The other motor which famously sported a backwads motor was the Nilfisk gd & gs machines
The backwards motor has some bennifits over conventional motors in that they run cooler and there for last longer On a convertional Through flow motor like those found in most canister vacuum's the air is sucked through the fan system and the blown over the motor to cool the motor off. However there is a lot of friction created when a fan such as the ones in canister vacuums pumps air through it heating up the air significantly. ( if you have ever felt the blower port air on your single fan shopvac you will know how warm the air can get and that is just one fan spinning at a fairly low RPM.) Mots canisters of years gon by had twin fan system and this meant the air was hot already when it came to cooling the motor. Whit this and the Nilfisk design the cool air is first sucked over the motor keeping it cooler before entering the turbines and getting hot from friction. The only down side of this was that the fans on these motors had top be made of thicker aluminium as they could warp from the heat of the motor over time |
