This morning I went to the annual yard sale of a retirement community.

I had a funny dream earlier this week that I found an orange Hoover Constellation with a gray hose. No, I'm not so obsessed with vacuums that I dream of them. Anyhow, I awoke early this morning to go to the sale, hoping to find something fun, maybe an old Kenmore or a Hoover. I looked around outside the building, not seeing much of interest. Then I went inside and wished I hadn't. The sale had begun about 20 minutes earlier and inside was packed with people and tons of round tables of items and little room to move.

Mostly seeing jewelry and crafts on the tables, I wished I had stayed outside. But in the corner I saw some housewares! I looked and saw a yellow bagless Kenmore canister for $15 (ala Kmart), and a blue Eureka canned ham. Someone was trying out a newer upright, and a lady is looking at the yellow Kenmore's attachments and asking someone if it has a beater brush, as she wanted to use it on carpets - I started to tell her it doesn't. Then under a table I see - a Hoover Constellation! I had to look twice. It was actually a Penncrest though, in white, but with a flamingo orange lower dome. I check the price - it's $5 and says it works, but it looks like it was left in a garage. I stoop to look at it but there's too many people moving around to bend over and check. Then I meandered around looking at other tables, but seeing nothing, I go back to get the Hoover. This time, I see it is actually $3, not bad! It seemed to weigh a ton! Finally I got back to the other side with it to pay.

I went to another yard sale and found a Portapower, but decided to leave it, they're common.

When I got home I opened the Hoover to find a fairly clean interior, but a bag completely stuffed with dog hair! I tried to save the bag, but it smelled bad, so I had to toss it. I think the vacuum weighs half of what it did since I removed the bag. LOL

I'll post pics later.

I still need to give it a good cleaning and wax the paint. I haven't cleaned the hose or wands at all. Unfortunately the only attachment with it is the crevice tool. As you can see someone taped the hose and the plug is an old replacement.

Thanks xraytech. I plan to keep it for now.

I have a few questions. What year(s) is it from? How do I fix the wands? Where can I find attachments and bags?

Also, can a moderator remove the incorrect photo in reply 8 above? Thanks

Thanks Hotpoint, I too like the Constellations. I think this is the first one I've seen in person, surprisingly.

Anyone have any ideas on my questions above?

attachments will have to be salvaged from other connies or online, post tti era, replacements simply do not exist. and you can find "j" bags by the ton on ebay for cheap. vintage and brand new. thats all i can offer for help.

Incorrect photo removed!

That is a super cool machine... I've only seen one of those in person. Definitely on my 'want' list. I'd say that's probably from the late 60s or early 70s.

As others have said that takes "type J" bags which are plentiful on eBay or many vacuum stores. Attachments should also be somewhat easy to find, any of the basic Hoover attachments will work. The hose-end may be more difficult to find, but I imagine with some perseverance you'll find one.

Thanks for removing the photo Fred, and thanks guys for the information. I started working on the hose. I removed what seemed like a whole roll of electrical tape (LOL), to find a split as I suspected. I think I can just cut off the broken part of hose and reconnect it to the coupler.

Nice looking Connie. I have a blue one not sure of the model number. Unfortunately, the screws underneath the lid are rusted, so I can't remove them. The only place it has rust on it's body, darn! Fortunately, the motor sounds great. Need to purchase a filter for mine.

Mine still has the original filter, but I'm thinking about replacing it. You can use a bonnet like you would use to polish a car for the filter.

Unfortunately I can't get my Constellation to turn on now. The plastic switch feels loose, so perhaps it has broken?

Found a constellation close to the rubbish!

Hugs to all members of this forum, it's my first post and I apologise for my bad English.
I found a little gem close to the rubbish: hoover constellation s3341.
I cleaned the motor, changed the electric wire and it works great!
Unfortunately the hose is seriously damaged and I need to change it.
I found several websites with this hose, but out of stock.
Do you have any suggestion to find it?
Thanks
Marco - Italy

Welcome Marco, tu parli la bella lingua italiana, grande piacere, but don't worry about "your bad English", there are a number of people here which English is our second language. Those which English is their mother tongue won't have problem understanding you. The rest, we'll manage one way or the other. Take it easy. Gus
PS for those who don't understand Italian, I said: you speak the beautiful Italian tongue, great pleasure. Sorry.
