Hey Guys:

Just wanted to let you guys know. I just lost over 1/2 of my collection and all of my spare parts.

I'm in Calgary just starting on my holidays. Got a phone call. My apartment building (I own it but dont live there) is on fire - arson. Its a total loss so everything that was stored there is gone. Sigh I dont know what to do.

At least all the tenants got out.

Doug

I'm so sorry, as well. What cleaners did you lose? How can we help? When things calm down, please stay in touch. A disatrous fire is awful. Thank God, though, that no people were hurt. Their vacuums were lost, too.

Doug, I am so sorry to hear of your loss! It's a collector's worst nightmare come true, as others have stated. And to think someone could be evil enough to do this in this day & age....they have not only affected your life, but that of your tenants as well.

If there is anything I can do, or any way I can be of help during this period, please either call or message me on Facebook. And know that you will have support from all of us on Vacuumland, & on my Facebook group. I'm sure everyone feels badly for your loss, & when the time is right, perhaps members can help you rebuild some of your collection pieces that are gone.

Rob

Hi Guys:

I know I lost alot of stuff but my Electrolux's, Goblins, Presidents and Lewyts as well as some others were at the house and the Old Hoovers are on display at the museum. When I get home I'll have to take an inventory and see what was where. Next to nothing for spare parts and machines left though. That was all there.

Doug, let me add my sincere condolences, what horrible thing to happen! We're all behind you. While the loss of the building and part of your collection is gut-wrenching, thank God there was no loss of life.

Doug:

I hope the damage will be less than you fear.

If it is substantial, I offer this - in the full knowledge that it's not adequate comfort:

For reasons I won't bore people here with, I lost over 90% of my personal possessions and collections, three years ago. I was devastated; my whole LIFE was represented there.

But since then, some things have been replaced with duplicates, some things I never owned have surfaced, and I've had many a new adventure in the meantime. Those adventures have led to new friends.

So, it was a terrible thing to have happen, but I'm still here, and a new life has begun. I hope you won't have to start all over again, but if you do, it does get better.

I am so sorry for your loss Doug.

Though I am glad you are safe, and no one died, the loss of half your collection saddens us all here at Vacuumland. Your website was one of the first that gave me information and images of all those Eurekas and Vikings and Singers and Reginas that I used to know as a kid growing up in Montreal.

I really feel the loss.....hope the "universe" helps you restore some of what you lost with ease....

Let us know how you progress in recuperating from this terrible tragedy. :-)

Doug - I can't even imagine.  The loss of a major part of the collection is awful, but other things that can't be replaced as well.  Thank goodness no one was hurt physically.  I often think about what would happen if such a thing happened to me.  So many things that can't be replaced.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thanks Everyone:

Everything is pretty much on hold at the moment. I'm out of town but not much I can do. Spent 5 hours on the phone this morning getting stuff arranged etc. While they initially thought it was arson they arent certain now. It may have started inside the building and spread out. We wont know for certain till the inspectors finish their work.

Doug

Doug,

Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

As many have said at least no one was hurt in the fire. That is a blessing in itself.

Let us know if there is anything we can do!

fire loss

This is terrible and little I can add except to hope you and tenants get through this. Are you beginning to know if rebuilding is possible or practical within the reality of condition of remains, insurance, general needs and economy of your area and downtown?Near me some towns do amazing things with upstairs lofts and downtown business and others are very much in the recession. My east side neighbor would have been a large 2 story building, but due to fire is now small 1 story office. If and when you might be able to think of vacs,if you can make a truck with Canadian plates appear at my place of which we do not speak it can be filled with American Elux,Viking,Vorwerk,Hoover,AirWay,GE,&MORE.Best wishes,Good luck! Jimmy

We had a bank building from the 1920s or so in downtown Stuart Florida, that at the time had the local AA renting it. It burned to the ground, so to speak, it was a concrete and stone building. Somehow, instead of turning it into a parking lot, the building was reproduced after the fire, and you really wouldn't know that it wasn't the same building. Upstairs and all. I think it has to do with keeping their downtown historical, which I'm all for. I hope after all is said and done, you all get exactly what you should get after that disaster.
