I need to shorten the cord on my Tri Star. In order to do that I need to remove the top of the vacuum to get access to where the cord connects to the motor. I am having a challenge removing the top from the bottom. Is there any techniques that will help me do this??

Thanks
Brad

Brad, there are only three bolts holding the halves together, no more and no less - no clips, tabs or adhesives. The halves join together dry in channels of the rubber bumper surround.

One bolt is at center front below the bag door latch and the other two reside inside the wheel wells of the rear wheels. You have to knock out the drift pin that serves as an axle to get at those bolts. Then simply pull the halves apart.

Compact and Tristar shells are cast in magnesium. It is very lightweight but also brittle. All 3 bolts must be removed before attempting to separate the halves or you run the risk of cracking the shell or bolt mount posts.

For reassembly. it is best to knock the axle pins outward from the belly and observe which end has the knurled edge - usually the inner end. Which should be the last section of the pin to be knocked home. The knurl locks the pin in the holes so it will not work loose in future.
Pin are replaced in reverse fashion, pressing and hammering them flush with a hammer and cloth bushing pad to avoid marring the paint.

The picture shows the bolt locations as yellow dots.

Are the 3 bolts out yet?

Then I'd say that the rubber bumper grooves have been made wet at some point turning the schmutz into some sort of glue.

Carefully insert a thin blade screw driver top under the rubber bump strip entering the seam, working your way gently around the perimeter. The halves will at some point pop apart, trust me.

Pm effing....... !

I got the effing Tri star apart. It took me about 2 hours of fiddling with the rubber seal.

This was the most difficult one yet.

Thanks for your help Dave.

Yippee. Wash the rubber bumper in hot water & dish soap to thoroughly clean out the schmutz and let it dry thoroughly before reassembly. Use a toothbrush to get deep into the groove channels. Mr Clean Magic Eraser will rub off any stubborn scuffs and baseboard paint transfer. Never reassemble a vacuum cleaner or any other metal electric device until the washed parts are bone dry. Any trace of moisture will only promote rust and corrosion. (as does moisture displacing WD-40 temporary lube - I do not allow it on my workbench)
But you know this...:-)

It ain't oil...it's silicon based dispersant that attracts dust as the alcohol carrier base evaporates.

There are similar cautions over the chemical makeup of regular household 3-in-1 compared to Machine and motor oil 3-in-1. Besides the formula difference the cans are labeled in blue or red.

i thought it was just regular 3 in 1 oil with water added so it can be sprayed.

* because it IS an effing iphone. * :-)

Other iphone users will have to chime in here.

But seriously Brad, I do not and would not have an iphone; my cellphone is a Blackberry and I use extensively my Blackberry Playbook 64 GB tablet. Both can shoot pictures and HD video. Video shot with either downloads in correct horizontal aspect nop matter what angle I hold the cameras at. When I download photos I auto-rotate those shot at 90 degrees in picture editing software.

But I must say the resolution of tady's cell camera lenses have come a looooong way.
Your pictures are beautifully clear and the shine you put on the Compact almost requires sunglasses.

Wonderful resto, Brad. Thank you for providing the link, too. Gonna get me some...

Dave

Very nice TriStar Brad! :)
Are you going to install the Vibra Groomer III Disturbulator in the PN?

A good tip for taking the Tristar halves apart is to take a thin slotted screw driver and slide it in between the rubber bumper and the top shell, and pry the top shell up off of the bumper. Helps taking the two shells apart faster. That machine looks great! I serviced 4 Tristars in 1 day last saturday at work. Great machines! Is that a DXL with a replacement bag chamber lid?? Mine looks identical to yours but the lid to the bag chamber is the same colour as the whole body of the machine. Also, I have the same problem with my iPhone when uploading pictures on the forum too. Cant figure it out.

Daniel :-)

Hi Brad,

I have the same problem.  Here is a link that explains the problem and how to work around it.  Hope it helps.  Basically, if I want to post a picture to VCCC taken on my iPhone, then I have to download the pictures to my computer, then post them to the site and all is good.
