Right oh - first off - there appears to be a bit of a discrepency in the dating system of the forums.
Stated on the forum pages is the year 1980, which is used to stipulate vintage or modern, but on creating a thread the age thing is stipulated as being 20 years from now, so going back to only 1992.
As most people would define Turbopowers and their brothers and sisters as being 'modern plastic', in comparison to Juniors and Seniors, I think purple is the best place for this thread, despite the oldest machines being from 1983 - nearly 30 years ago!

Here goes an attempt at a pictorial history of the original Hoover Turbopower's, Turbolite's, Turbomaster's, Turbopower2, Turbopower1000 and Turbopower3's. Going to take a fair few nights to cover the lot and there are some machines that I just dont have a photo of, so any help with these mystery machines would be greatly appreciated.

Been meaning to do a thread like this for a while and Alex's enquiry thread has given me the kickstart I need to do it.

Having thought about it, it is easier to deal with models based on model number, rather than year of introduction, but I will reference the year and series where possible.

I have some questions along the way as well, so hopefully some of your guys will be able to give me some answers.

Having accumulated a fair old collection of Turbo's over the last five years with Rob (Turbomaster1984), most of the photos will be three quarter portrait shots of our machines, interspersed with official images from brochures and photos of other collectors machines who luckily have some of the machines that we dont own yet. In anticipation of using these latter photographs, many thanks to their owners.
Feel free to add your own too as we go along.

Here goes!

U1050 Turbopower

Ironically the lowest model Turbopower is right from the end of the original Turbopowers production run and was one of the last if not THE last non-junior or Total System model produced.

Very plain Jane, this machine had the air freshner blanked off and didn't have a lower chord hook - basically it turned on and off and that was your lot!

boasting the Candy serial numbering system, I have no idea how to accurately date this machine, though it does have something to do with week of production allegedly!

U1060 Turbopower (Total System)

With the U1050 as the standard, model U1060 was the deluxe version boasting its set of on board tools.
Apart from that it was again a Plain Jane model...

What a marvellous idea for a topic! If I could just add, this blue U1050 turbopower was not quite the last like it, as Hoover did one in the same red as the very basic red total system cleaner. It was to all intents the same cleaner as the total system, except of course there were no on-board tools and the handle was red and not slate. This was about 1998, and our local Co-Operative store ran them for around £70.

Hi Benny.

Thats what I am after - never knew that snippet of info. Maybe someone will be able to clarify which machine it was, or we might stumble across it later in the thread.

Fingers crossed.

U1100 Turbopower Junior - the original

Circa 1983...

...and the first Turbopower Junior is released onto the market.

Decked out in Pale Mink and Mink, this machine formed the bottom of the original range.
This machine had to have handle modifications, as the original proved not upto the job and would snap after use. The original handle style can be seen in the first picture of this thread, with mine and Rob's machine below boasting the later beefier style...

U1102 Turbopower Junior - from the leccy board!

With the new models, the Electricity Board commissioned its own exclusive version, in the form of the U1102.

This machine was decked out in White Sand and Mocha Brown, though this colour tends to 'go off' over the years.
This one isnt too bad, though should be a tad lighter...

As this is in model order, the next machine is the Junior model from the 2nd generation 1986 series lineup.

Paul, did you know that with the earliest Junior, with the problematic handle grip, was a plug & socket connection in the middle of the metal handle? Hoover soon changed this to a continuous length of flex which had to be pushed inside the handle when assembling. The Turbopower cleaners underwent some major design and production changes from 1983 until 1986.

Ooooh - just noticed that this machine is 1985! I mentioned in another thread about a U2332 in existence being dated 1985 and wondering whether they were produced and stored for release in 1986!
Methinks that the better part of five months worth of production would be a lot of cleaners to store.

Perhaps we can state that the 2nd Generation of Turbopowers was released for sale in 1985 and not 1986!

Post# 201715 , Reply# 15   9/25/2012 at 13:29 (4,202 days old) by turbopowerpaul (UK)

Hi Benny.

Never knew about it being a plug and socket connection! We have one of the original handle setups in storage, sans the cleaner it was originally fitted to. Never paid much attention to it, so will have to try find it and have a look.

