Well that was fun. I just found a nifty Dirt Devil 702 at Goodwill for $15. It looked fine and tested well in the store. I did notice that it didn't easily stay locked in the upright position. No biggie, or so I thought. When I got it home and examined it more carefully, I noticed the area inside the little carrying handle on powerhead was cracked. Superglue! So I disassembled the unit, superglued the crack, waited for it to dry, then put it all back together.
Within a minute of testing it on my carpet, I heard a snap, then a loud crack, then the motor sped up and I heard pieces.
Goodbye fan.
I noticed that the superglue did not hold very well. That area gets a lot of flexing tension and ultimately I'm guessing it's a design flaw after years of getting locked and unlocked in place.
What I am wondering is -- should I bother ordering another fan? They are a little less than the whole unit cost me (well, the fan is *really* cheap, the shipping, not so much). But am I just going to end up putting it in and only have it shatter within a minute? Or do you think I put it back together wrong?
I'd hate to send it on its way to the scrap heap. I don't mind a $15 loss, but if I can get it working -- it's perfect for some small areas in my apartment.
