So my sigot woke me up at 6:30 this morning as he was leaving for work to tell me that there would be "vacuums" on Good Morning America. I set my clock, anxiously awaiting the feature. It was interesting but disappointing.

The thrust of it was that this is the "hundredth anniversary of the vacuum cleaner" which we all know isn't quite accurate - "hundreth anniversary of the electric vacuum cleaner" perhaps but even that is a bit disingenous since Spangler assembled his first contraption in 1905 or 1906 right?

Anyway, they only mentioned that "historic significance" in passing and then went right into a Good Housekeeping "review" (plug?) for several vacuums, the theme being "the best vacuum for the buck." Shown were:

-- The "Halo" which features an ultraviolet light that allegedly "kills dust mites, bacteria and other harmful stuff." I seem to recall reading or hearing somewhere that the power of the UV light in this machine is not really powerful enough to do the killing job but is just a sales gimmick. Anyone know more on this?

-- A new sleek-looking Dirt Devil stick vac with a triangular-shaped head that the nice GH lady showed how easy it is to maneuver around traffic cones! Futuristic looking thing that vaguely resembles one of those skinny space aliens.

-- "Electrolux" [IN QUOTES] - red plastic machine that's a sort of hybrid between upright and canister with a fold-down handle that the lady had a bit of a hard time with. She laughed it off saying, "If you do it often enough, it's really easy to do."

-- Roomba robot cleaner with some new features but still the same basic thing, a disk-shaped machine that slithers about on its own. Basically a Bissel with a brain.

-- And last but not least, a new and much leaner Dyson [and much less hideous-looking in a more conservative gray rather than screaming yellow]. The host of the show perked up, "Oh, a Dyson! That's supposed to be the best vacuum now, isn't it?" The GH lady said, "Well, it's a good machine but the Electrolux actually did a slightly better job of cleaning."

Sadly - and conspiciously - absent: Hoover. Perhaps that's why no mention was made of the "name that started it all."

Apparently the October issue of GH also has vacuum cleaner ratings and one assumes it will be a more comprehensive feature than the piece on GMA.

Not really worth getting up at the crack of dawn to see, but I do appreciate my buddy being thoughtful enough to alert me to it! He's getting soft in old age, haha!

Looks like the ABC blog is now contaminated with the same Dyson hype as the AOL blog.
