On THursdays, I teach in Philly. AS I was going home, I was in the 'burbs', Lansdale, to be exact, I drove through a rather posh area to get to the highway. I saw what I KNEW was a HOOVER, (I'd know that handle anywhere). There was a BEAUTIFUL Lavander model 33 Convertible Special. THe cord is intact, the bag was as supple as it was new. A few scratches on the base. It's better than the one I already have! A thorough cleaning and a new belt and we're ready to go! Pics soon.

Must have been your luck day! Chad found a 33 for me, the bag that is currently on it is from a 69. Talk about a weird color combo. Who in their right mind would have thrown that out?

I can't wait either! The well-off and wealthy are often either clueless or so loaded with funds that they can chuck flawless items with minor problems to the curb with no qualms. After all, in most of their minds, if it's old, it's trash. Glad you saved that baby, John!

I beg to differ

my family are all well off , those evil rich folks who give all the people jobs .

We all buy quality and keep our stuff for years we dont throw stuff out for the

newest fad . My mother still uses her Hoover convertible 1966 model 35 her Electrolux

Super J and her Electrolux Discovery II . Still drives her 1994 Mercedes E320 and

my father drives his 1995 S500 . The thing you don`t seem to understand its the

old money that keeps the old stuff for ever and it`s the new money who throw out

for the newest fads .The Old money mother probably gave her new money Daughter the

Hoover John found but threw it out for a plastic Dyson Fad must have .

I Agree with Dan,

there is a vas difference between old money and new money.

Old money tends to keep things were as the new money has to have the latest and greatest.

It all depends on the individuals, I think.

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
I know "Old Money' that keeps things, (they always bought good things). By keeping good stuff, that's how they 'got' rich. I know some"Nuveo Riche" as well. THey are very disposable.(some).
We were not affluent at all, (still). I appreciate everything I have because I know how hard it was to get it. I tend to try to buy 'quality', as it lasts longer and works better.
Anyway, here's the vacuum, after just a quick 'rub'.

the bag is perfectly soft. Even the handle has no scratches

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
I hate when people 'flip over the cleaner' to change the belt, etc, and scratch the handle. This was a later one as the switch is white, not red. Wouldn't it have been a shame to see this go into a garbage truck?

What a find! I had two 33's that I merged into one, but have yet to find that elusive lavender bag. It found the right home, I'd say.

very nice . My neighbor in East Norriton Pa. used to have that and the pink one

they stored them in their garage . I always wanted them but they would not let

them go (old money) . Their daughter lives in Landsdale and that would be really

cool if Mrs. Sands gave it to Jody and she threw it out . Well who ever owned it

now its in great hands for ever . ENJOY !

Nice!

hooverboy81's profile picture
That is gorgeous! That is one Hoover that is on my list! I love that lavender color!

As for "old money" vs. "new money" I feel that is a rather gauche stereotype. I think it has more to do with those who appreciate quality, rather than the newest, latest trends. Additionally, I have found over the years that those with "new money" are the ones who are most likely to discuss such topics constantly, and are obsessed with brands, labels, "one upping" the neighbors, and brand "name dropping". Those with "old" or "family" money are usually much more reserved in the way they speak of money and finances, and don't flaunt things as they are merely possesions. My mother has said for as long as I can remember, if you are a walking, breathing, speaking advertisement for a particular brand it is most likely due to over compensation, and the creation of an illusion of grandeur. Coming from a family that has done quite well for themselves, going back five generations, I was taught that it wasn't appropriate to discuss such matters relating to affluence, as it is not a relevant topic of conversation.

Back on topic, John that Hoover is in amazing shape! I hope I have the opportunity to come across a 33 one of these days! I love a good hunt, and restoration! I am envious of your collection of Hoovers! Beautiful!

What a fabulous find, John

papasvacs's profile picture

It really looks great.

My previous post was removed by me.  It was similar to hooverboy81's post as well as thoughts that John echoed.

I think that retaining and maintaining items of quality has more to do with the individual than "new money" or "old money".  I don't like to "paint with a broad brush".  People, across the board, either take care of things or they do not.  I certainly was not brought up in a monied lifestyle and yet we took good care of what we had.  I still try to buy quality and care for it well.

That being said, I removed my post because I was afraid that it might offend someone.  I have seen so many people of late being offended and offending others.  I find it distressing and did not want to be a party to it.

Hope no one is offended by my thoughts as I try to take no offense at what others say.  I enjoy the back-and-forth of this forum.

Great Hoover!  Terrific luck to find such a "sweet" machine.  Wish I had such luck. John!

