This is a discussion thread for all things Royal metal uprights, canisters and hand vacuums made 1980 and earlier.
Bag variations will vary with each decade, so a general listing of bags and trim details will be provided in short: Circa 1933-Circa 1948 = Red and black bag with gold ROYAL letters and crown logo. 1948-1957 = "Lady bug" scheme with black half on left side and red half on right side, with red embroidered R-O-Y-A-L letters on the black half, and the crown logo on the right half (red). This also carries over to the Adjust-O-Rite used on various top-dollar models. Most trim is black. 1958-1965 = New color scheme. For models 153 and 601, the bag is now represented as being grey in color, with the R-O-Y-A-L letters seen on the red portion, whereas for the 801, what is grey is tan instead. The Adjust-O-Rite for model 801 changes colors too: it is now red with white R-O-Y-A-L letters on the left half and the crown logo and ADJUST-O-RITE on the right half. Most trim is grey in color. 1966-1980 = This period represents greater variety in trim and bag designs. Models 153, 602 and 603 = Bag is dark blue with silver/red embroidered R-O-Y-A-L letters on the left half of the bag and the crown on the right half. Model 153 is a shake-out design with black plastic bag top, while for 602 and 603 it is a zipper bag for use with paper inserts. Trim is grey with blue hammertoned motor housing, with polished aluminum nozzle and headlight (on model 153, all metal parts are blue hammertone, including the nozzle). Model 602 uses the Adjust-O-Rite. For 1977, the 153/602's bag becomes a light blue instead of dark blue. Models 606 and 606A Heavy Duty Commercial = Bag is dark blue with silver/red embroidered ROYAL letters, with crown logo above, and stripes running through the company name, with the word COMMERCIAL in red seen at bottom-most portion of the bag. Model 606 has a cast headlight whereas model 606A uses a deluxe flip-up headlight. The Adjust-O-Rite is blue in color with red R-O-Y-A-L letters on the left half and the crown and ADJUST-O-RITE text on the right half. After 1975, the Adjust-O-Rite logo is made over, with the words "Adjust" and "Rite" in the same font as Royal's corporate logo letters. For 1976, the color of the Adjust-O-Rite plate is red. Model 801 = Bag is tan, with silver/red R-O-Y-A-L letters on the left half of the bag and the crown on the right half. For 1967, the letters and crown would be aligned in center. For 1977, the bag changes its graphics, which on top we see the then-current corporate crown logo, with the R-O-Y-A-L letters in a bold, futuristic font. Model 880 = Like 801, but with blue bag with same details. This model has a deluxe headlight with blue trim. In 1967, the letters and crown are aligned in center. For 1971, the bag is made of diamondback vinyl and has the crown and letters in outlined text. All trim, including the bumpers, cord and Adjust-O-Rite, is light blue. For 1977, as with the 801, the bag changes its graphics to the then-current corporate crown logo on topmost portion of bag, with the R-O-Y-A-L letters in a bold, futuristic font. MOTOR AMPERAGE 101 Circa 1948-Circa 1970 = 350 watts 1971-1974 = 400 watts 1975-1980 = 3.0 amps ADJUST-O-RITE 101 Circa 1948-Circa 1957 = "Lady bug" colors: left half of plate is black with red R-O-Y-A-L letters seen vertically, whereas the right half of plate is red with crown logo. Circa 1958-Circa 1974 = Red colored plate with white R-O-Y-A-L letters seen vertically, and crown logo and ADJUST-O-RITE logo on right half, used on model 801. Models 602, 880 and all commercial models use a light blue colored plate with red R-O-Y-A-L letters. Electro-Hygiene (1955-1974) = Red colored plate with "Electro" in a cursive font on the top half of the plate, and "HYGIENE" is on the bottom half of plate. Lightning bolts are seen by the pull knob. After 1975, it will use the same red plate as the model 801 and post-1975 model 602 and commercial models. Circa 1975-1980 = As before, model 801 (and all Electro-Hygiene models) uses a red colored plate and models 602, 880 and commercials use a light blue colored plate. The words "Adjust" and "Rite" are now in the same font as Royal's then-current corporate logo letters. From 1976, models 602 and commercials will adopt the 801's red Adjust-O-Rite plate. Please feel free to add any pictures of 1980 and older models, and to submit any additions or corrections to the timeline(s) in this topic. ~Ben |
