I looked at one of these at Target last night, and without using it, it looks very impressive. Extremely lightweight, large bag and a stiff brush roll. Apparently it has been the given the GOLD award in cleaning ability by the CRI. Some people online just despise it, and some love it. It's made in China, but it sure is interesting. What do you guys think of it?

Looks very bizarre. I think it looks ugly.

New Oreck

I am more and more of the opinion that if it looks like something your grandmother would recognise from long ago it will be capable of cleaning a house. If it "looks bizarre"as above-BEWARE!Has anyone had real life experience yet?

I also saw one at target this week, and I also thought it looked interesting. Probably not something I would buy, but interesting. I'll wait a few years and they will probably start popping up at garage sales and goodwill. Would I spend $200 on a new one? Probably not. Would I drop $5-10 on one at a garage sale? Most likely.

I really like Orecks, but this one is just weird looking to me. Kind of got a grasshopper thing going on. I'm not sure I could warm up to it.

The handle looks a little awkward to use in my opinion, but Im sure you could get used to it.

Daniel :-)

That's gonna hurt the Oreck Stores...

Having their latest models in department stores is really gonna hurt their Branch stores.

This means...

the Magnesium is likely slated for deletion. Many purchasers of the Magnesium have exchanged it for the Forever Gold.

I would guess that many of these units in Target are refurbished returns

The odd design is to keep the weight down. I believe the Magnesium is the lightest Oreck ever.

Dan wrote up a comprehensive review of this machine when it was first released. I do not think it is being discontinued as it is still featured on the web site. If someone has a store close by - be great to see if the retail stores are still stocking them.

We (three stores) are Oreck dealers..

The Magnesium is not as popular with dealers or with customers as the other machines like the Platinum and the Gold. It neither looks nor feels substantial, and it weighs a mere two pounds less than the gold.  Oreck would not dare put the Gold or the Pilot, or the Platinum in Target, or they would have no dealers left.  I think Oreck has a huge overstock of the Magnesium because dealers are not buying them. Instead of lowering the dealer's cost so he could sell them and make something on them, they take them to Target. The dealer cost is about $260.00  We gave them a new nickname today "Whoreick"  Not the way to make your  dealers happy, especially when all those XL21's are out there needing their annual tune-ups, just sayin'.

I've used, and bought the magnesium. It's a great, great deep cleaner. It pulled my area rugs up off the floor. Very impressive. Built quality is ok. The handle feels really flimsy. But I'd highly recommend it.

I bought and

returned it . It had very poor suction and was made very cheap in CHINA . All other Orecks made and sold today are way better don`t waste your money on Orecks biggest mistake .

Oreck had the opportunity to fill orders from Target and Costco for the Magnesium, and yes, they have become "Whorecks"...love that nickname Trebor. We have seven stores in my area and have sold quite a few, but all of us try to be quite selective when demoing/selling. The Forever Gold is my personal favorite, but if it's an older person, or a single in a one bedroom condo, the Magnesium will work for them. Another scenario is if they have frieze carpet, works really well and was designed to answer frieze issues with the other models. Every vacuum has a niche for individual situations, and I feel for the family who picks one up from a big box store, especially if they have kids and pets and expect it to work wonders. Guess when they break down, they'll THEN find the Oreck store to do the warranty work, ugh. There's another model coming out soon that has the switch in the handle and a swivel fan housing like the Pilot. There are no refurb Magnesiums available anywhere to our district manager's knowledge. One thing about Oreck, when it's a refurb, it's clearly stated on the manufacturing label. We only keep three or four Magnesiums in stock per store, and order weekly anyway if we need more, but the Gold is our biggest seller. I just hope we keep the models made in Tennessee, my biggest fear is being bought out by an overseas company and lose the manufacturing plant here, and the same thing happen to us that happened to Hoovers once TTI took over. I shudder at the thought.
