I have a Kirby Tradition with a handle bail spring/cylinder that can no longer keep the handle up. I have tried tinkering with it,but it's so complicated that  i just put some rubber bands around the front axle and cord hook to keep it up. Although I know almost everything there is to know about Kirbys, I can't figure out the 516-LII handle spring system. Any explanations and/or photos would be appreciated.

Thank You

there is a part you need and it costs $40 so it is best to go into the local kirby dealer and ask them to wind up the spring and oil it. they most likely have to tool and it would be cheap for them to do it. only about $12. I did his with a 512. but they shattered he motor housing And they bought a new machine for me

The spring inside either broke or came off its set screw.  If it just came off the screw, then you can reattach it.  You'll then need a special winding tool to rewind the tension in the spring.  I can help you through that procedure.  Servicing the the handling spring on the 516 to LII is fairly simple.  However, models older than the 516 require a completely different tool and THREE hands!  If you don't use the correct tool and great care, you will break the lugs on the casting.
