Hi!
I found this vacuum today. There are some problems like back wheels are broken/missing and it sounds funny. It doesn´t run smoothly. The dust bag was overloaded as you can see=) Maybe the motor will broke up but it doesn´t smell burned yet. I opened it but I could not open the motor because one screw was so tight, maybe there is some crap inside the fan who knows. I put a new cord in this because someone was cut off the original.

Best Regards
Markus

Backward Motor

The backward motor was also fitted to the Mid-Eighties Hoover "Powerglide", which was basically a "Freedom" with a little cheapening. Probably the same could be said of the slightly later "Spirit" model.

The backward motor might have been to improve reliability: cool air gets to the carbon brushes first, then the air heats up as it encounters the windings, and then gets drawn through the metal fans.

I like the way that Hoover could keep trusted, reliable technology under the bonnet, yet alter the cosmetic appeal of the product.

Yes I have seen a bag as full as that, on my Grandfather's Miele cylinder when I changed the bag for him last year.

Hey Markus
Congratulations on a great find, any Freedom with that style of on /off switch (catch for self winding flex is in a matching position on the other side) is REALLY, REALLY rare - and for a trash find yours looks in good cosmetic condition, even if the bag was stuffed full.

The other motor which famously sported a backwads motor was the Nilfisk gd & gs machines

The backwards motor has some bennifits over conventional motors in that they run cooler and there for last longer

On a convertional Through flow motor like those found in most canister vacuum's the air is sucked through the fan system and the blown over the motor to cool the motor off.

However there is a lot of friction created when a fan such as the ones in canister vacuums pumps air through it heating up the air significantly. ( if you have ever felt the blower port air on your single fan shopvac you will know how warm the air can get and that is just one fan spinning at a fairly low RPM.) Mots canisters of years gon by had twin fan system and this meant the air was hot already when it came to cooling the motor.

Whit this and the Nilfisk design the cool air is first sucked over the motor keeping it cooler before entering the turbines and getting hot from friction. The only down side of this was that the fans on these motors had top be made of thicker aluminium as they could warp from the heat of the motor over time