Have just been informed that we do have (we think) the final red Turbopower you mentioned from 1998. Will take a while to get to it though, as its a high numbered model!

Paul

U1220 - the 2nd series Turbo Junior - later hood style!

Somewhere along the production run, the arrangement of the decals on the hoods of U1220 was modified, with the following results.

This machine is dated October 1985, so the original arrangement didnt last that long!

Hello Paul. When the Turbopower first went into production, the Juniors had a 2-part handle which was completely separate from each other. It literally plugged together. This involved many parts, such as the plug and socket, the leads, not to mention assembly time which of course cost money. I don't know if Hoover dispensed with the plug & socket before, during, or after the handgrip was redesigned. I once saw an Electricity Board Turbopower Junior with the original handgrip too. I notice yours is the older style in that colour as it has no air freshener but does have the newer handle grip.

U1222 Turbopower Junior

Continuing to cater for the leccy board, the original U1102 was replaced with this model - the 1st version U1222, repeating the White Sand and Mocha Brown colour scheme, but also boasting the air freshener arrangement at the top of the bag...

U1284 Sprite

a deviation from the standard Turbopower hood style came in the form of the U1284 Sprite, from circa 1989.

Not the prettiest cleaner, in my opinion, quite what the point of it was is lost of me. Was it cheaper than the Turbopower Junior?

Paul sorry to interupt you again, but are you quite sure the U1222 stopped in 1989, as I am sure other Board exclusive cleaners in this colour did continue into the 1990's.

U1290 - the first photographless model!

This was effectively a model U1220, in Black Tulip Shadow and Grey, sold in a box that also contained a complimentary set of tools.

This version was introduced in 1989 and smacks of being a way of disposing of the older colour scheme model in a simple way whilst being able to charge a non-discounted proce, due to the presence of tools! Might be wrong, but thats my theory, especially when you consider that two other 'new' models were released alongside the U1290, again boxed with complimentary tools and which were a re-model-numbered U2332 and U2336's!

Any official photos of the U1290 gratefully received.

Paul

Hi Benny.
Re U1222 production - its an assumption, based on the fact that the other machines from that series were discontinued at that time. Production of U1222 could have continued, but I havent anything to prove either way.

Hi Benny.

Dont know if it was just the box or the cleaner stamped with U1290, but the next model could give a hint to the answer, for they did the boxed tools thing with their new core junior model!

U1296 Turbopower Junior - with tools

This was essentially a U1294, but with a box of tools enclosed with the cleaner. A very plain box, this cleaner is dated right from the start of 3rd Generation production, but was never advertised in any brochures that I have seen.

This particular cleaner has been powered up less than five times in its life!

Missing from the photo is the baseplate tool thingy-me-jig converter...

U1412 Junior

U1412 Junior was the replacement for the U1284 Sprite and took its place at the bottom of the range, underneath the Turbopower Juniors which at 410watts, beat the Sprite and U1412's 400watts.

Colour was Chambertin Blue and Deep Chambertin Blue.

Model U1436 is an elusive model, for which I have never found a photograph.

Those are all the softbag Turbopowers that I know of. If anyone knows of others, then do say as it will be good what else to look out for.

The only other softbag Turbo's were the two Turbolites (well one model really), but these are numbered fairly high model number wise, so will come later on the thread.

Will make a start on Hardbags next!....but thats for tomorrow

I had a Turbo power junior same colour scheme as featured in reply 38 but the hood design was the same shape as reply 20 but with no headlight. I gave this to my sister when I bought a DC01 ( the breast cancer research model in silver and pale blue ), a decision I regretted pretty much straight away. My sister still maintains it was the best vacuum she ever had even though the handle did break on it. Thanks you for this wonderful thread, my interest has really been sparked by the photo in reply 46, I have never seen turbopowers like the two to the left of the photo, the one on the far left reminds me of a hotpoint swallow for some reason!

That pic is of my Sprite taken in about 2006! completely forgot I had that, was a smashing little vac that. We saved it from the tip and the bag was absolutely stuffed with sand. it cleaned up ok though. Can't remember for the life of me what ever happened to it.

