I have a beam unit in my collection, it was actually the first central vacuum unit I got. I live in an apartment so don't have any piping, but I can attach the hose to a utility valve and it works great. Despite what they say, the beam filter does not completely clean itself. Dumping the dirt bucket is a mess, and the dirt clings to the filter. Fortunately, there is an adapter you can get that will convert many of the beam vacuums to use bags. I did that, and never looked back. Works just as well, and no dirty filters or dirty buckets.
