Forget about how well they work - or that they work at all! Which vacuum, in your opinion is the most striking visually? For me, I would have to say it is the Electrolux LX - the first vacuum that I bought because it was "beautiful".

The Kirby Classic Omega. Have loved em since i first saw one new in 1973. Now, i dont mean a dirty old neglected dulled metal falling apart Classic Omega, im talking Factory rebuilt, shining like a brand new mirror in A1 condition right out of the box Omega.
The dark rosewood brown against the mirror like chrome. The Omega symbol with a bright new hadlignt bulb, in the front above belt lifter, the woodgrain decal on the handle bale all shined up. The regal slope on both sides of the rug nozzle, like a bell,, WOW! Now THATS a vacuum cleaner.

I think the blue Kirby Tradition with the chrome all shined up like a mirror is pretty too,,,but there is just something about the Classic Omega Rosewood.

The Electrolux Golden Jubilee also holds a special place in my mind as a thing of beauty. Again, in brand new like A1 Condition. There just isnt another Electrolux that is as pretty to look at, IMHO.

Where i come from ( small town in SE Minnesota) it isnt WHAT vacuum do you have, its WHICH Electrolux do you have.
When they came out with the Golden Jubilee,,you left it out, in a corner of your living room or wherever people would see it. Was like a golden trophy.

This is a tough question - Because it is close between my 1982 Electrolux 502S and my 1977 HOOVER Senior Ranger U4014...

After much thought I think I have to go with the Ranger, as nothing compares to a cloth bag with the vertical "HOOVER" lettering.

James, that Singer is beautiful! Mine would have to be my Electrolux xxx. I just love it. Very quiet, has strong suction (even with the original hose!), and it looks really neat!

It's a four-way tie for me!

tazcatsdad's profile picture

Honestly - I couldn't decide on just one!  All four of these machines are beautiful to me for one reason or another.  From left to right in the picture below, my vote goes to the following:

* Hoover Convertible 70

* Hoover Convertible Deluxe 1070

* Hoover Convertible Elite U4059

* Eureka Golden Vanguard 2092A

My most beautiful vacuum

I would have to agree with Graham. My most beautiful vacuum would be my Electrolux LX. Followed by the LXI and last but not least, my pristine Model G.

The Electrolux vacuum cleaners from the 1950's, were functioning works of art.

A great evening to all,

Richard

So many to choose from.  This would have to my idea of one of my most beautiful.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and some don't like the Super J, but it is one of my favorites and one that I think is beautiful.  Excuse the dust on the matching B-8.

I'll take "over-the-top" as a compliment, thank you. The Kenmore Imperial Automatic dates from about 1935. It is more commonly referred to, in collector terms, as a "Bug-Eye Kenmore." Thanks for asking. I always enjoy showing it off.

Here is my Rainbow D2 I bought off eBay last year when I was in the hospital.  It is in perfect condition, and 99% complete.  I bought a new hose for it because the original hose has stiffened with age and has a tacky feel to it.  I use the original hose for display purposes only.

This is my favourite, the original Premiere Mini 175 commercial vacuum. Such a quirky design that works so well. The motor is upside down in the base of the machine, a bit like a Hoover Constellation. They really are fantastic and last forever.

Must also be one of the longest running vacuums too, they have been in production relatively unchanged since 1975 and are still made in the same factory to this day. The current one comes with a lifetime guarantee!

That is trully a great vacuum, I wish I could get hold of another one.

On the life time guarantee, who's life time. I was chatting to a mate in the business and we were discussing Life time guarantee's on many vacuums.

The machine comes with a life time guarantee and when its motor burns out its life time is over there fore it lasted its life and no guarantee claim :) Not knocking your premier, they are great just the whole life time guarantee thing leaves alot of grey area's

hmmm spose lol….

however, under normal commercial use, most of them tend to last a good 20-25 years if not more. Think thats pretty good for any vac really. I've always loved them though, they had loads of them at my primary school, and the bigger 275 Maxi

they really are great and like i say have hardly changed since 1975. I spose if something ain't broke it don't need fixing. It's just a good robust design that works well. One of the best commercial vacuums. And it looks great lol Very popular in schools

Fred, your red Kirby Classic III is absolutely beautiful. There was a red Classic III on my local CraigsList for $25.00, I kept emailing the the seller, to arrange a purchase, but I never got a response.

The Kirby Tradition and the Classic III are imho the two prettiest Kirbys.

I did a round trip of 500 miles in one day to pick this up - this is the most expensive vintage cleaner (£175 + petrol) i have purchased although I consider well worth it. And it was good to meet the seller from whom I have bought several more cleaners (including the SA Hoover 4006), all of whom have been in good condition.

