I have a question for some of the Hoover experts.
I am wanting to know, when did the Turbopower Total Systems come out? I have heard from a fellow collector that the Turbomaster Total System models came out in 1986, can anyone confirm this please? I imagine the Turbopower Total Systems came out about that time, but I am thinking 1991?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I think the Turbopower Total Systems were on sale in 1990. I'm sure Currys had them.

I have a vague memory of thinking at the time, that they could use the conventional pan converter and standard tools, rather than the small on-board tools - if one wished to do so. The sole plate seemed to be the same.

For some reason, the year 1989 is calling out to me. I know it was a good while after the Turbomaster. You will see on early Turbomaster cleaners that the hole into which the wand end of the hose sits is open, whereas on later models it is closed. This is because the Turbopower cleaner used the same hose caddy but required a closed hole to sit the hose into. Rather than make two styles, Hoover simply changed the caddy to a closed hole and used the same one for all models thereafter.

Hi Alex.

My understanding is the following:

1983
U1100 and U1102 Turbo Juniors
U2194, U2196 and U2198 Turbopowers
(U1102 and U2196 were leccy board exclusives)

v early 1986 (probably just after New Year)
U1220 and U1222 Turbo Juniors
U2332, U2334 and U2336 Turbopowers
(U1222 and U2334 were leccy board exclusives and came in early and later colour schemes)
There is at least one U2332 out there dated 1985! Whether this was produced and then stored before release in 1986 - who can say for sure. I have always understood that the above series was released in 1986 and not 1985.

1987
U4362 Turbomaster SoftBag
U5078 and U5080 Turbomasters, the latter with variable power

1988
U5094, U5096 and U5120 Turbomaster Total Systems
(U5096 had variable power, with U5120 being the leccy board exclusive)

1989
U1294 and U1296 Turbo Juniors, the latter with seperate tools and slightly different colour to the U1294.
U2566 and U2568, the latter with autoflex
U2602 and U2604 Turbopower Total Systems, the latter with autoflex

1991
U2662 Turbopower Freedom
U5132 Turbomaster Freedom

By no means comprehensive, as there were many other models produced from 1989 onwards, the above are the core range models.
The other models produced were exclusives and variations produced for independent outlets.

When I have a moment, I will try and do a thread showing all the Turbopowers and masters that I have managed to get a photo of.

Hope the above helps.
Paul

I can say that from my own memory, the updated Turbopower range in 1986 was indeed available very early into the year, if not at the very end of 1985, because I recall someone my mother cleaned for getting a new Turbopower cleaner which my mother described as being 'red'. That was initially all I got from her. The lady of the house had received it as a Christmas present from the husband, a fact which my mother was most troubled over, given that she thought it was both inappropriate as a Christmas gift for a woman to receive from her spouse, and also somewhat redundant considering that my mother was the only person who ever used it. What intrigued me was that the cleaner must have been purchased just on the turn of the models, that is to say the new range was in store and on sale in the new year, yet upon further questioning my mother told me the cleaner had no automatic corwinder, which of course confirmed exactly which red cleaner it was. I just wish I could remember if the new machines were available in later 1985 or earliest 1986.

Hi guys.

I have convinced myself this evening that the 2nd Generation Turbopowers have to have been released for sale in 1985 and NOT 1986.

Two of mine and Rob's Turbo Juniors are dated mid 1985 and the costs of storing 5 to 6 months worth of production, to release them in 1986 would have been huge.

Paul, they may well have been delivered to the retail outlets and stored there, but like you I think they came to light in later parts of 1985. I remember being surprised at the 'red' cleaner I wrote about, because I was already quite aware of the autoflex model by this point. I am sure what this woman was given for Christmas was old, sale priced stock.