Anyway, heres my contribution, again thanks to the owner of the pic, can't remember who it belongs to but its an odd one, i've never seen another

Hi Paul

Thanks for a great thread - I really do have to applaud the work you put into creating it.

The 1412 Junior is indeed safe and sound and I was sure, from memory, that the handle assembly was different - looks like they were using up parts from the Sprite for I cannot see aby other reason why it should be different.

I am also here to say that the U1650 is an absolutly brilliant cleaner, I dont have any experience of the previous models and I picked up my U1650 for the vast sum of £1.20 - yes, less that the price of a loaf a bread. Even at 650watts the suction is terrific and it grooms the carpet as well as ANY other cleaner I have used.

Hi Paul.
Thats the problem with Turbopowers - so many of the blooming things and once you get away from the core ranges, finding information about them is difficult. Gets even harder towards the end of production, as obviously they became a kind of niche model that Hoover probably want that interested in and so publicity got rarer and rarer.

Hi Paul continued & Gareth
The two weird Turbopowers pictured, alongside the more normal example, are I am assuming prototypes. The picture is a screen grab from the TV and I think it was the BBC programme about Hoover's free flights fiasco. Interestting to see how the design evolved from the prototypes to the finished article.

Hi Ryan.
I remember the time that unusual red Turbopower first came on the scene. I think it was mentioned that it was a U2408, though it doesnt resemble the U2408 that I know of. If its owner is reading this, any chance of reconfirming your machines identity?
Am still working through the Electrolux history - your page scan has come in very useful. When I feel more happy with it, I will send you a copy to proof read for me!
Be interesting to see your protitype example Gareth - does it resemble any of the two shown above?

Hi Al.
With 650watts to play with, the U1650 is certainly an increase over the original 410 that the U1100 had to play with. Our U1650 is a bit unwell and will require some tinkering when its next out of storage.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Paul

U2336 Turbopower Autoflex - the Glass Turbopower

Here we have the top of the 1985 introduced range, in the form of the infamous U2336 in Lacquer Red and Deep Lacquer Red.

Infamous as a consequence of this particular model becoming renowned for snapping and cracking to pieces as you used it. Indeed, because of this unfortunate fragility they are one of the rarer models from the core ranges of Hoover Turbopowers and to find one in good condition, or in any condition for the matter, is a rare thing.

Its fragility is a shame, beacuse it is a very attractive colour scheme indeed....

Through to 1989

The models covered tonight bring us through to the start of 1989 and from now on the first series of Turbopowers begin to get a bit more complicated, with exclusive models being produced in ever greater models.

Will progress further tomorrow.

Hi Ryan

Thanks for the link. I think thats a very nice condition U2334.

Hi Gareth.
I doubt too, what with all the upheaval that Hoover has gone through over the last 20 years, that those prototypes exist anymore. Pretty sure that they will have been shredded donkeys years ago.
Unfortunately history goes out of the window, when a firm is taken over or goes bust - in the UK we have seen it with Hoover, Hotpoint and Servis.
On the laundry side of things - Hoover had to be told of their washing machine collection, in great danger of destruction and abandonned in one of their derelict factories, by members of Discuss O Mat! We are told that themachines have now been moved - fingers crossed that we havent been spun a yarn.
It is widely rumoured that when Indesit took over Hotpoint, its heritage collection went in a skip!
Servis used to have a heritage collection of machines, but their location is now lost in the mists of time. Probably skipped years ago.

Its all a bit depressing. Its upto us guys to do the preserving and I dont think we do a bad job of it either. All power to us all.

U2406 - a bit of a mystery machine

From now on things get a bit rocky with the Turbopowers, as model numbers spread far and wide through the numbering range, with handfuls of exclusive models randomly plonked within it.

U2406 was decked out in Pale Carmargue Blue and Deep Carmargue Blue.

A while back a collector had this machine listed on ebay, in a rather weird shade of blue, which was described as a U2408.

Was it a U2406, or indeed one of the handful of colour variations that were given the model number U2408?

U2408 one of three versions!

No picture of this one, but a certain collector with nice collection of vintage Argos catalogues might be able to oblige! hint hint :-)

I dont know the order but, after the possible blue version above, there was also a version in Black Tulip Shadow and Gloss Black.

