I was in a thrift store the other day, and I ran across this box. Any guesses on what's inside?

I'll guess!

Er, uh, a dead president?

Jimmy Hoffa?

Close, it was Jimmy Hoffa!

Now we know where he went.

Well Reggie, one would of course guess some kind of an early Hoover but that would be to easy!! It will be fun when you show what is really in there.....

It is missing the upholstry tool and dusting brush...

Post# 17499 , Reply# 9   7/30/2007 at 22:32 (6,112 days old) by compactc9 ()

But it has the sprayer and manual.

A very impressive set. I have always liked the Hoover canisters of that style and they never seem to get enough attention from collectors compared to the uprights.

Oh, by the way, it says 51 on the front of the box. Makes guessing very easy.

Reggie...

Great find! These are very well built, quiet running machines. The good folks here in North Canton built them with pride from 1950-1952. They made 179,100 of them too. It is odd to me that yours has a woven hose and not the "new" rubber/vinyl "Veriflex" hose. Is yours an early serial number? It is hard to tell from the box tag. The serial numbers started with 6,154,601 and ended with 6,333,701. This tank type cleaner was painted to match the deluxe model 62 upright. Thanks for the photos!!!!

6,163,843 Is the number on the box lable. I would guess fairly early then?

Pass the smelling salts...

Congratulations on a great find. What a wonderful surprise. It's finds like these that give me hope that there are other great vintage vacuums still out there just waiting to be discovered.

I always tell everyone when they get discouraged that there are always good finds waiting. I wasn't even expecting to find this when I walked into the store.

That is one beautiful 51 you have there. And finding it at a thrift, you must have gotten a great bargain on it, too!

Goggles on forehead - Maniacal Bud Cort grin....

Nice, Reggie. What I could do with that machine. Do you mind telling us how you came to own such a fine piece of iron?

WOW!

That's an amazing find! And in the box!

Tom--I, too was wondering about the woven hose vs. the Veriflex hose. I've never actually seen a woven hose for the Hoover tanks. My model 50 came with a Veriflex.

How does it run? Does it seem like it spent most of its life in the box? Original cord?

Congrats!

~Fred

Reggie,

Congrats!!

I notice that there have been a couple of those machines listed on E-Bay lately. I have an Ad for that machine that shows that same cloth hose.

Does it have the bag cleaning mechanism? Would love to see how that works. Fred Nelson has a near mint machine, but for whatever reason I have never had the chance to see it up close.

Woven vs Veriflex

compactelectra's profile picture
I believe that they switched over during the run of the 50 or 51 from woven to veriflex. In the parts list it also shows a woven hose available for commercial service. I'll check my list.

Hoses

I've had a couple of 51's, the first one had the woven hose and I thought that was odd, I gave that one to Phillip when I found another 51 in pristine shape with the veriflex hose. Really a nice vacuum, but can you imagine the attached cloth bag if it had heavy use? You would've had to have another vacuum to clean it out!

Wow!

What a find! My Dad says his mom had one of these when he was a kid. He remembers working a lever that knocked the dirt out of the bag.
Is there a way you can scan the manual? I would love to see what it looks like.
Thanks
Nicholas

Here's The Answer

compactelectra's profile picture
About the woven or braided hose. The parts list for the machine.

The Veriflex Hose

compactelectra's profile picture
Started with serial number 6,175,013. Prior to that it was the Braided Hose - Part number 22140. $6.30. Don't you wish you could still order from that list?

Wow, what a great looking machine, and neat parts list. I hope sometime someone could post things like that for the GE Swivel-Top models.

Fred,

Thanks for posting the parts list. Now we all know why some 51s had the cloth hose and some had the Veriflex. To me the Veriflex was far superior. It is more agile and more sealed than the old woven hose. I imagine that it was much less expensive to produce as well. Thank you for clearing up this mystery!

It is all original, and seems to have hd a very easy life. After cleaning the bag and pre-motor filter it runs very well and hs good airflow.

How much did you get this bad boy for? If I may ask?

Very nice, Reggie! It looks better than you described - that is probably my favorite of the older Hoover logos.

Congrats on a good find!
