Been working on this one today. I first owned it in about 2004 but quickly sold it on after discovering it sounded horrific when I powered it up. Sold it to ric and it remained unopened in the same box I sold it in until about 3 months ago when I got it back from him. Took it apart today and not only was the motor seized but the motor compartment was stuffed full of rubbish. Cleaned it up, greased the bearings and now it runs lovely!

It was Electrolux's cheapest cylinder in the early 80's, it's basic but quite powerful and quiet

Those are nice little cleaners - powerful and surprisingly light.

This is my version

I love the slimlines. So powerful to say they're only small and the bags hold a decent amount. Here is my Slimeline 154 from 1988.

These look like great Vacuum Cleaners! Much more basic than my Tango Z5001.

Although Electrolux had always made basic cleaners with lower wattages, these were the first to have a smaller motor in them. I don't know why, but as Ryry found, the motor casing was always crammed full of rubbish which had escaped the bags and the filters. This made the motor very noisey as the fans were always full of rubbish too. You can easily put an Electrolux 500 motor in one of these, but it isn't as powerful.

It also never ceases to interest me as to how so many vacuum cleaners of all makes still have the silent salesman sticker attached to it, after decades of use.

Post# 189411 , Reply# 7   7/10/2012 at 19:55 (4,306 days old) by ryry_87 (Earth)

all the ones i've ever used have been bloody noisy, however now I've cleaned this one out and got the crap out of the fans and washed the little exhaust filters which were extremely clogged, it runs very quietly. It sounds a lot like the bigger 350/350E models which I always thought were quiet. The motor is an odd one, it has a shaft for a belt and looks identical to a 500 motor. Could never work out why they put these in a cylinder? or didn't put them in a 500. A 700w 500 would have been amazing at the time.

These are essential as basic as it gets. It's basically a motor and a box but I must admit, the Slimline is a damn sight better than the equivalent Hoover Spirit of the time. When I moved out of my mums into a 3-bed house, I had an old Spirit for a while and it was awful. Ever tried vacuuming a 3 bedroom house with thick 80s carpets with a Spirit screaming away?! it took forever, the tools were horrible. Oooooh 650w of power too!

This thread reminded me of this brochure that my aunt and uncle sent me years ago so I dug it out and scanned it.

Ryry the reason the motor has a pully is because it used an existing design of motor, the 500 style from the upright range. This motor was of course much smaller and leaving the pulley on meant the motor did not need to be adapted. I suppose that the upright cleaners did not go above 560 watts because for upright cleaning the power was not needed. You are right that the Slimline Electrolux was far better than the Hoover Spirit, but the Spirit was a later cleaner and appeared a good few years after the Slimline started, although towards the end of the 1980's they were on sale together. It's predecessor, the Hoover Powerglide, was very much on a level playing field with the Electrolux Slimline.

I love that brochure thanks for posting that one, I've never seen a 180 before. I used to have a 185E which was almost the same but with variable power. That was a great little vacuum.

I did have a another 160 back in 2008 and I managed to put a 1100w Contour motor in it, that was pretty powerful. I suppose the fact that they use upright motors means you can give them a little power boost lol

Hey Ryan:

I have another brochure for them too. Its exactly the same flyer but with a brown background instead of red. Dont know what the idea behind that was but it really didnt serve a purpose.

"designed to make life easier for the busy housewife" They wouldn't get away with saying that these days I bet. Not that I don't agree with it, but still.

Maybe I didn't make my last statement clear enough - the reason they wouldn't get away with that these days is because women these days for some reason don't want to be housewives and want to work all the time so they can be "even" with men.

The reason Electrolux would not get away with that Ad campaign now is it is out and out sexist!

I also think that the average family needs both parents to work to make ends meet in this economic climate.

Collector 2, thanks for posting the brochure, as I have said before I did own a 410 briefly and thought it was a great wee cleaner.

While that is true Paul, I know a lot of people who feel they are better keeping the house nice and bringing up kids than passing them off to child minders all the time so they can work.

There are a lot of variables so I can't really judge on any aspect of it.