U2408 possibly another version

Ryan, earlier in the thread, posted a photo of a red version mystery Turbopower Plus.
Remembering the discussion at the time, it was stated that this too was a model U2408 and was dated from 1990!
Arghhhhh the irritation of reusing model numbers....

U2560 Turbopower

Here is one of the situations where Hoover took an existing cleaner, enclosed a box of tools for free in the cleaners box and gave it a new model number.

Obviously no different in any way shape or form to the U2332 in Wedgewood Green and Deep Wedgewood Green, here is the U2560....

This was another free box of tools equipped machine, a version of the U2336 Glass Turbopower, in Laquer Red and Deep Laquer Red.

No photos of one of these, as they have probably all smashed and cracked out of existence.

Forgot to mention that all these free box of tools enclosed models, were introduced in 1989.

This model is also a bit glass-ish!

I think I am write in saying that this was a 400watts default model, from which you could get 410watts by holding the switch in its upper third posistion.

The switch had to be held manually in position to get the 'boost' and would fall back to off, when released.

Something like that anyway...

No sooner had the new 1989 series been introduced, then Hoover did their new model because it has free tools trick.

This was a Co-Op exclusive model, produced in a rather uninspiring colour scheme of Light Pewter and Carmargue Grey - a very bland cleaner that doesn't age very well.

Also this is another glass Turbopower, with a tendency for cracking - push it around and you can hear it splintering!

Hi Alex

Glad you are enjoying the thread and hope it will provide a useful reource for the future.

Re the object stuffed under the back of the U2602 - its a small jar that was used to get the cleaner to stand up straighter. As with many a turbopower and master, our U2602 suffers from trunion wear, with a consequential rather drunken lean were the support not to be there. Trunion lean isn't very photogenic :-)

Post# 202273 , Reply# 108   9/29/2012 at 13:56 (4,198 days old) by madabouthoovers ()

I found that the reason the TP1 leans backwards so much is that the screw retaining the support on the handle relase pedal side comes loose and works itself out. Take the hood off and retighten the screws, and the lean is made much better. At least, this is what was happening on my U2332 model. Pity the brushroll tends to make such a racket - were they all prone to brushroll bearing wear and vibration?

My only TP1 model, getting hard to find them on Ebay local to me now:

Post# 202275 , Reply# 109   9/29/2012 at 14:12 (4,198 days old) by vintagerepairer (England)

The leaning. Several reasons. As said by madabouthoovers, the screw coming loose is one problem. Screwing it back in solves the issue for the short term, but I always used to fit a thicker, longer screw, such as one from the handle bail of a Hoover Junior. Tighten it until it pierces the other side of the chassis and it won't come loose again.

Another problem. The nylon bush which sits onto the hardbag (its the part which the foot pedal latches) rides against the chassis, causing both the chassis and bush to wear down. The bush is easily replaced, but if the worn chassis is in otherwise good order it is not worth the bother of changing it just to make the body sit up more firmly.

The hardbag itself can split on the under side, making it less rigid and a bit saggy. Also if one of the protrusions on the chassis which holds the wheel is split this will allow the hardbag to lean backwards.

Post# 202284 , Reply# 110   9/29/2012 at 14:44 (4,198 days old) by madabouthoovers ()

The nylon bush is a common problem Is should expect in most vacs that use the same design, the constant movement of the handle back and forth creates the friction that wears the bush down. A bit of spray grease on the bush applied on a periodic basis should help prevent this type of wear. As for the chassis or housings splitting, there's not a lot you can do here except try to repair it with superglue or other epoxy resin, or replace the cracked parts - difficult to obtain now though on such an old plastivac.
I may try your solution though on the bush support screws, longer ones would certainly help. Am loathed to use superglue or araldite to glue them in permanently in case I ever need to remove them again.

