Strangest thing..
When I worked maintenance at a Holiday Inn, they had a fleet of a dozen sanitaires of varying age and models. I kept them all in great running order and the last time I checked they still have most of them. Anyway, I have removed the following from a lot of vacs (not just those) the nastiest thing was a condom and more often than not the wrappers from such, nail clippers, jacks (the metal toy thingys), book of matches (what was left of it) straws, sugar packets, change, and lastly my absolute favorite a Barbie head. No joke, it was stuck inside a Clarke wide path machine.

I so got this one A few years ago I removed a pair of panties from and Oreck. Poor guy came in hollering his vacuum was broken and still under warranty. The look on his face was priceless when I pulled panties out of the intake right in front of him. | ||

i have a neighbor who is very rough on vacuums they went threw a oreck in three months so she went out and got a hoover empower and she had it for six years and she was useing the house and she sucked up her sons hampster and he was a skinny little thing and he went in and i got called up to see what was wrong with it she always called me up to fix it and the little guy got stuck at the end of hose before going up in the chamber so now shes on a dyson i wonder how long that one will last

I got a Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive bagged from Habitat. I knew when I tried it there it was clogged because it was really loud and the performance light was on. Yet it had a brand new bag in it.
Turned out someone had sucked up a cigarette pen and it caused the hose to be clogged all the way down to the intake. There was also a dryer sheet stuck inside the brush roll over the intake. Plus little toys and bits of crayon along with other small items in the hose. Fortunately the machine was in like new condition otherwise and didn't stink or anything. That hose was really clogged badly though. Every time I thought it was clear, more stuff kept falling out. | ||

I have had a mouse skeleton lodged in the power head of an E-series Rainbow along with a condom in a D4 (shoebox) PN, a tampon in the hose of an E2 gold with a hair pin holding it back. It goes on and on. | ||

I vacuumed up quite a few roaches (not the insectoid variety) out of the ashtrays of cars when I worked at a car wash in high school, but they never got stuck in the nozzle. I picked up a Kirby Gsix at a thrift shop a few years ago that had a AA battery wedged up in the floor nozzle, effectively immobilizing the brush roll. I'm pretty sure that was what got it donated. I recently vacuumed up a tissue with my Kirby Legend II and it got wrapped around the belt shaft and caught fire from the friction. It smoked up my bedroom a bit but didn't do any damage.

I found a mouse stuck inside a Rainbow D4 4 quart water basin that I serviced for a customer. No wonder why the vac smelled like mice!
Then I found a TriStar A101 (MG1) with the bag full all the way to the hose handle. The PN had its brush roller fully wrapped with hair & carpet fiber strands, which caused the motor overload button to reset. It didn't have any other accessories; just the hose, wands & PN The next find was a Shop Vac 6 gallon vac that had dirty water still inside the vac drum. It smelled like a septic tank! Then I had a Electrolux Epic 6000 that had its hose (genuine newer style coiled vinyl PVC) clogged with toothpics & a Vis-A-Vis marker. It had all accessories including the SideKick 1 (both the 1692 PN & SideKick brush rollers had jammed bearings & wrapped with hair & a 'rag style' throw rug on the 1692 PN Next came a Hoover Elite (Soft & Light) full of rocks; the fan was split in half | ||

A small size bottle of cherry flavored personal lube. Was caught in the elbow on the back of a non self propelled Hoover WT, right where the hose attaches and then it makes a sharp bend into the bag. I’ve found disgusting things, like used feminine product applicators (ONLY THE APPLICATOR TUBE) or sometimes even a tampon still in the wrapper, which isn’t nasty really. Found food goop, and then all the usual large debris we all have pulled out of a vacuum. But when you work in the business, you literally do see it all!!

I found a hair curler in a Miele S7 Twist once. I’ve also found a clothes pin in a Riccar Vibrance right behind the little door you open to add an extension hose. I’ve found many things in many other vacuums like an entire bag of screws in a Kirby G6. A bunch of screws and confetti were on there including the bag that the screws came in! It’s crazy what I’ve found in machines that have come in for service.

I ordered a Kirby Sentria off shopgoodwill.com. Opened it up in my hallway, everything good, all fine. The next day walking through the hallway had a slightly rusted brown sewing pin that got slightly stabbed into the bottom of my foot! It likely fell out of the nozzle and hid in the carpet. Ran under cold water and drenched in hydro peroxide and all was well.
Oh and the other time I ordered a Oreck Halo from a Brooklyn apartment slum and it had cockroaches crawling in it! Luckily I caught them in time before they could get into my house, they were just chilling inside the wheels and light area and I'm sure the rest of it. It's been sealed in a bag in my garage for a year and I do not intend to bring it back inside until it's fully dismantled and cleaned and fumigated, that is for sure. And I am still not sure yet but I possibly might have a Kirby 500 series vacuum with asbestos drywall/concrete dust in it, not certain on that yet, want to have it tested just to be sure. So far that was the "craziest" thing found in a vacuum, in terms of a story anyway. I am sure once I get working on my own vacuums I will find a lot more, I am betting. I dream of someday finding a diamond ring or some jewelry in one of these so I can get rich, lol | ||

So ... as I am said before my Grandfather owned a department store but was obsessed with cleaning and never threw anything away.. So in like..1950 he bought my grandmother a nice huge fancy diamond ring with some red stones. and it went missing a month later. I heard this story when I as a kid, I heard when I was growing up, I heard it when got married, I still hear my mother talking about it years after my grandparents had passed away. I inherited their old house when they passed away, and ... maybe 4 years ago was going through the junk in the basement. Some had been sitting there since 1950. In the corner were two vacuums, an Electrolux and a kirby. My mother said, "I remember the day we bought them. The Electrolux broke and by chance a Kirby guy came to the door and he bought it. So fast forward.. I opened the Electrolux and the bag has disintegrated and wrapped up in some ...the only way I can describe it is....black ancient tar like dirt, was something hard. Bingo... The ring. I can still hear my grandfather, with his Eastern Accent saying, "my god, my god, remember that ring I bought you? and you lost it? And I can hear my grandmother saying with her European accent, "shut up, my god, it's 50 years ago I think you gave it to your other girlfriends.. stupid old man..go have another drink."

 I was wondering why my Dyson DC40 mkII kept clogging. After some troubleshooting I found phone sim card adapter inside the tube in the ball. That tube is very narrow so no wonder it got stuck. | ||

Small screw...
Re-reading this thread brought back something I had forgotten. Shortly after I acquired my Kirby G5, which has evolved into my 'frankenkirby', I shook out the emptor and found a small screw. It was brass, with a short shank and a wide head. It appeared to be one that would have held a wire in place on an electrical outlet or light switch. While it's a pretty mundane thing in and of itself, what made it so odd is it was a perfect substitute for a missing screw on the machine itself--the one that goes at the bottom of the plastic trim plate on the rear of the machine, just above the Tech Drive pedal and frequently goes missing. I can only think that a previous owner/user had put this screw in place of the original but it had worked loose and been vacuumed up. I screwed it in nice and tight, check it periodically and so far, it hasn't fallen out.