All the working Mum's I know would give their eye teeth to stay at home with the kids, it's just a sad fact that they can not afford to. Having said that Edinburgh is the second most expensive ( but most desirable ) place to live in the UK. I for one could not afford to live on my own and most of my single friends flat share.......anyway, apologies Ry for going way off topic!

Ry, are you keeping the 160? Will you be able to get the tools off E-bay?

God, you have me at it now.

Well in that case do not post statments that will cause offence - to men and women alike. I can hardly believe I read such a thing in 2012! Yes, some women (and a lot of men come to that) work out of economic necessity and some women work for the intellectual stimulation that a job or career can bring - something they are ENTIRELY justified in doing.

I'll take my warning officer! :)

On the subject of Electroluxes I used my Tango today on "Eco" mode (650W) and it works great. The motor really doesn't need to be 1400W.

good good.

Tbh i find with a lot of cylinders that if they're overpowered, they don't tend to do a particularly good job on carpets because the floor tool sticks. My Kerstar is only 700w and it performs great on carpets with a regular Numatic floortool

"Tbh i find with a lot of cylinders that if they're overpowered, they don't tend to do a particularly good job on carpets because the floor tool sticks." That is very true.

With a brand new bag and clean filters my '08 JMB SC1056 1400W sticks to the floor like glue. No variable power so I just have to put up with it until the bag starts to fill slightly and the suction drops.

If I put the Tango on the carpet setting (750W) with an empty bag it is just the same, yet on the Economy setting with 100W less it is perfect.

I think 1000w-1200w is about right for a cylinder generally

Ryry, despite the lower model number, the 154 was one of the newest slimines. It was an exclusive line available in several colour schemes, all with plastic tools. There was a 174 as well, same colour as yours there. That one in blue belonging to Turbo500 was available as a 154. I would be interested to know what the model of that one is.

the brown 154

my mum had the brown 154 after my nans junior 1012 gave up the ghost and the two of the turbos died (my mum is very good at killing vacuums) it was a good vacuum and powerfull as well, mum hated the flip over tool that came with it so for a while she used the two way dusting brush on the upholstery side to clean the carpets, because it had the little rubber inserts it used to pick up the dog hairs quite well, she then went and bought a new floor tool the same as was on the vax121, when that died she bought the 1185 slimline electronic this was a light blue with cord rewind bag full indicator and variable power from 250w to 800w the hose end and extensions were better on this one as they were longer and the clip for the two way dusting brush on the back of the handle, but once again she hated the flip over floor tool so she bought anothe black one then that only lasted a year before it gave up and she went back to the the hoover turbo's ic ould understand them dieing if she didnt look after them but she always changed bags and filters oh well when she bought a kirby that only lasted 18 months lol

What I don't undertand is...

how people on this forum can be so ready to jump down someone's throat for making the most innocuous of statements simply based on personal experience and personal opinion, when no one is being judged or called names? Some people here, it would appear,  are in serious need of medication. I think some are looking to pick fights because they can say things here they would not have the bollocks to say within arm's length.  This is not a grammar school playground. Not everything that makes one bristle was said with that intent in mind.  Just get over it, already.

cheers for the comment on the Powerplus, sadly it belongs to ric Gooch and I had to (reluctantly) give it back. It really was a fantastic cleaner that performs really well. It was one of the most powerful Seniors i'd used

Yes... though how P&G have managed to get away with a "Knight in Shinning Armour," cleaning a palace head to toe in Cif liquid and then transforming into a single woman cleaning, is beyond me - advert 2012!

Ultimately, does it really matter though who does what in life? As this thread has highlighted, one can be offended by anything if one looks for something to be offended by. For every woman who may be offended by the advert you mention Sebofan, there is probably a man who thinks it is still appropriate. Heaven knows I know a good deal of women of a generation who might think it is appropriate. Sometimes I think that people think too hard about things.

Well, if it wasn't for the internet that brings videos, information, research etc, I don't think many people would think as much. We'd all be back at our local Hoover shop spending a fortune on consumables and not really thinking if we could source a different way that would be cheaper at cost.