Benny, on the subject of the brushrolls, I beleive the old Senior range were supposed to be fitted with a king of H clip beween the chassis and the brushroll to stop vibration rattle - are the TP1 models which use the same type of roller bearings supposed to have these H clips fitted as well? my brushroll makes a terrible racket when pulling the cleaner backwards, but stops when pushing forwards. There is wear in the bearings, but the brushroll seems to spin round reaonably quietly when standing idle and the motor running. There is not a H clip fitted between the end of the brushroll and the chassis. My Ranger doesnt have one either, but I've seen them on Ebay and wonder which models should have one fitted.

This is what I mean - what is this part supposed to be for:

Post# 202286 , Reply# 112   9/29/2012 at 14:49 (4,198 days old) by vintagerepairer (England)

From poor memory, I am not sure that the H springs were a genuine Hoover part. I think they were made by A.N.Other to solve the problem of worn metal chassis.

The noise you describe on your cleaner sounds like it is not coming from the brush roller, but from the motor. Try using the cleaner with the belt off. The Turbopower cleaners had this quirk where a vibration on the backward stroke would be present and made the headlight lens shake. I never did get to the bottom of it.

Post# 202290 , Reply# 113   9/29/2012 at 15:50 (4,198 days old) by madabouthoovers ()

Ah, the headlight lens - I already superglued that to stop it vibrating, thats an old classic problem that I had with a TP1 years ago when I had one from new. The wheel glamour cap on my TP1 is another area of rattle as well, but we already discussed the missing washers on the wheel inner side being the initial cause of this problem, but despite adding a nice large washer, the glamour cap still vibrates, funnily enough, moreso on the backwards stroke. The problem is I am a bit of a perfectionist with my cleaners and like them to work as they would from the factory brand new, sadly I think my TP1 is never going to be as new again, and I must put up with its annoying vibrations and rattles. I will buy some new brushroll bearings though as these still seem to be available, and my Ranger needs them as well. Lets see if new brushroll bearings help with the noise. The motor bearings in my TP1 are fine, I checked them when I had the cleaner apart for full cleaning and inspection when I first acquired it.

Fit a new fan, even the slightest deformation would cause a rattle, We used to get in allot of them with vibrations, it was either the fan or the brush roll, anything that spins at speed needs to be balanced and the brush roll is also prone to rattle. A new brush roll and fan should solve your issues, Try the fan first though

The fan may be a possibility - we can still get them here, I've just checked - how do they come off, do I need any special tools? Its easy to forget with the TP1 that they were dirty fan models, as the TP2,1000, and TP3 were all clean fan. Will have to check the fan again more carefully for damage, could even be dirt build up on the blades that are causing an imbalance?

They unscrew and are reverce threaded. When fitting the new one becarfull not to over tighten and strip the thread

, you just need to hold the belt shaft tight , you would just need a screwdriver to pry the spring clips off that hold the fan housing together.

U2662 Turbopower Freedom

as can be seen in the above picture and the one below, the system wasnt actually that good at retaining dust, with a proportion of dust sucked in by the cleaner, escaping through the filter and back into the atmosphere - hence the nice layer of sust on the grilles in front of the filter.

The filters were fiddly to fit and any inaccuracies in the fitting would produce gaps, with consequential leakage of dust.

The Permabag system will be covered in greater detail, when we reach the Turbomasters!

Big jump in model numbers (for some reason) takes us upto the Total System version of the U2724.
Colour scheme was Stellar Red and Dijon Grey.

Back to U2602 briefly

Just a note again on this model:
the U2602 Total System was still in production and appeared in the brochures alongside the 1991 series of models and remained on sale into the mid 90's.

Hi Chris.

Thanks for the pictures you have posted.

Re: the black machine - the colour would associate that machine with being a version of U2408, which is officially described as being Black Tulip shadow and Gloss Black. There being no other black turbopowers listed, I would assume its this model.
Maybe model U2408 was THE exclusive model, with the Black version being produced for Littlewoods and the other two versions (the matt blue/grey and later white) being produced for Argos. Its a theory anyway.

I think I agree with you re: your photo of the white Turbopower. Its colouring and date would definitely make it being a U2864 a distinct possibility.

Fingers crosed we shall be able to confirm them all one day.

Thanks again.
Paul

Continuing the 'turbo' theme, these models were christened the Turbolite.

TOP OF THE RANGE! - Turbomaster

The 'turbo' replacement for the Hoover Ranger appeared in 1987, the new models being christened Turbomaster.

