep, that could be the case sometimes, my very first Ametek DC01 was so quiet, I cn have a conversation over it by even talking quietly! :P but my Destijl and other yellow dc01 standard had loud ameteks

PS, Thanks Steve, and You would like both Ametek and YDK DC01's :) the Ametek is quieter but YDK is higher pitched like a DC04 kind of and has better suction, and grooms better at a faster speed. I saw a DC01 Destijl today on eBay located in Manchester for £20

Sorry for the frequent replies, but this is the final one now, I promise :)
It is a YDK DC01.
I took it home and opened the soleplate, the problem was that here was a lot of pet hair that stopped the belt, it had a massive dust ball, maybe about 1/4 of a bin full stuck in the belt place!!! the belt didnt break im suprised, just was badly stretched out, i put a new one in and the brushbar went VROOM! it groomed so amazingly, I didnt expect that, I shall do the same, put a new belt in the destijl dc01, but this brushbar my standard one has is black with white stiff bristles. PS, I can always hear my neighbour's DC33 grooming from next door :P (live in a terraced housed area)
The Dyson DC01 is a recommended vacuum by me! its better than a DC03 I tell you!

Yeah parwaz I have to suffer with 3 DC01's...

Only joking they are a nice vacuum to have in a collection. Not very powerful or good at much though, but I personally think they will stay in my collection forever!

Yes :D exactly the same brushbar :) but different soleplate, its the one with the floating cradle bit that has a common fault of breaking :/

DC01

This model is a legend. It has a lot of features in common with the Fantom Thunder. Did you know that James Dyson invented the first Fantom vacuum?

Yes and fantom brought the patents off him. Fantom still went bankrupt in 2001 though!

I really think this and the DC02 are really neat vacuums, for what they mean in the history of vacuums. If I was in the UK, this would definitely be a vacuum I'd want for a collection. Especially the very early models.

My DC01

I recently aquired a DC01 needing a motor, managed to source a second hand, it's YDK, and have since put it up for sale (fully re-conditioned for £35) it's really good condition too, but no interest! So might decide to keep it myself. I didn't plan to have a collection as such just fix and repair, but I already kept myself a tidy 01 de stijl. Either way nice model you have aquired.

Here is a picture of mine. And a picture of a mint 04 & 07 currently for sale