Enjoy to the fullest!  Savor the last hours of spring and look forward to a terrific summer.

Greg F.

Greg,

The wording of your post is excellent. I couldn't agree more. This forum is about vintage vacuums, not finances. Commentary on, and "bragging" of financial status is generally in very poor taste. I thought that was common knowledge.

What year(s) was the Hoover 33 Convertible produced? I've seen several in other's collections, yet never knew much about the machine itself! I am guessing from the size of the Hoover badge it is early 60's? Am I on the right track, or way off?

The one up in the future "gallery" isn't as nice. It was sheer luck to find this, as I never drive through that area, as a rule. It was a beautiful, clear evening, not dark yet. I planned to take a shortcut, get a Coke, open the moonroof, get on the turnpike, set the car on cruise control, and zip on home. (Aren't I WILD)?
This vleaner is also refered to as "The Agnes Moorehead HOOVER". Lavander was her favorite color. HOOVER made this for her, as she was close friends with the HOOVERS.
This cleaner sounds great. It needed a new belt. The house out of which it came is newer than the vacuum. I believe this was 1963. Those houses were 1970s. Someone either is moving, or, got some new cheap plastic thing. I always believe in sharing as much as I can. Even when I acquire a nice item, I like to show, not brag. We all have choce pieces, isn't it nice to "present them"?

I had heard the Agnes Moorehead story before but wasn't sure if it was true, or just an urban HOOVER legend. Those are my thoughts as well as to why such an awesome Hoover ended up in the trash, not "old or new money" LOL! SO glad you drove by and spotted it! Sometimes the best Hoovers are curb finds, and that's what makes the restoration even more rewarding! It's fun to bring an old Hoover "back to life"! Alwyays love seeing pics of your collection!

Fortunate find and looks good. An intelligent person with life experience will look after and maintain what they have not only to make it last but to honor the hard work and personal sacrifice to purchase an item and protect the investment. Their loss is your gain.

Sorry to have insulted you Kirbyloverdan, I said the well-off and wealthy are OFTEN, NOT ALWAYS, I DO actually know that there are many people with money who treat their homes and possessions like they should. We have people here with money who are not as educated and sensible as your family. There was a kitchen redo in the wealthy section of Port St. Lucie, of a Four Year Old Kitchen, the owner demanded it all go to the dump, NO salvage, PERIOD.

insulted , It`s just that nowadays everyone seem`s to be beating up on the Rich

and well to do . Most of them have worked all their lives very hard starting with

nothing and now have all they could ever have dreamed possible . If it wasn`t for

To me there is nothing better than the American Dream and of course Vacuum`s .

Hoover 33

This was one I thought I would never find in good, complete condition. And when I did I had to pay one hundred pennies more than above!I went to an auction house on the weekly estate auction day and there it was.Waited untill they asked who wants what item put up from row 3.Bid $1.00 and was not outbid!--Jon,Probably have at least 1 duplicate, not sure condition or bag. Will look if interested.--Old Money,New Money AND Generation Gap--Part of above comments may also relate to a 'generation gap'.I saw an example recently when an older lady brought in a gray(1982)Elux B-8 for a simple problem.I made the comment "That is the best ever shampoo/polisher".Her grown daughter standing behind looked down her nose at it and said"It IS ?!?!"So if you drive by her house when the day comes for the daughter to make room in the closets for more Chinese WalMart merchandise you may get a very nice B-8.

@Dan, no one is "beating up on the rich". As aforementioned in my earlier post, which was also echoed by Greg, the discussion of money and "affluence" is in rather poor taste. So why not drop the subject?

Turn it over, and, you'll see the model number clearly written. They were very popular, not MY favorite style hood. Front load tools go on this high performance motor unit.

Acrolect

That Custom Convertible is gorgeous! I have a very similar model, but the outer bag on mine is a gradient stripe pattern (similar to the Decade 80) rather than a floral pattern.

John, congratulations on finding your model 33! A neighbor of mine had one years ago with a red power switch, making for a striking color combination with the lavender and white. The Hoover gods have smiled on you once again with yet another Hoover to grace your already impressive collection!

BTW, here's a picture of my U4423...

Another Hoover Model 33

Just thought I would tack on to this interesting post. I just picked up a Model 33, it works great. It didn't look like this when I got it though, it was an estate sale find.

It has been a hit with the family and is now a daily driver. I kinda like the others I have since they have the head light, but the family doesn't seem to use those as much. Lots of comments about the color combination. I put a new belt on and bag of course. Thanks for looking.
