This Electrolux had hardly been used !

pnluxconvlvr's profile picture
The canister was so perfect it was almost as new except for the wheels and two gray smudges that left no scratch. The bag chamber had no film or odor. And when I opened the exhaust door it was as new. Not even a rust speckle anywhere. Even the gold and silver lettering was as new. Unbelievable.

Beautemous!

That is a gorgeous Lux! Having used one of those many times, I can tell you you'll be very happy with its performance.

Not many of them are in that condition, either - you did very well. It's nice to hear about a purchase that arrived in good condition, properly packed without shipping damage.

Did it come with a PN and tools? The correct PN for that one is the PN-2 with the Golden Jubilee sticker on it. Tools should be off-white. I can see you got a modern vinyl hose with it. Frankly, I think that's better for actual use than an original hose, which would leak by now, and was never as flexible as the vinyl ones.

Nice machine. NICE.

P.S.: Do your kitties like being vacuumed? My Tony LOOOOOOVES getting vacuumed with my 1205.

It was missing the power nozzle. Three attempts to find one.

The first PN2 I found looked like it was used to vacuum a gravel driveway. Worst PN2 I have ever seen :

Recommended Lubricant:

Elbow grease!

My PN-4, bought with my 1974 Model L, was in worse shape than that. Careful disassembly, cleaning, buffing (by hand - whew!) and reassembly with a new brushroll made it very nice indeed.

Even though the result of reconditioning that one might not put it into the same pristine condition as the vac, you'd have a usable PN that would do until you find a better one.

P.S.: The buffing was done with Brillo first, to remove the rough oxidation and start polishing. Then came Nevr-Dull, to begin bringing up a luster. Last was Brasso, for a good shine. Not the same as machine buffing, but it made a helluva difference on a very distressed PN housing.

That IS Weird!

Usually, PN-2s and PN-4s are excellent candidates for rebuilding, because their metal housings can be buffed, and their plastic parts are of really high quality. I dunno what happened there.

BTW, when I put a Lux PN back together, I always lubricate the shaft of those roller wheels with silicone. Silicone doesn't attract dirt, and it makes a big difference in how quiet the PN is in use. A lot of Lux PNs I've had started out with a bad, screechy squeak every time the PN was moved back and forth on the carpet; seems to be inherent in the design unless lubed.

Can You....

....Use them both to make one good one?

I know that looking at photos isn't like seeing the actual item, but neither of those look all THAT bad to me. I meant it when I said my most recent PN-4 acquisition was horrible - it was the filthiest PN I have EVER seen, bar none. And the housing, originally polished bright as chrome, looked like charcoal grey suede.

She's way better now!

That thing is GORGEOUS! You have done a superb job of cleaning it! Hats off to ya.

You've just taught me something - I did not know about the plastic washers. I have never, in all my years around Luxes, seen one of their PNs with them intact. Now I have to find some for my PN-2.

Yes, I'd be interested in the motor. Could you email me off-list and let me know what you need for it? Thanks!

Again, congratulations. That Golden Jubilee is going to have a proper PN-2, I can see.

This project has taken me about a hundred and ten hours total. The metal polishing is hard work. The person that had the vacuum stored it, maybe because it had no power nozzle with it, and I threw out the crappy white vinyl hose that somebody put in the box. I was asked if I wanted the hose and I thought to myself "just say yes as it will be good cushioning packing material" :). The person I bought it from put chunks of styrofoam all around the canister. Best packing job ever!

I Wonder....

....If that Golden Jubilee was one of the famous Electrolux salesman's "Now and Later" sales.

You see Luxes without PNs because they were priced separately, and what salesmen would do with a customer who couldn't afford everything at once was to go ahead and sell the canister, and then follow up later to work with the customer and sell them the PN.

Obviously, not everyone needed the PN (a lot of houses had only area rugs then), and some never bought it. 1205s seem to turn up without PNs more than later models do.

1205 and PNs

The first Lux I ever lusted after was a brand-new 1205 with a PN-2 in the window of the Electrolux agency on Piedmont Avenue; I worked a couple of doors down at the time. Every day, I had to walk past all that turquoise-and-polished-aluminum goodness.

