I took some of these to John Gregory for a play date, inspection. The U4003 turns out to be a FACTORY REFURBISH!  Didn't know they did that this late.

That cleaner is rare (for several reasons).

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

Next: There is absolutely NO EVIDENCE of this machine EVER being serviced, EVER. Until now. Both were stripped down, and, given a thorough HOOVER servicing.

They were waiting for me when I got there.

They were originally from Mr. Dick Pike.  Here they are, working/sounding like they did they day they were taken out of their boxes.

Tom serviced the red one in N. Canton.

Here they are, at the play date,  with the one from the newly freshened up Tarantula Arms.

Beautiful machines John! Thanks for posting them.

I see one of the cleaners in one of the pictures has the Royal Crest on the Hedlite lens, I didn't know US Hoovers had that.

We  don't "over here".  It's one of yours. I must get a "Senior" some day from your side of the pond.  I'd LOVE one of those floor nozzles that "flip".  HOOVER never did that over here.

Yes, a RANGER!!!!!!

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

I now have 6 RANGERS.  That might b enough.  I appreciate them,  and,  they have grown on me.  The first time I ever saw one,  I ALMOST DIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! right there on the floor. (In my aunt's house.  MUST be careful about that)

But,  they grew on me.  I don't really 'need' anymore, as I have a nice selection of them.  Now, a Senior,  etc..  I'd make room.

Beautiful Hoovers, all three!

Shining examples of the elegantly functional designs Hoover was known for, from the brilliant mind of industrial designer Richard Wareham. May there be many more beats, sweeps and cleans in their future!

Oh, that's exciting!! You may be able to try my Celebrity by then as well!! I have acquired an actual Celebrity IV Elite power nozzle, I have a neck arriving for it in the mail very shortly and then I'll post photos. Joel is extremely busy but claims the Celebity suction unit is doing very well. He found a quadraflex power head to go with it that he's working on. I'll use that Quadraflex head for a Dimension 1000 canister that I acquired the two are the proper mates-- same color and would be proper matched, so I'm quite eager and excited for when that's ready!!

I've been on a DESPERATE search for a decent hose for the Dimension 1000 though. So if you know anyone that may I've one in decent shape and material== I'M QUITE INTERESTED AND THE WALLET IS OPEN!!!!

Thanks and hope all is well with you. Looking forward to trying some vacs. I'd also like to try one of your Decade 800's, its been quite a while since I've used one of those and would be a neat comparison to my Decade 80 I think!! hahaha!!

Happy Holidays to happy vacuuming to all!!

My mom has the Gold U4007. But does she use it? No, my mother and sister use an ORECK instead. Hopefully, my sister will move out soon and take the Oreck with her. Nothing against Oreck but the Convertible is a better cleaner. My mother received a Convertible at her wedding shower and bought a new one at Sears in the early 90’s. She should know better.

Is it me or that the Hoover Dial A Matic bagged self propelled uprights do not clean nearly as well as the Hoover WindTunnel bagged self propelled uprights? Thanks.

Post# 210865 , Reply# 38   12/22/2012 at 15:27 (4,114 days old) by KirbyUltimateG (Troy Ohio 45373 USA)

I had a Dial A Matic from 2003-2009. I had two WindTunnels. I had the 1st one from 2001-2006 and I had the 2nd one from 2006-2007.
When I had my DAM and my two WT's, I did a cleaning test on my medium pile nylon plush carpeting. The WT's cleaned circles around the DAM in deep cleaning and grooming and suction/airflow and filtration.
My DAM was a 1976 U6039-030 bagged self propelled model.
My 1st WT was a 2001 bagged self propelled model. My 2nd WT was a 2006 bagged self propelled model.

i think they are going forward with new product ...the tooling for those units was all sold off during the auction of north canton and has been converted into other things for other companies....saddly they had their time and hopefully the technology that made them great will live on....my giving them my collection insures that will happen....

Speaking of new product and tooling..............

The very first photo shows a bright green machine to the right and in the background. I bears the Hoover crest but I've never seen one. With the placement of the release handle on front and the onboard hose in the rear, it almost looks like a re-badged Sebo upright.

The WindTunnel has much better carpet cleaning than the DAM and has much better suction/airflow and has much better filtration than the DAM/Concept One/PowerMax/PowerDrive. However, The Concept One/PowerMax/PowerDrive has even better carpet cleaning than the WindTunnel. A 1980 Hoover Concept One would outclean a 1980 Eureka ESP. Does anybody agree with me?

Yep, the Windtunnel is far superior to the DAM. I've used both as daily drivers, and the Windtunnel has much stronger airflow and a better brush roll for a bypass system. The Concepts are fantastic. They really dig into the carpet and groom the fibers.

Well, I'LL agree with you.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture

Agreed,  the D.A.M. was good,  but, it had it's flaws.  The Concept seemed to correct all of those flaws.  It was a great vacuum, and, still is today.  The BEST thing about a D.A.M.,  I'll admit, is the tool hookup.  It is as SIMPLE as it gets. Here are the 2 cleaners side by side.

They made one in burgundy, as well.  They were like apartment vacuums.  They take a C bag.  The Lark was also a form of an electrick  stick vac.  t's a nice little machine.  It has tools which go in the front,  kinda like a Kirby.

concept agitators were always quadroflex with the exception of a blue and tan u3315-070 made for kmart which had a unique agitator that looked like a dialamatic agitator because it had metal beater bars and one row of dialamatic brush strips....this was later replaced with the two brush or single row concept agitator later used in the concept strip down yet power surged u3341....in teal green....these agitators due to their pulley width would prohibit theit use in dial a matics and viceversa

Concept One U3315-070

I actually have this model and, quite frankly, I cannot see any difference between this model and those with the Quadraflex agitators as far as carpet cleaning performance is concerned. Both do an excellent job!

I still think a 1980 Hoover Concept One U3103 would outclean a 1980 Eureka ESP 5070A in terms of deep cleaning medium pile nylon plush carpeting with a pad underneath. Does anybody agree?

To answer your question, the Eureka ESP was never in direct competition with the Hoover Concept. In the early 1980s, Eureka released the Precision to directly compete with the Concept. It was self-propelled, had a cord reel, and used the VG II with a 7amp motor. I own both the Hoover and Eureka, and the Hoover is much easier to use and cleans significantly better.

Wasn't there also a maroon colored Eureka Precision? I've seen the blue-gray one, but the maroon version only in pictures. Was it a more deluxe model and were there any other versions of the Precision? I seem to recall seeing them around 1990.

What about the Turbomaster/Innovation?

alexhoovers94's profile picture

How did the innovations compare with the concepts, did they clean as well or was one better? the innovation also used the quadraflex agitator (what we called the activator, over here)

alex the innovation hit our shores in 1987-88 and were a magnificent cleaner with amazing cleaning power and impressive performance and that lighed height adjuster was amazing...concept vs innovation too close to call but definately on the same playing field

IMHO, Hoover made a huge mistake by discontinuing the Celebrity/Electronic 1000/Spirit/Dimension 1000 PN canisters! IMHO, Those models were Hoover's best canisters ever!

hoover only was responding to the complaints of women that the vacuums were too heavy to lug around and to heavy to carry.....saddly hoover is consumer driven and the cleaners slipped through the cracks

Some exciting news in the paper over the weekend. Hoover will be hiring 200 people over the next 3 years. Once again, Hoover is bringing jobs to our area. According to the paper, they are hiring electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, technicians, and industrial designers. It really makes sense, since Hoover believes in innovation and in giving us the best possible products. Then again, with a name like Hoover how could they go wrong? I just wanted to share the good news with everyone on this page.
