Inspired by all these threads I've seen lately, I'm jumping into the fray. Post all the Royal and Dirt Devil pictures that you have (I prefer that the pictures be of 1995 or older models).

First up: the Stark Deluxe 5000NA, the greyscale version (grey Scafitex bag, and black trim overall) of the burgundy-trimmed Royal 889 (1987-88)/9000 (1988-90).

1985 Royal 618 Wide Track

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
From the collection of Joe22. This is the very first wide-track metal upright Royal ever made, introduced in 1984.

Model 620 is similar, but it also has a (cast) headlight.

The 618's Replacement

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
The Model 680 (1987-1990) wide track. Shown on it is a light blue Scafitex bag from a (pre-1991) model 886/887.

Model 682 is similar but has the cast headlight (as had its predecessor, the 620).

Unfortunately I currently don't have scanning capabilities or I could post pics here of some of my acquisitions from last summer. I did try to copy & paste some of the pics I had posted before my old computer crashed, but that didn't work either. Otherwise I would have plenty of pics for this thread, and the vintage Hoover thread as well.

1990 Royal 9700 Classic

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
Has partially-obscured front decal (it's obscured in the place where the Adjust-O-Rite is). The same decal was used on models 8000, 9000, 9005, 9089 and 9100. This decal version lasted through March 1991.

1988 Royal 9000 - White Cord

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
Along with models 992 and 993, the 9000 also featured the then-new Au-Toe-Matic toe-touch adjuster, and initially had the white cord.

Close-Up View of the 903's Replacement

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
The 889 - produced from 1987-1988. Original bag was mauve in color (see picture of the 9000 above).

The Caution decal (applied below the Adjust-O-Rite and above the Royal decal) was short-lived, since it was only used on models produced during the 1st quarter of 1988 (the same text would encircle the bottom half of the Adjust-O-Rite plug from April 1988 onward).

1971 Electro-Hygiene 890

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
Can't leave the Electro-Hygiene crowd in the dust here, so I am posting away pictures of those models.

This 890 was produced in March 1971, and believed to be one of the last with the tan bag (the cotton-twill version; the red vinyl bag would replace the one seen here shortly after this serial # of 17C-H-15940).

Another tan bag would return in mid-1982, but it's the same diamondback vinyl fabric as the red one.

1980 Electro-Hygiene 285

Originally introduced in 1955 to replace the 230, this 285 dates from a quarter-century following its original introduction. This example is dated August 1980.

The 980 was the Electro-Hygiene version of the Royal 888, as it had a removable nozzle.

Royal 6005 - Preferred Collection

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
Royal 6005 Preferred Collection, with Adjust-O-Rite and Rite-Hite.

Model 6805 is similar but has rubber plate rather than Adjust-O-Rite and the Au-Toe-Matic toe-touch adjuster rather than the Rite-Hite knob.

Model 993

Found this one in someone's trash a few years ago. A little cleaning, a new belt and it works fine.

Power Tank model 4500

Ebay purchase. This machine was full of sawdust because someone used it with an ill-fitting paper bag and no cloth bag. I got the necessary parts from Mike Rogers, and I think it cleaned up pretty well.

The PN does a great job grooming the carpet, but it doesn't clean within about 1.5" of either edge -- kind of annoying.

Your 993 appears to be a 1988 model since it has the white pigtail cord on it. I may be wrong, but didn't all 992s and 993s have the white cord throughout their entire production (1988-1990)?

Even the burgundy-trim 9000 Preferred Collection series upright had the white pigtail cord at first.

993 Cord color

Ben -

When I talked with Mike R. (and this was a few years ago), I believe he said that the 993 had a blue cord later in its production.

Bill (wwh),

That would have been the 1989-90 production season. Here is one, from then, with the blue cord. Serial #E89C007771 (May 1989).

Franken-Royal

kirbyclassiciii's profile picture
Now this is one "Franken-Royal": it has the removable nozzle from the 980 (note different pull knob for the Adjust-O-Rite plate), but the motor body is from some other Royal that dates between 1986-90 (probably model 886 or 887), since it has the warning text all in black (and also because the fan case housing is from at least January 1985 due to it being partially angled).

The bag is off of a 1982-83 Electro-Hygiene 903 or 980 since it is the off-white colored version with the red text.

And to add

Had to add to this one I did not see a model 153 in fact I rarely see any. GreAt machine once I get a new bag on for it she will see daily service. Would be nice to have a light like the 215 but then it would not be a 153.

Ok....this strikes up a qestion from me.....

i have a aunt that bought a new (or maybe not now) Royal around 1996 or 1997. it looked just like the 993 in the same dark blue with the same bag patch....but it couldn't have been now seeing Ben E dates for it manufacture.....was there one that was VERY similar to it, or even identical? i know also that hers took F&G bags, and was a low 5.0 or 6.0 amper....it was not a screamer.....

Jae,

I believe your aunt had a model 886 or 886F (the latter with the "Au-Toe-Matic" toe-touch height adjuster) from the 1991 to 1995 period (pre-1991 models would have a "baby blue" trim color similar to the 880), with the 6 amp motor.

Or, if it lacked the headlight, it would be a model 885 (1989 and early 1990 models have the 6-blade fan; models made since April 1990 have the 9-blade fan).

When this thread was first started I wasn't able to scan the pics of my acquisitions from 2 years ago, but since have them all scanned and saved to my flash drive. First we have a Royal 189 and two 215's. I no longer have the one in the center.

A Row Of Royals!

hygiene903's profile picture
Left to right, they are models 601, 801, 603, 606, 801, 602, and 883. Interesting to note, the 601 is the ONLY Royal in my collection that says Royal Vacuum Cleaner Co. on the data plate. All others either say P.A. Geier Co. or Royal Appliance Mfg. Co. Also, the bag on the 601 was originally red and black, but is quite faded.

Straight Suction Electro-Hygienes

hygiene903's profile picture
Left to right are model 94 (pre-war), 230, and 2-230, both post-war. The 2-230 was the last straight suction Electro-Hygiene, replaced by the revolving brush model 285.

Here's A Few More That Weren't Part of the 2011 Acqu

hygiene903's profile picture
First is a model 80 Electro-Hygiene. This was the first Electro-Hygiene model, built from 1934 until it was replaced in the late 30's or early 40's with the 94. Note the inline switch on the cord. There was NO switch on the handle, or any place cut out for one. This was my first restoration project.

Electro-Hygiene 950 Tank

hygiene903's profile picture
This one was built from 1945 to 1952, when it was replaced by the 966. One of my Aunts had one of these when I was little. I would love to find a proper set of wands, hose, and rug nozzle for it. The hose would be similar to the one for my 2-230, except that it would have had a connector on the machine end instead of cuffs on both ends.

Electro-Hygiene 966 Tank

hygiene903's profile picture
One of two that I have, this one came from an estate sale several years ago. Unfortunately the only attachments they had were what you see here. I usually use the ones from my other 966 with it. The 966 had a long run (30 years), and from the low serial number I'm thinking this one was from the first or second year of production.

Model 903 Electro-Hygiene

hygiene903's profile picture
This was the first 903 I got for my collection and is also the newest of the 3, built in 1983. The 903 was the current model when I was selling EH, and had a run of over 20 years. Here she is with attachments and extra accessories kit.

Made in the early 60's, it was similar to the Royal 901. The tool caddy and instruction book are all I need to make it complete.