The range was developed over the period 1987 to 1988 to comprise:

1x soft bag basic model
1x hard bag basic model
1x hard bag model with variable speed control
1x hard bag model with on board tools
1x hard bag model with on board tools + variable speed control
&
1x exclusive model with on board tools for the electricity board

The 1987 original range comprised of the first three variants, with the three Total Systems coming on the scene in 1988.

The year 1991 saw the final variant introduced, in the form of the Freedom model.

Here we go!

& a finally for tonight ....

a quick detour into the work of the Commercial division of Hoover.

With the predecessor Senior having had Commercial versions, the new top of the Range Turbomaster was also adapted to have a Commercial spin off model - in the form of the C1314.

Derived from the U5094, the only major difference (that I can remember) was that it boasted a longer cable over the domestic cleaner, to assist the cleaning of offices and schools.

Havent the foggiest idea as to what the official name of the colour scheme is...

The roller brush was also termed 'Quadroflex' which I understood was more suited to a commercial carpet. The main colour was identical to that of the domestic electronic cleaner. The rear of bag unit and handle and so one was much darker.

Hi Benny.

Autoflex - whilst I was dealing with the U5080, right about the time you posted your nudge about the chord rewind, I remembered about the autoflex function on the U5080 and U5096. Perfect timing! :-)

Regards the Turbo2 in deep red - I managed to pick up one of these machines late last year, though it still requires a clean up. Thinking about it, myself and Rob will (weather permitting) have to go upto storage, so I will try and dig it out, give it a clean and get some photos of it for this thread.

Thanks for viewing and any snippets of info or corrections - just pop em down and post them.

Cheers

see what you mean Benny about the colour.

So the colour is, at the very least, Cotswold Beige and then a kind of Bambi Brown colour! lol.
Its a smart combination and thanks for the info about the Quadroflex beater bar. I have the leaflet for the C1314, but its deep in the wardrobe. I will dig it out tomorrow, photograph it and post it.

Paul, this is such an excellent thread! Many thanks for all the info provided and the pics.

The U5096 is one of my favourites. When my parents split up in 97, my Dad bought one of these second hand, so I have very fond memories of it. Unfortunately, when he moved in with his then girlfriend in 99, he left it behind in his old flat in favour of her grey Turbo 2 Autosense. Foolish man!

I have some very fond memories behind a lot of these cleaners - some of which I haven't seen in 15 years. The basic red TP U2724 was certainly a blast from the past. A friend of mine from school who lived in a block of flats up the road from us had one of these, but I've not seen one since. I don't suppose they were particularly popular, not being much cheaper than the U2798 and, of course, on-board tools being "the thing to have" of the day.

Again, big thank you for your effort with this thread - it's fantastic that we have resources and references like this preserved online to turn to when we need them

On the subject of the Quadroflex brushroll, wasn't this the brushroll that was present on the Turbolite and US Elite cleaners? I wonder why Hoover decided to include this on the Commercial TM.

They used this roller as Hoover claimed it worked better on commercial carpeting.

I thought that the Commercial model still used the Activator, despite the "Quadraflex" legend. (Think of the Commercial 'Conquest' models: they had the activator fitted as standard).

And I have a sneaky feeling that the American version of the Turbomaster had the same "Quadraflex" legend with the Activator fitted.

Well I must confess I only ever did see one in person and did not see the roller. I am repeating what Hoover said about it in their literature. I did wonder if the roller was in fact the same.

U5132 Turbomaster Freedom

Whats inside?

Usual story of dust up the tube and into the box, with air passing through the filter and back into the atmosphere, with dust falling into the dust box at the bottom.

Success of the system depends on the filter a? being good at waht it does and b) always being fitted and seated properly within its fitting.

Any gaps and the syetm will fail to operate properly, with dust escaping back into the atmosphere...

which then fastens to the cleaner....

U5132 Turbomaster Freedom

With the saga of the Freedom cleaners proving embarrassing for Hoover, with complaints being received of cleaners sucking up dust and then spitting it back out again, Hoover developed a conversion kit for the U5132.

