I bought a vintage 1970's Hoover Convertible U4123 in ebay, one of the very last models with the metal base. Saw an identical model like this at a Maryland motel in 1979 that the maids were using. It's my favorite color! RED!

It has the bag they introduced on the U4127 and all Convertibles afterwards starting in 1975.

It's red and has no headlight with the bumped up hood, which I was dissapointed in. But it has the souped up amp motor they used in the later models in the 1970-1980's, which spins faster than the older models of the 1958-1975 period.

Just cleaned her bag up in the bathtub, and took a toothbrush to the rest of it and got her running. Needed a new belt, and some lube. Motor brushes needs some lube too I think as it sounds dry and the roller bar needs some new bristles.

Incredible suction!

Congratulations! That is a GREAT looking machine! I saw that one on eBay and followed it for a while, but decided to pass! I am very glad to see someone get it though who will appreciate it and take care of it and it not end up in a scrap metal pile somewhere.

belts

I have the same vac, it's been in the family forever! I love it! It sounds like a 747 but it works amazing. It beats as it sweeps! Modern vacs can't compare. I can only seem to get belts that are so tight, small. Are all the belts supposed to be this hard to put on?

Tight belts

@J, I had trouble installing a belt on a friends Hoover too. Even after soaking the belt in almost hot water for 20 min, didn't help. Even if I had managed to stretch it on, I wouldn't want a belt that tight as it can be rough on the bearings and pulley and would probably heat the belt up too. Best to go to a vacuum repair shop that sells belts and let them match the correct belt that is for your specific machine.
