I brought a lamp in for repair to a long-established electrical shop here in St. Charles. They have been in business here for years. I noticed that they had a Hoover logo in the window when I passed by every day but never imagined that they still sold Hoover vacuums. We had an electrical store that sold all kinds of appliances in my home town in the 50s and 60 including Hoover vacuums, washers, etc. I thought that this was a hold over and that they just sold and repaired light fixtures. Well, what to my surprise when I brought the lamp in but there was a Hoover Innovation on a cardboard stand, having stood there for 20 years! It was dusty but cleaned up well. Here she is, brand new!

What bags can I use in this thing since it seems that B bags are no longer available?

Post# 16367 , Reply# 3   7/14/2007 at 21:29 (6,102 days old) by vacmeister76 ()

Hoover type A bags (standard or micron filtration) will fit.

Yep.

What he said.
A Bags work and you just fold them down. The type B bags were not around very long at all. Type A packages should also say "for Innovation, formerly type B."
Congrats on your find! I have that model, and it is a great cleaner! Just be careful when you carry it, those handles (handle release mechanism) were weak~they had a lot of problems with those

Weren't those made in Scotland and imported?

Great machine. I had the opportunity to use Fred Stachnik's Innovation before he moved. I like the tool conversion on that model. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that model was popular/originated in Europe. I somewhat recall a connection to England. Am I right?? Anyone, Anyone ...

Yup.

They were manufactured in Great Britain.
Fred, what are the first four numbers in your serial number--the month and year it was produced..
You have to put the handle in the operating position, and look inside the opening between the hood and the bag housing to find the model number sticker

Now, why didn't this model make it in the U.S.???
Was the Concept 1 the alternative that grabbed hold?? Or was it the Elite series??? What is your take?? Please advise. Thanks!!! (Sound a little corporate or what??

Attention Dial-a-Nap...

Greg
Guess where Ida found this gem. Do you recall the store with the Hoover logo in the window that we drove past on our little outing to retrieve my credit card? It looks like we should have taken a detour and checked it out.
Ida,
Congratulations on the great find. I can't believe that vacuum was just sitting there unsold for 20 years. I guess that just goes to show that there are many treasures still out there to be found. The vacuum fairies are definitely looking out for you.

Mike you make an excellent point. I too have a feeling that there are a lot more treasures out there just waiting to be found. Another example would be the rebuilt Electrolux G's that Fred found. We all just have to take the time to explore.

Is 0588 (May 1988?) Also Fred, the cord has become somewhat sticky from sitting in the cord reel so long. Any suggestions? I tried Dawn in and 409, but it still is a bit tacky. I'll drag out the tools from my other Innovation and take a pic. Aside from the complicated mechanism for the brushroll, its a nice machine and a good cleaner. I will track down replacement belts - it takes two different ones. Two of these machinese won cleaning competitions in St. Louis
PS. I almost had a case of the vapors when I walked in the door and saw that machine on display.

With your great vacuum karma you should start carrying smelling salts with you.

Fred..
Congrats on the Innovation. You have really good luck finding these brand new machines...the 53, the floor washers, etc. I have one too and it really works well. I have to second the statement made by other Fred...watch the top of the handle and the release. I thought these were made at the Perivale plant. Can anyone confirm that? For your sticky cord situation, have you tried "Goof Off"? I have a polisher from the early 1960's that Buffalo Joe gave me some years back and it is still sticky. Joe even tried gasoline on it (outside of course) and nothing has worked. I am not sure what makes cords like this. Let us know if you can get it clean. I bet it runs great. I use "Z" bags in mine

Perivale........

Hi To
Sadly cleaner production at Perivale stopped in 1982- although the head office stayed till 1987. These were made in Scotland at the Cambuslang plant
On the subject of export machines at this time it was a 2 way thing :)- we sent you the Turbomaster/Innovation and you sent us the Turbolite/Elite

Seems that we got the better end of that deal! Those Elites are "ok" but nothing compared to our Innovation. Thanks for clarifying where they were built.

We definitely got the better end of that deal. Here is the Innovation with the tools. Thanks to everyone who sent me the link for the Ebay auction for the new tool set. I actually got a set for the other Innovation I have. These machines have the Quadraflex agitator - hard to beat for carpet cleaning. Two of them won the cleaning competitions. The belts are a bit stretched out from sitting for 20 years but I was able to track some down. Seamus - I will be contacting you about the Air Freshener Discs

Can't wait to see that in person too!

I had one of these, the electronic "total system" like Seamus had, lit up like a christmas tree it did..

Absolute monster too, you'd think it was self propelled but it was actually dragging itself across the floor with it's brushroll, even tough old Ian had trouble wrangling that particular gator ;p

I have to say I think the Turbomasters / Innovation's are one of the best Hoover's ever. Here in Australia we had two models the U5096 Electronic Total System and the U5094 Total System, I have both in the collection along with a U 5132 TM Freedom bagless a U4362 Softbag and a US Innovation Softbag. Here's some pics

I changed the belts. Wow! This machine was not designed to have your average Mrs. Smith housewife change the belts. It takes strength and some engineering knowledge to get those d@$m things on. Finally did it. That machine now runs like new. Wait a second, it is new! I have a new appreciation for little Fred changing the belts on my other Innovation.

OMFG OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark. (ozhoover)

Thats the Hoover Turbomaster We had 1988 - 1996 how i never thought id see that model again especially in the colour we had it too!, I feel very emotional right now because it was the first vac at home I was ever able to use from the age of 6. Was sad to see it finally die after not really being used from Aug 1994 when we got our Dyson DC01, the turbomaster was used as a top up cleaner to use daily for minor spills etc.

If I could turn back time id of kept it and given it some love,

Thanks for the pic, you made my year!

Rob