The story was that it was purchased by someone in the army who bought it while serving at BFBO in Germany. When posted back in the UK his wife would not use it as the "electricity was wrong" - complete nonsense of course its just a different format of plug. But into the attic it went, not to be used for 40 years or so.Still their loss was my gain. It came with its original hose which is dark brown, rather like that of the Portable

You would think it did not have the standard switch plate, but it did, its just a very good colour match.

This is one of 5 DAM's which I have, the latest of which I only got a couple of weeks ago, but thats for another thread. The picture is of the others

The first Rexair, Series A, began selling in October, 1936. The first serial number was 1001. All Rexair serial numbers are consecutive The first serial number for the model B (Launched in April, 1940 - called "The Black Diamond Model" by the company) was around the 172,000 mark.

Model A's do NOT have a front nameplate, only a nameplate under the handle. The 'legs' are painted wrinkle brown, as is the hose intake port. On model B's, these would all be polished aluminum.

First models did NOT use water. They were dual cyclonic (like Dyson claimed he 'invented' 50 years later). In April, 1937 - customers were given the diaphragm (seen to the right of the pan), and told to fill the pan half way with water. The diaphragm was inserted into the top of the pan, and brought the airflow UNDER the water level. Since the machine was never made with the intention of using water - the entire top of the pan is open to facilitate emptying. The original intent of Rexair was to create a vacuum that had NO bag and No Loss of Suction.

Model A and pre World War II model B's - had a screw keeping the upper hooks that hold the 'lid' in place, from being opened. You can always tell a pre-war model by these screws.

You had to remove the screw once every three months (again, just like Dyson directs) to remove the "Muffler" (a post motor filter that removed carbon brush residue from the exhaust air.

The underside of the lid was a 'cage' that allowed the Muffler to expand. The lid was simplified with the removal of this cage after the war, when the Muffler was also discontinued - just as Dyson found out, people don't wash them (out of sight, out of mind).

Good morning Tom.

First let me say that I really like that ring, simple yet stunning! And speaking of stunning, those upright Air-Ways are awesome.

As you probably recall, I have several Air-Ways both upright and canister, which unfortunately have been in storage since November of 06. Plans are in the works to bring them here in about 5 weeks. Since I'm deep in the woods of PA., a professional buffing is not possible. Any ideas on how I can get my Air-Way's, as well as a lot of other vacuum cleaners looking half as good?

And here's a place you might remember.

Thanks,

Alex Taber.

Thanks Alex. I do remember that garage, converted in the first vacuum museum. We had so much fun running all the different machines. So many that I had never seen before. That little oriental rug sure got a workout that weekend of my first convention. I'm surprised there's any nap left on it at all.

I use Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish because that's what Stan Kann used. But there's a secret. You liberally apply the compound (with a rag), then LET IT DRY. After a half hour, remoisten the rag, and go in circles with the rag getting darker and darker. You WANT the rag to turn black, that's what's doing the shining. A clean soft rag to buff off the compound, and the machine is ten times brighter. The letting it dry part was what Stan taught me, and you remember how beautiful all his machines were.

For me, its gotta be my Hoover 1346, from 1967, only made in this colour scheme for a short time in 1967, it has the pumpkin orange front plate and brown bag, such a lovely colour scheme from that era. I love this little Junior, its my favourite vintage model

Most beautiful vacuum cleaner?

caligula's profile picture
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and for me that means two things. Design, and historic value. My favorite vacuum cleaner bar none is the Electrolux LX, but when it comes to historical value, as well as simple, basic design, I have to say that it's the Whirlwind. No, this is not a Hoover model, Hoover wasn't even thought of back then. The Whirlwind is the oldest known vacuum cleaner, or if not the oldest, the first mass produced cleaning device for home use.

I've posted this picture several times, but for those who don't know about the non-electric's, here's the history. Ives W. McGaffy, of Chicago, Illinois, invented a simple wooden upright, hand cranked sweeping machine. The year was 1869, and two years before the Great Chicago fire of 1871. The Whirlwind was manufactured by The American Carpet Cleaning company of Boston that same year, and sold for $25.00. A fortune back then!

Here it is.

Alex Taber.

Unfortunately, I don't own any rare vacuums and my Kirby Sanitronic VII is still rather.... sad looking.

This is still a WIP machine. It's more of a "when I feel like it" machine. I'll polish it for half an hour a week or so. I need to get myself some sand paper.

Dysonman1;

Thank you for your information and pictures of the Rexair A and B. I have heard many talks about the coveted model a but no one would or could ever produce pictures. Are you saying that the only thing that differentiates the b from the a (as far as how it works) is the diaphram? Or is the a's motor different for dry pickup?
That 4qt rolling basin for the B is also something I definitely never heard of! A one of a kind for sure.

I would say my most beautiful vacuum is my Innovation, but I'm biased towards that machine in every way. If I had to pick another, more vintage and classic and truely elegant to display machine it'd be my Sanitronic 50's....only Kirby with the lighted logo, you don't get any better than that.
