I am SO excited! My Hoover model 29 has finally arrived! Our local Craigslist doesn't usually offer many older vacuums on here so I was really surprised to find this one and even more so surprised to find that it hadn't been sold when I inquired about it! I've not had a chance to put it together yet or test it, but will when I get home tonight! For its age, it appears to be in decent condition, however if I was taking a wild guess, I don't believe the bag is original to this machine. John Long and some of the other Hoover experts can confirm or deny this. If anyone knows much on the history of these model 29's I would appreciate it as I've never had one up to this point. Thanks!

Hey Steve,
Model 29 debuted in 1950. These old girls were real workhorses. The first of this design by Henry Dreyfuss, this machine would live on in 3 or 4 more iterations (Models 62, 63, 634 [do I have that right?] and Model 64 [The Citation] before morphing into the Convertible in 1957.
You are right....that is not the original bag. The Model 29 had a shakeout (no interior paper bag) bag. Yours has probably been converted to paper bag use. Is there a tube attached to the back of the machine? The actual bag used on the Model 29 was a sort-of Burgundy color. The next model to hit the market would be the Model 62, which continued the tradition of reusable paper bags that started with the Model 61. BUT...the Model 63 (approximately 1953) debuted the throwaway Type C Hoover paper bag.
Here's an ad from one of our Vacuum of the Day pictures here on the Forum of the Model 29: |

I have 2. One was converted to a C bag. The other has a replacement shakeout bag. John Lucis: PERFECT explanation!! The great vinyl bag was from late 60s , 70s. My first intro to a 29 was when I was in school. My "job" was to vacuum part of the convent. It was a 50 room house, and had 2 29s. I knew it was a "sign". |

I appreciate all of the information on this machine, and thanks for the VOD photo, I didn't have that one in my folder of VOD's! Jeff, that is indeed an AMAZING looking machine! I certainly would love to find one of the shake-out bags for it, so I'll have to scour eBay, CL, and places like that, unless one of you all have a spare you'd part with! :) Anyway, I cannot wait to get it cleaned up and checked out from top to bottom and see what I can do about those scratches/gouges in the hood. I think its going to be an awesome machine to have in my collection, and I know John I'm slacking, I STILL don't have a model 28 for the collection, but hey those things are getting harder and harder to find these days! Don't worry though, I'm not giving up until I DO get one!
I swear if I don't stop buying and collecting all of these vacuums, my wife is going to divorce me!!!! |

Sorry for the thread drift, but what is an Aero-Dyne? Saw it on that ad and never heard of it before. Lovely machine too! The bag's not all bad, it could have a brown bojack 1970's cloth bag with VACUME CLEANER down it! |

About as original as you get. Red cord and shake out bag. The original bags are a scarce as hen's teeth. They took a beating in use. Long story about this one, but I had one back in college. Charlie W. outbid me on Ebay for this one restored it and I finally got my hands on it after using a good deal of guilt. A time machine. And a sweet machine. This one will be retained in the collection for sure. |

Thank you for the compliments. The bag on mine is a Dust Care and takes C bags. Back in the day their bags, as well as DVC, were probably as close to original as you could get in generic replacement bags.
Fred, your 29 is especially beautiful, and so is your Aerodyne! I have a model 42 Aerodyne, but not nearly as nice as yours. Here's a pic. I should take a new one, since this one was taken I have replaced the hose with a genuine Veriflex hose and replaced the rug nozzle with an original. As for the GE swiveltop to the left, I should take another pic of it too. It has since been cleaned up a bit and the hose has been repaired. Jeff |
