I seem to be collecting alot of Hoovers lately. I have decided to compete with John's (gottohavehoovers ) collection :)

I got this one from a old lady and am really happy, these are really rare here in SA these days , most been sent to the scrap yard.

I had been looking for a blue and white one ontop of it and got it.

It needs some work and will probably get a total overhaul with new paint to top it off.

Head light works too

I love my dysons but nothing beats and lifts a carpet pile like a old Hoover 652 not even a Kirby

Is this a 652C or a 6525C. Were any Hoovers of this era sold with paper bags? I have a SA Ranger 4002 and it also has a shakeout bag, in exactly the right colour, just a shake out.

And I rather agree about these old Hoovers :)

its a 652c It has a shake out bag, that Sa ranger with a shake out bag is trully odd, later 652"s had paper bags and every ranger I have ever seen had paper bags too , cool

My '77 HOOVER Ranger lifts the carpet and beats the hell out of it, in a good way, so I totally agree with you about them being the best.

upright Hoover with atts

Very nice!I would say 'an American classic'but as with your Mercedes these became a worldwide product that could be used and understood "around the house, around the world".I like the changes of switch, cord mount and atts with 2 wands as well as US version. Also like the British use of Senior name on these.

Just to pick up on your comments posted in error in the off topic shake & vac thread, I bought the SA Ranger off ebay here in the UK, how it got back here I have no idea. I believe the model is U4006 and it is exactly the same colour scheme as the U4002 that we had here. I have a recollection that the seller said that Hoover shipped out parts to SA for assembly there.

It is a bit buried under a number of other cleaners but I am in the midst of having a sort out so I may post some pictures soon.

Hoover had a full manufacturing plant here in SA were everything from the motors to the bags and shells were made. They even had a design and engineering dep here and there were a few SA only models\ variations.

The last machines to be made here were the turbopower two& three alongside turbo power 1 ( sold as a economy model) and the Turbomaster tol . That was the best selling vacuum in SA during the 90's

Yes it was trully sad , same thing happened to Electrolux were I worked. Its just cheaper to import although hoover went belly up here due to some financial mismanagment, now we get cheap made in china vacuums badged as hoovers.

Some were in a store room I have at least 10 prototype test mule Hoovers that a friend got for me when the factory shut , they were meant to be destroyed but I have them, one is a hoover simplicity or turbomaster with all sorts of test pipes attached , a couple of rangers with unique hoods and one with a cardboard enclosed bag( obviously a mock up ie the cardboard but it works )

Thank goodness you kept them. You are a "curator". A true piece of history.

working every day with model 652C, for me is a real pleasure.
You are lucky to have this one, it works perfectly
The day I got this one, the condition was perfect, no durth, no rust, "almost" new.

By June, I probably will have one for each room. Waiting for two more this month, then another one on May, then one more on June.
After that, I stop to buy.

Years ago, we had a guy who restored the old Hoover but now he prefers to sale new models. I can understand but this is not good for families who want to restore their old vacuum.
My brother has a grey 652A from 1959 in absolutely perfect condition. I still have hope his wife takes a great care of the engin... ! (without destructive maid)

Do you have any pictures of the test mules Gareth?

I wish I was born 2p hears earlier so I could have been about during hoovers UK heyday. If I could go back in time I'd buy the lot and at least archive it all like Jensen have done in the UK!

Gsheen,

How is the restoration going on that rare South American Hoover 638?! That machine looked like it had been to hell & back again. I'm sure everyone would love to see pics of the progress or finished product.