I knew it was too expensive for me at the time, but I eventually went in anyway and asked about it. Well, they were very kind - they soon assessed my finances and said the 1205 was a little (uh, a lot) more than they were willing to finance, but I COULD be approved for a refurbished Model L (in hammertone blue) with a PN-1. All the tools were new. I think it was $129.95 total. A roommate stole it some years later.

I've had a soft spot for Luxes ever since.

Yeah.....

....That 1205 in the window of the Lux agency (close to Ansley Mall) looked like a small Rolls-Royce sitting there. The sales guys had it polished to the point that the aluminum looked like sterling silver. It was gorgeous, and it just SCREAMED "Expensive!"

The demo machine inside looked very nice, but it sure didn't look like the one in the window. I remember they had it displayed with a turquoise B-8 shampooer/polisher, which was also polished to within an inch of its life.

I never dreamed that such wondrous, expensive things would one day end up battered and filthy in thrift stores.

Fortunately for me, eventually they did. ;-)

Other kitties who appreciate nice vacuums.

My little boy, Tony, has always liked them, was never afraid of them, and then one day, when he was curious about the dusting brush when I was vacuuming, I touched it to his fur, to see if he'd tolerate it.

INSTANT ADDICTION. He loved it, and begs to be vacuumed every time I use the machine. Helps quite a bit with keeping hair off everything, I must say.

Wow, that is a fantastic vac in fantastic shape. You are very fortunate!

To tell my story, I picked up a Golden Jubilee off a guy from Craigslist. It was pretty beat up. He originally wanted $20 for it and I told him I was interested. He emailed me back to let me know it was still available. Then I got really busy and forgot about it. The next time I got around to looking, he was giving it away for free. I jumped!

When I got there he was a guy his mid 20's. I bet the vac had belonged to his mom or aunt and he had been using it because it was the vac that had always been around. He said was getting rid of it because it was "old" and he just wanted something newer. As I was loading it into my car, he said wait, there was something else. He went into the house and brought out a cardboard box. It was a bulk box of new original bags, about 50 or so left. I thanked him and drove off.

I was initially interested for the sheer sake of getting and playing with a new-to-me Electrolux for cheap. He hadn't specified a model and the only thing I could tell from the small pic was that it was a metal bodied tank. When I got there, I was taken by the PN. It looks just like yours with the aluminum on top. The bottom plate is different, though. Instead of the wide rollers it has two bigger wheels on either side of the hose/pivot, and the bottom plate is a cream color. PN4? I'm not sure. When he came out of the house with the bags, I thought: well, if I never get around to using or restoring the new vac, at least I got some bags to use in my 80th Anniversary Ultralux.

Now that I see your gorgeous machine, I will definitely restore mine. Truth be told, I was initially going to donate the body to the thrift store as the Cadillac/Kennedy Era styling is not my bag, but the pics of your vac have changed my mind. The exploded view of the PN will be incredibly helpful, btw, so thanks for that.

I think whoever owned my machine took off the Golden Jubilee stickers, but am I right in thinking it must be a Golden Jubilee model if it's gold? Also, the hose is definitely shot. Pretty frayed and probably leaky as heck.

Thanks for sharing your restore. Very inspiring! I hope you enjoy it!

I have 2 questions.

1. Where did you get the "Perfect" type lux vac bags?

2. Where did you get your hose from?

Hi sanifan !

pnluxconvlvr's profile picture
That is great that you have a great Electrolux. I just love the aqua blue decals against the gold being a special model, especially since there were only around 20,000 total produced and find it very intriguing. Sounds like you do have a PN4 which is also an excellent PN. I was'nt sure I would be able to complete this Golden Jubilee, but am very greatful I was able to find the pieces and parts to do a restoration. The PN2 is probably the most simplistic of all the power nozzles but it is nice to see a break down. Glad it was of use. I remember trying to figure out how to get the sole plate off the bottom of a PN2 and after the fact realizing you had to take the top off first to release the "catch" from inside with a flat screwdriver. It's the small things sometimes. :)

The Perfect bags I did an internet search on and different online stores have them at different times. I have not seen the Perfect bags in person in a store though as of yet. The last box I bought on Amazon a week ago. The hose I found on Ebay almost a year ago. I had to really search for the tan/beige as most I see are the gray. Wish they made them in blue as well. May have to get a newer model blue hose and change the ends. :)

Thanks! Finding out about these machines is fun. I did not realize the Golden Jubilee was that rare. Turns out the one I have may be a Super J, not the Golden Jubilee. It's the same color as the Golden Jubilee but has a more powerful (and noisier) motor, apparently. See the link below. Maybe that's why there was no sticker on it. It may not be as rare as the GJ, either. I'm not sure. Is there any way of telling the difference between the two?

