Over the summer, I bought a Hoover model 28, it is in great condition cosmetically, and runs, but definitely needs the carbon brushes replaced. They are about 1/2" long, one works fine, but the other one sparks and snaps, and looks like it has been contaminated (possibly with oil?) and is worn unevenly. The motor seems fine otherwise, and I would like to get it running properly. I checked at an old vac shop in town, but was told they were unavailable (duh) and good luck finding them. I am sure somebody on here has a set (new or used is fine as long as they work properly) and I am hoping somebody can help me out. Thanks!

Do you have a picture of the old brushes by any chance? I might be able to help you out, as I work at a vac shop, and we have carbons for old machines, it just depends what they look like to match them up. Thanks, Daniel :-) |

I got the brushes today, and got it running... not exactly purring like a kitten, but running. At least I was able to vacuum the entire house with it! It sounds far better, no snapping and cracking, but is now making a funny hum. The noise is almost undetectable with the nozzle lifted off the floor, but as soon as a load is put on the motor, it starts this hummmm hummmmmmmm hummmmmmmmmm hum humhummm type of noise. I need to grease the lower bearing, Will see if this helps. I also found out that the band, that holds the (ugly replacemen t) bag onto the connector has rusted through. The bag is continuously blowing off of the connector.