All this did was dispense with the permabag system and convert your U5132 into essentially a U5096, but without the autoflex.

The result was the machine below, which is the only converted U5132 I have ever seen and which was purchased from a Head of department from Hoover a couple of years ago.

The story I have previously heard is that the conversion kit comprised of a plain black door, rather than a colour co-ordinated door which the cleaner below boasts.

Soooo, whether the cleaner below is a non-standard prototype-ish conversion - I dont know? ....

The bag door available as a conversion pack was indeed a different colour from the rest of the cleaner, at least the ones I saw were. I have never seen the likes of your cleaner before, Paul. Perhaps they started out in grey and Hoover found it uneconomical to use this colour. I rated Hoover 10 out of 10 for bare-faced cheek when it came to their idea of a suitable modification for the problems the Freedom suffered. People worked hard and paid good money for a cleaner which had a specific feature, and indeed paid a good deal more for it than the standard Turbomaster bagged cleaner. To have it converted to paper bags was disgusting I thought. The very least Hoover could have done was carry out the conversion and then refund an amount of money equal to the price difference between the U5094 and the U5132.

Hi Benny
The impression that myself and Rob both got was that the conversion that we acquired was a bit one-offish. It will be interesting to see whather anyone has seen a colour co-ordintaed conversion elsewhere, or whether they were all a generic replacement black.

Totally agree with your sentiments re:converted Freedoms. To pay the extra for a flawed machine - a) I would have been generally miffed .... then b) annoyed to have my cleaner modified to place it somewhere between the top of the standard range and the next model down ..... and finally c) livid not to recieve the difference in the form of a refund.

They really got their fingers burnt with the Freedoms and its perhaps surprising that they have surfaced, particularly the Turbopower Feedom, with a fair regularity on ebay.

Paul

Certainly the conversion was simpler, as far as use and number of components were concerned...

Yes, the Turbopower convertion would have been much more difficult. As well as the T plate needing to be changed to one with hinges, there was the new bag door, and, if my memory is correct, the screw holes for the duct in the back of the bag door were in the wrong place to accomodate the standard Turbopower duct. Exactly how Hoover convereted the Turbopower models, I am not sure.

Thats your lot for the moment!

The Turbo2's, 1000's and 3's will have to wait till another thread, as I need a bit more time to process photos of them and, by the time thats completed, this thread will have fallen off the bottom of the forum.

Hopefully this thread and its photos will provide a useful resource for people and, whilst the thread is still live, if anyone finds or sees photos of mystery machines then please add them.

Cheers
Paul

Hi Benny.

I meant to ask that question - whether you or anyone knew of Turbopower freedom conversions?

The black generic blank replacement doors were intended for the entire range then and werent part of a Freedom conversion kit?

Paul

Hello Paul. I had very little to do with either Freedom cleaner as few ever came my way for repair. The one which stands out is a Turbopower Freedom which came in for a new rear bag unit as the original had snapped. I used to stock these in black, but I am sure there was a problem with the screws which held the duct in place being in a different position from the normal Turbopower. I see you have one of these cleaners and I wondered if you were able to look and see?

As it was, I am sure I had to order the exact bag unit for my customer as she was still using her cleaner bagless. I cannot tell you what Hoover's answer was to remedy the Turbopower Freedom problem with dust leakage.

Thinking about the bag unit, if I am right about the screw positions, this meant yet another moulding was in existence. As it was, there were two variations of the black bag housing, one for standard cleaners and one for autoflex which had an additional screw hole. Quite why Hoover fitted all the other mouldings needed for the autoflex corwinder to all bag units and yet not include the screw hole to secure the winder cover is something of a mystery. As well as these, there was a bag housing with the on/off switch hole in the place where the flex winder button would have been, and another where the on/off switch hole was in the place where teh bag full lamp would have been. All of these have been shown in your photographs, albeit in the original colours.

Hoover sold refurbishment kits for Turbopower machines, which consisted of bag housing front & back, handle, unprinted motor hood, plus a handful of other parts. The idea was that a broken machine could be brought back to life, or else a whole new machine built using an existing chassis & motor and whatever other parts were not included in the pack. Black became the obvious choice for major spares, because as your photographs show, there were a good deal of colours made!