I do like the turquoise models and the Silverado a lot. All these older Luxes sure were classy!

WOW, what a beauty! Sure brings back memories! The Golden J was one of the first Lux's i was ever in love with and is my favorite of all the models!
My Grandma bought one new in the Spring of 1976,,,it was evidently one of the last Golden Js, before the Super Js came out. It is the exact same machine you have. I know she gave around 400 dollars for it.
I used the heck out of that machine over the years,Grandma's house was one of those big old 2 stories with 4 bedrooms upstairs, all with wall to wall carpet, and a huge carpeted stair case.
The Golden J and i spent many hours up and down those stairs!
It really was a serious work out vacuuming that whole house, and the Golden J never missed a beat!
It was Grandma's only vacuum for over 15 yrs. It finally got to be too heavy for her to carry up and down the strairs, so i got her a Lux Discovery upright for the upstairs, and she used the Golden J for the main floor.
When Grandma went to the rest home in the late 1990s, and we went to clean out the house to get it ready to sell,,,you can be sure the Golden J came home with me after cleaning that huge house for the last time!
Its now settled into quiet retirement, and gets used occasionally. The motor is a little tired now,but still has that Electrolux smell.
I would restore it, if it would come out as nice as yours, but i think ill keep it the way Grandma left it. Thanks for the memory!

Tyler:

Now that I've had some beauty sleep (HA!), I'm really bowled over by the final product you've posted here. That is ONE GORGEOUS MACHINE.

I see that you've done the same thing I do with Luxes - put the new, genuine Aerus hose and the new, genuine wand sheath on it. Both are much better designs than the originals, and make the vac much more fun to use. And since both are the original manufacturer's current parts, there's no question of "bojacking."

I am truly impressed. I wish I could find a 1205 "sleeper" like that! P.S.: I've emailed you about the PN-2 motor; get back to me when you have time.

Again, congratulations on a fantastic machine and a super-impressive restoration.

Hans:

"I think a PN-2 was the finest power nozzle ever!"

I think the PN-4 is equally good, but I can definitely agree that those two PNs are the finest ones Lux ever made.

My guess is that a lot of the performance is down to the weight of the head; that cast-aluminum shell gives the PN some necessary heft. The PN-5 is not nearly so good a performer, due to both its lightness and that idiotic "floating" feature.

The other thing I enjoy about my PN-2s and PN-4s is that they're very rebuildable, due to the polished aluminum housing. You can take a very nasty one and make it look like new if you're willing to put in the work polishing it.

btw, my Model L & 1205s are still in pristine shape. However, I ended up buying a gray electrified hose for the 1205 & I'm thinking about changing the machine end coupling to use the hose on a Model L.

I couldn't find an elecric hose that swivels, w/slider vent & ON/OFF switch for the L. Either the hose handle is non-swivel OR does not have the suction control & switch.

This is as closest to what I can find; but I'm NOT willing to pay the high price!

That is a great story. I used an Electrolux 1205 and a Hoover Convertible Special to vacuum the five bedroom house I grew up in once a week. I remember using the 1205 with the power nozzle and crevice tool on the two sets (front and back) split entry carpeted staircases. All three bathrooms and the kitchen were even carpeted. No wonder I love Electrolux and Hoover to this day. They were my best friends. :)

I lucked up floor-a-matic.......

pnluxconvlvr's profile picture
.......and found it on Ebay about a year ago. I was so lucky that it was in MINT condition and was able to disinfect the inside and use heated air to immediatley dry it with no damage. I think it is too bad that Electrolux did not include these wands with all of the units. I have fond memories of the cord coming off the sheath, but was always pinching my hand and was more awkward to connect than the direct connect. You are right about the hoses being costly costly. You'll find a telescoping wand. :)

This beauty...

