Canadian Electrolux Model 86

Hi Rob:

From 1957-63 Electrolux had 3 machines out the 83, 86, and 88 - all without bumpers. In 1963 (till 68) they changed to having 2 machines (with bumpers) the 86 (available with or without the cord reel) and the 88.

When the power nozzle was introduced the machines started coming with the electrical connection in the handle for it. At the same time replacement handles were available for the older 80 series models so that the salesmen could retrofit them to take the new power nozzle. It isnt classed as a distinct version as it was just a minor upgrade to the existing version. Any of the 80 series could be made to take a pn.

There are also 3 different versions of the powernozzle (PN1) for the red machines. The 1st is the one with the long white handle attached to the PN. The second has a short red elbow with a red plastic telescopic wand and cord clipped to the outside of the wand. The third has the telescopic wand with the cord built in like the green machines. The last two versions of the PN actually were out when the 89 was out. If the salesman couldnt sell a customer the 89 then they would try to sell them a PN that matched their existing 86 or 88. All three versions came with a cord that just clipped onto the existing hose. Power hoses didnt make their appearance till mid way into the 89 run.

Checkrate/Likes Here is something I literally stumbed upon back in June....my Electrolux 86 Version 3, with the PN receptacle! I had called around to a few vac shops, hoping to find a switch & PN receptacle to convert my 86 Version 2 to a Version 3 with the PN receptacle....and low and behold, he had the ENTIRE VACUUM! I was absolutely shocked when he told me he just got it as a trade-in, & just about ready to jump for joy. This was one of my "dream machines" I had been hoping to find someday....and now I have one! The hose is a brand-new genuine Aerus AP series hose that has a hose connector & pigtail from a Lux 89 transplanted onto it. I used a Dirt Devil Can Vac powerhead with it while I had it out, as I liked that it had the on/off switch built in, plus the narrow width brushroll cavity concentrated the airflow really good & made it clean better. It's amazing how powerful this vacuum is, yet how quiet it is too! It cost me dearly though....$145 including taxes & shipping....but oh well it was worth it.

Checkrate/Likes Looks good - but there were only two versions of the 86 - The 1957-63 version without the bumpers (white suction end) and the 1963-68 version with the bumpers (red suction end). The second version was available with either a halo for the cord to wrap around or, for $30 more, the cord reel. In effect, by doing this, it took the place of both the previous model 83 and model 86. If you take a look at your serial number the first digit will tell you what year your was made (eg a 5 would mean 1965.) Doug

Checkrate/Likes *Doug:* Ok, question for you then. For the Version 2 that's straight suction, was the PN receptacle offered as an upgrade along with a new hose/wand/PN-1 when the 88 came out, so customers wouldn't have to buy a new vacuum if they just wanted the powerhead? It was my understanding that the 2nd 86 came in 2 versions, straight suction with the red suction end & bumpers, & 2nd version with red suction end, bumpers & PN receptacle built into the handle. So do tell.... Rob

Checkrate/Likes Before you buy an electric hose, make sure your cleaner has a power-nozzle socket! We saved a man gifting his son a Hoover canister from buying a power-nozzle, he didn't know his machine didn't have an outlet!
