I have been looking for a long time for an Electro Hygiene model 960. My mom bought one of these back in the late 50's early 60's and I would like to have one for sentimental value. I would like it to be operational with original attachments and at least the hose coupling.

I have to say, this was a true work horse. It was my job to empty the bag as I was still small during that time. My mom did let me vacuum with it even though I was small at the time. When we built a new house, my mom bought a Westinghouse Canister and gave the Electro Hygiene to my aunt. The Westinghouse Canister was the worst vacuum we ever had.......

Thank You,
PR-21

Hi Bud, would this be the one you're looking for? If so, it is a model 966. It was made from 1953 to 1983. Don't think they ever made a 960. They also had a canister, but don't know the model number.

There was also a model 950, made from 1945 to 1952.

It is the model 950 that my Mom had....

Thanks Jeff,

It was the Model 950 my Mom had. Your picture looks just like hers. It had two black runners on the bottom and a flat and not rounded exhaust port that could also be used as a blower.

Jeff, that makes me wonder how old I really was when she bought it. I know it was from a door to door salesman or at least delivered. I was born in 1951, could they have still been selling this model? I know hers was brand new.....and she traded in our old upright Premier 21 with a broken handle.

Thanks for the information and pics. A lot of memories....I am still watching Ebay and have just been typing Electro Hygiene. Good thing since I was mixed up on the model number.

Thanks again Jeff,

Sincerely
Bud Mattingly

And yes, the 950 would have still been made when you were about a year old, and probably still sold when you were 2 or maybe even 3, as I'm sure that even after the model change they would have continued selling the 950's until they were out of them. It's also possible that they might have sold the remaining 950's at clearance prices after they began selling the 966. Electro-Hygienes were mostly sold door to door, but you could also buy one at the dealership.
One of my Aunts had a 950 when I was a kid, and I remember her cleaning with it back then. No doubt she bought it from my Uncle (her brother-in-law) when he was selling Electro-Hygienes. Another Aunt (wife of the Uncle who sold EH) had a 230 upright. She used to cut my hair when I was little and used the 230 to clean up when she was done. And a Great-Aunt (and Aunt to the other two Aunts) also had a 230 upright, and eventually traded it in for a 285 upright, which she also traded in for a 903 upright. I also sold them during my Senior year of high school and again a couple years later. So Electro-Hygiene was well represented in my family!
In my collection I have both the 950 and 966 seen in the pictures. I hope you will be able to find a 950 for your collection. Although they are harder to find than the 966 (the 950 was built for only 7 years but the 966 had a 30 year run), one does turn up on ebay now and then. Good luck,
Jeff