Has inspired me to get my 1205 fully restored to mint condition! INCREDIBLE looking machine you got there and I saw your 1205 thread, too. Very nice work.

I've got a proposition for you - any chance you could restore my 1205 for me for appropriate pay?

I sent you an e-mail

Thanks for the kind words. It is very satisfying when you work on one of these yourself. As long as you have the basics of a good canister and nozzle, smaller parts are readily available and it is a lot of fun to order things and have them arrive to replace say a handle or a wheel, a wand or cord, etc. I personally don't have a shop equipped for dent removal or larger proper painting, and think these great vacuums should not be shipped if it can be avoided, but certainly appreciate the offer. Thank you very much ! I have tips that have helped me such as using Clorox wipes to clean off paint marks and stains and using a Magic Eraser to get plastic and matte trim such as guards looking fresh, using automotive wax to bring the luster back to aqua platic trim and metal polish to brighten and shine metal body and nozzle pieces that have no deep sratches. It really is a personal enjoyment. Would love to have my own shop. You never know :)

Why don't the newer Electrolux metal tank electrified hose have "TOP" marked on machine end coupling like the old hose did?

Tyler,

Your 1205J looks incredible--great purchase and polishing job!

I am wondering what the original attachments and hose colors were.  I have seen ones on Ebay with a gold cloth hose and cream-colored attachments--with no accent colors.   It is possible that the hose came from a gold Model L, too.

I didn't realize that the PN for the machine also had a "50th Jubilee" decal on it.  Do you happen to know if the Super J's PN had a "Super J" decal on it?

Paul

Great question Erik !

pnluxconvlvr's profile picture
I know the hose will work when inserted either way. Most of the generic new hoses to fit Electrolux have the words "patent pending" but not "TOP" as on the original braided hose. I have researched this to no avail. Would like to find more info on the subject. My original 1205 manual mentions about inserting with care to make sure the "TOP" is inserted up as well.

The 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee was model 1210. The original attachments were a white with a beautiful white braided hose with gold and turquoise braided accents. Not sure about the gold hose you saw. I have never seen a Super J with a decal on the PN 4 that came with them, but it would have looked good. Salesmen had extra 5oth Anniversary decals for the PN 2 so it's not completely impossible. Thanks again for the compliment.

Below is a link to a video of someone taking an apparently NIB never used Golden Jubilee out of the box. It shows all the original beauty of this great Electrolux.

Hey Paul;

the 1205 hose was blue with a white tracer, blue parts

1205J (or golden Jubilee) hose was white with blue and gold tracers (the reason for this was that the Blue model L was still being sold so the hose pattern could be used with it too - hence the blue) white parts. Early pn2's still had the dark blue elbow then it was changed to white to match the vac.

1401 (Super J) 1st hose was white with blue and gold tracers same as the GJ, then they changed to yellow/gold with white and blue tracers. White parts. The first PN4's had a chrome cover while the last of the run had a gold cover.

Tyler,

Re: Reply #69...You're welcome for the compliment.  Thank you for the 411--including the link.

Also, I thought the Golden J's model ID was 1205J--not 1210.  Can you shed some light on that one?

Paul

Great topic Paul. Electrolux 1205/1210

pnluxconvlvr's profile picture
When looking up various parts and history, model 1210 is specified even though the motor and a few other parts is shared with the model 1205. I'm sure model number 1210 was denoted due to other differences from model 1205 such as trim. 1205 J is a new designation for me. You can do a search of model 1210 and find parts, and I included a history link below. The inside stamp on my Golden Jubilee says just model 1205 so go figure. :) Great machine!

Tyler,

Thanks for your reply #75, although I don't know if you clarified or mystified the topic--LOL!  Maybe it became easier--after the fact--for the model's designation to become 1210 just to keep the 1205 and Golden J more easily identifiable.

Also, I appreciate the related photos and history link.

Yep, your Golden J sure is beautiful--no matter what its model ID!

Paul

Doug, does the 1401 service manual have anything about replacing cords in cord winders and how to do it? would it be possible to get copies of the 1205 j and 1401 service manuals from you at all? that would be wonderfull
