Here's an as yet undiscussed topic, I believe..

What is the specific brand you're interested in the most vacuum wise? What do you know the most about?

Me? probably European/Swedish Electrolux, Kirby, and European Hoover. (don't ask me too many technical questions :P)

Ian

Swivel-Top

My favorite vacuum is a General Electric, first the Swivel-Top of 1959 to the early '70s, and my "new" tank I got from ge1969 is a very close second.

I love Air-Way, as well as Kirby. Kirby is pretty heavy, which is one reason I love Air-Way. I also love the old Lewyts. Hoover is beginning to be a new favorite. I love the Constellation as well as the old "coffee-can" motor Hoovers!

My collection is aimed towards any older vacuum. In my opinion the best vacuum is an Air-Way. I also love the fact that they are now made in Alabama!!

I am beginning getting in the "expert" range of restoration: the painting! Motor work is fairly easy to me. I always use Molybdenum Disulfide grease. I can't say enough good things about the stuff! It stays in there without solidifying. It also prevents wear and tear since it binds to the metal, somewhat. It is great for "oiled" sleeve bearings, like Hoover. Also, you can use it for ball bearings.

I hope t get my Air-Way 77 completed soon! It'll hopefully look great once I get all of these parts for it! I am VERY excited about this restoration!

Mine would have to be Electrolux! As a child I always knew which houses in the neighborhood and which relatives that had one. This would have been the model xxx. When the word vacuum comes up, it is the first picture I see in my mind.

I have a variety of makes in my collection and am interested in all makes and models. However, if were talking favorites, it would be Electro-Hygiene, Hoover, and Electrolux. And my all-time favorite? Electro-Hygiene model 903!

It would be hard to choose between Eureka, Electrolux and GE!

I love them all, but from a collector's standpoint it would have to be Rexair, Air-Way, and Hoover (from the old days, not since Hoover has become just another cheap vacuum). I bought a Model B Rexair at age 9 in 1957. By 1958 I had met the Denver, CO Rexair Branch Manager (later among the first independent distributors), the late Harold Mench and Mrs. Mench. I hung out at the Rexair office as much as I could get away with, and by age 14 in 1961 was doing all their repair work. Now, both Mr. and Mrs. Mench, who didn't yet know one another, were hired by T. Russ Hill, founder and original President of Rexair, in the Spring of 1937. The first machine had been sold in November of 1936. I learned an enormous amount about the early history of the machine and the company from the Menches, so, I believe, I am the Club's Rexair expert. I have recently volunteered my services to Customer Service at Rexair, to correct the many errors on their website regarding the old models. (For example, they erroneously illustrate the Model C, from 1950-55 as the original Series A Rexair built 1936-1940.) Customer Service is excited about this project, but have expressed concerned that top management won't care, as it has no effect on the sale of new units.

Electrolux

I grew up in a Hoover family and have great respect for those early uprights.

When I bought the house in Maine I wanted an old Electrolux tank and found a Super J and a XXX at a yard sale.

Then followed an LX, an automatic E, my most beloved turquoise G and three XIIs. All eBay bargains that could not be passed up.

All of these with the exception of the XII's are poised for work in various rooms. One of the XIIs has an outlet for the XXX type hose, so some day that will be up and working also.

Sadly, because they are workers, they all have new plastic hoses. I also have a XXX style turbine floor scrubber which works very well on my kitchen and entry floors.

I enjoy the different personalities of the models as I use them. This morning it was the LX in the upstairs hall, massive, capable and beautifully built. The G is perfection, light, agile, so quiet and totally charming, following you around like a cheerful puppy.

My favorite has to be Singer....

I would have to say that Hoover made up most of my early years. My grandmother on my dads side had a succession of Hoovers including a 593 at our cottage, her model 70 at he house and later a cheapie Convertible of which model I'm unsure. All I remember is that it had a white metal base and bag, and the 1060 style hood in like a honey caramel color, without headlight.

We had a Hoover Convertible model U4003 thru my childhood and later had a Kirby Tradition.

I could name off so many more including my maternal grandmothers Sears Kenmore PowerMate canister ( the blue series) that she bought in 1978.

But as a child and having so many different brands over the years, I never had ANY contact with Singers. The Singer Sewing Center that was in our old mall Frandor, had a few of them left over when I started to frequent their window around 1982.

I remember them being so different looking than the Kenmore's at the Sears at the end of the mall. And even then noticing that they were somewhat similar except for the hood and handles being very different.

No one EVER had one. In fact most people I asked back then why told me that they felt that Singers had poor quality and were very loud and didn't clean as well as a Hoover.

Anyway this is a picture of my most favorite machine...

then there is the Dauphine

Some like the Renault Dauphine but I think the Dauphine is pretentious.

Any car company that has the balls to put a rear engine in a full size saloon is far from pretentious ;p

(hell Tatra did this with limousines, air cooled V8 mounted in the rear..sort of like a VW beetle from hell)
