I pulled the motor on my Electrolux Model L and disassembled much of the motor itself. I discovered what I think is a sleeve bearing on the fan end. However, what kind of bearing is there on the commutator end and how do I access it? Do I pull the motor field in order to get to that bearing? It seems to be sealed in something. Thanks!

Hi Bill:

Here's a link to a thread where Nathan Thomas ("electrolux-dude") gives a basic run-down on how to service these motors. There may be other threads where more info is given.

Nathan is in Texas, too (Amarillo, I think), and he is a great guy to deal with, as I've learned over the course of several transactions. You might even check with him about rebuilding your motor for you.

I'd forgotten that I already bookmarked that page. So I guess if there is a bearing down on the commutator end that it is permanently sealed.

The bushing on the commutator end is easy to service. I just use 3 in 1 oil (blue bottle, not red) and fill the hole up, then it will soak into the felt wicking which is enclosed and you are good to go!

One last question

... I hope! Once you drill out the rivets in the bearing plate and replace the bearing, do you reattach the retainer with pop rivets? The rivets in there seem to be some kind of tubular rivet that stays flush. Thanks!
