Great job on the bright work, Derek. What a remarkable difference between the before and after photos. I know some folks on this blog don't find Kirby vacuums to be the most practical to use, but there's no denying that they’re pretty to look at when all polished up. Thanks for sharing. By the way, I wonder if Hope might have some original black wheels. Considering the number of years she spent working on Kirby’s, it’s worth the trouble to ask.

Congrats!

That will be the pinnacle of your Kirby collection, a beautiful specimen. You truly have a talent for restorations, and must have the patience of a saint! You should enter this into the best restoration category at the Milwaukee convention if you have the opportunity to come.

Thanks to all for the kind words! One thought. Would you paint the wooden portion of the handle or leave it with the wear for character???

Thoughts?

Hi, The early version of the Kirby model C didn't have the headlight.
Hence why your don't have one Evan:o)

Derek I would paint the handle myself. But it depends what kind of finish you want for it:o)

Bravo to you Derek on your 1C Kirby rebuild. L@@ks GREAT.

Derek

Perhaps a spray of black satin paint for the handel and cord hooks & then a wash & black dye job on the bag with a little fabric paint touch up on the bags red and gold stenceling?

Its still all original parts.

Belt Lifter

How do you turn it, with brute strength?
Seems like you would get blisters doing so.

That is a really nice looking vacuum, a ton of work, well done!

@ Brian -- the 1C didn't have a belt lifter.  The cap simply provides access in order to lift the belt onto the pulley.  Kirby didn't introduce the "magic finger" (belt lifter) until the 505.  In fact, the early 505s did not have a belt lifter.  It was a late production item with the 505.

@ Derek, I would paint the handle.  But that's me.  My goal is always to make it look as new as possible.  But no matter what you do, it will still look amazing.  I know you're really proud!

Post# 197813 , Reply# 24   8/28/2012 at 17:46 (4,250 days old) by vacumaniac ()

The Gamble.... Well I decided to paint the handle and cleanse the bag. Do not fret! I had reservatiosn about this but a very good friend of mine has a wife who owns a vintage clothing shop. She has a special process for cleaning fragile/delicate items. I was leery about the whole ordeal, especially with water getting into the cracks of the screen print, but she assured me that similar types of items have been done before this way, and it works great.

Well..... I think the risk paid off. What do you all think????

Unfortunately, when I removed the black topper for the bag, it literally broke into pieces!!!!!

Have to keep my eye out for another, although they are hard to find...

Still worth it to have the bag looking much better!

Now that's one STUNNING Kirby.

Derek,

all I can say is its STUNNING and really has some bling now.

You've truly preserved a by gone era, of a beautifully piece of machinery.

Some side views...

Also, does anyone know what type of bulb (wattage and size) to use in this? The standard bulbs that Kirby stocks for the older models is too long...

your restoreation is stunning. The one I had was in great shape, just never got the time to bring it back to it's org. beauty !
Glad you took the time and patience to give it new life. Just like a Factory
rebuilt !
Plus it is still very useable on todays carpets and hard surfaces, with height adjustment !

Kirby 1C Restoration

The bag is amazing looking. I saw one on ebay a month ago, unused, stored in plastic bag for all these years. The opening bid was $999.99! Actually, yours look almost as good! Can't imagine what yours is worth.
I have eleven of them and probably could not bring myself to sell any of them!
Thanks!

Light bulb

Derek,

Try ace Hardware for a bulb. I usually find the bulbs I need there for my vintage machines.

Your other option would be a lighting store.

Derek. Your Kirby Bag NOS on eBay

Hey Derek,

I was just surfing eBay 9/3/12 10am.

A seller is auctioning a BRAND NEW NOS Kirby bag that matches the bag on your machine

Item # 180965834604 Seller under the name of Kittywitty.

Take a look.

Post# 198909 , Reply# 40   9/3/2012 at 12:58 (4,244 days old) by vac-o-matic (Saint Louis, Mo.)

I know some will gasp with horror, but I would spray paint that bag topper. I had the same situation with mine. Your bag turned out awesome, she could probably make some money just cleaning vintage bags. I'm glad you didn't lose the graphics.

Post# 198957 , Reply# 41   9/3/2012 at 16:55 (4,244 days old) by vacumaniac ()

Wow. That bag on Ebay will go for quite a bit I am sure. Just imagine, somewhere these are still some of these hiding, and no one even knows!

I wonder if Frank and Mike on American Pickers ever come across stuff like this, and thining that it was worthless, just passed it by.

I have went back and forth on whether I should put the 1C on Ebay.... Still unsure...

At any riate I did get a new emtor gasket so it fits snug now and the lightbulb shines ones again!!!

Post# 198987 , Reply# 43   9/3/2012 at 19:30 (4,244 days old) by vacumaniac ()

It was machine buffed. Though I have had very good results with Mothers Mag/Aluminum polish and lint free cloths

Your C1 is going to auction?

Well Derek, I'm surprised your even thinking about selling the C1 Kirby after all the time and effort you've put into it.

Please do let us all know when it goes up for auction or sale. I'll sure be bidding on it.

I'd be bidding on the bag on eBay. However, I don't have a Kirby it would look as good on as it does on your C1.

The C1 is on eBay? WHERE???

I was just on eBay and didn't see the C1 anywhere. Didn't show up under just Kirby vintage or antique vacuum cleaners.

What't the listing item number?

Thanks.

I found it.

Ok Derek, I found your C1 on eBay.

I'm the one who has the bid of $405.00 on your machine. However, It hasn't met your reserve as price as yet.

BTW, did anyone see the final sale price on the vintage Kirby bag on Ebay, like the one on Derik's C1.The bag sold for over $550.00 I do hope the new owner frames it, as opposed to sucken up dirt in it considering the cost.

Can't wait to see what the C1 hits bidding wise. I'm watchin it.

what is your reserve? just curiouse.

Post# 200246 , Reply# 52   9/10/2012 at 21:10 (4,237 days old) by vacumaniac ()

kirbykid....

The reserve is what I feel is a very fair price... both for me and the buyer... it is a bit higher than where it is currently, but not out of sight