I once fitted a paper bag conversion kit to a U2662 Turbopower Freedom. From memory, it included changing the bag door, back box and lower cover plate.

Another mystery machine has popped up - found on eBay and bought by Steve over on The Broom Cupboard.

This one is a U2792, dated November 1991. I can't find any info about it in the catalogues or brochures, but I suspect this may have been a higher end non-Total System that sat between the entry level hardbag U2724 and the entry total system U2798.

Ya know Alex, I had a moment earlier on where I thought "maybe I was being too harsh, maybe I was over reacting, maybe I should get over it". And I unblocked you.

And in 6 words, you've reminded me exactly why I blocked you in the first place. I mean, here is a thread that has taken a long time to put together, not to mention the YEARS of collecting it's taken to get this information together. And we're clearly still finding new information about different models, which is amazing for 20+ year old vacuums.

And what do you have to say? No "this is great, thank you" or "what a great resource for us all!" Oh no. You butt in with your stinking, thoughtless attitude and completely live up to your Negative Nancy nickname.

*BLOCK*

Arsehole.

I don't know what happened.

Cool thread.

I can't look at images of Hoovers without thinking of my mum. Mum died unexpectedly in April last year & despite living in a tiny 1 bedroom bungalow, always had a few vacuum cleaners (just in case..).
Her favourites were always Hoovers from the big '60's Senior we had when I was a boy, through a succession of Turbo's right up to the new PurePower which she loved (but I frankly though was junk), I got for her a few month before her death.

It's such a great thread, isn't it? Major well done to Paul and Rob for the years of collecting it's taken to get all this information together, this is such a great thread to refer back to for info. And yet, we're still finding machines that we never knew existed.

There's another one knocking about somewhere for the Turbopower 2, 3 and 1000's.

Very true Chris and the fact that from what I can see with all this info AND machines that sometimes pop up on auction sites, it is clear to me that this series and the Turbomasters were probably Hoover Europe's finest hours. I doubt there's as huge a following for the Purepower uprights compared to the TP1/TP2/TM series.

Hoover Europe should sit up and notice; clearly they could do with another well made bagged upright as good as the TP2/3 series.

I agree Nar. Stick a HEPA filter, synthetic bag and a stretch hose on a TP2 and they could market that today.

So, bring back the Turbopower 3 (basically) and shove a hepa filter on it with a synthetic bag?! It would never sell, too outdated and heavy, people want lightweigh these days. All be it if they made it to the same quality as the original series, it would be far superior to the Sebo X series. Did I just say that, oops, the match has been struck...

Some more info on the mystery U2792. It was bought from a local, independent firm. I had previously suspected this was a higher end version of the U2724 from the core range, but it may be that this was an exclusive for independent retailers.

Maybe the match has been struck in your mind. If that's the case, bend over and fart into the flame, Alex.

The Riccar uprights in the U.S also sold as Truvox in the UK weigh far more than a Turbopower 2 or 3 series. They weigh 9.3kg

SEBO's uprights are hardly lightweight to lift and of course nothing as yet to come in to replace the Miele S7 - they're still on sale in the UK and they're hardly light.

So, after all these years of your continued posting threads of Hoover Turbopowers, Hoover TP2s, Hoover Elites - you really wouldn't want to see a new one pop up to replace the Purepower?

I think the Purepower should be retired, yes. It is still trotting along, they should bring out a more modern bagged upright, at lease we still have a bagged upright from Hoover.

Of course you will see continued threads concerning said cleaners, I am a Hoover collector.

Me too, Sam! Even more impressive that Steve got the receipt for it. It's dated November 1991 and was bought from a local, independant shop. So it may be that it was an exclusive for indepedant retailers of the time.

Another exclusive Turbopower has been found. This is another of the unusual U2408 models, 1 of 4 known colour schemes. There were versions in white & blue exclusive to Argos, an unknown maroon model and this one in gloss black, exclusive to Littlewoods-Index.

This one is dated February 1990, making it exactly the same age as me

Blue & white models were exclusive to Argos
Black was exclusive to Littlewoods-Index
Maroon was exclusive to Scottish Power
