Here is a question for you guys - Did JMB and Electrolux ever work together ?

The reason I ask, is because I've noticed that Electrolux uses the exact same hose for some of their cleaners as my 2008 JMB SC1056 has.

I'm sure it isn't a coincidence the hoses are so alike!

could be any number of reasons

The hoses may have not been made by Lux but by a contractor who holds right to use them on other cleaners as they see fit. More likely the case I think but then again Lux may have once made them for themselves and supplied to JMB aka Littlewoods whomever once they had finished using the design themselves. Or even sold the design rights and tooling to that particular hose manufacturer.

I daresay as the Lux Contour style was used by Dirt Devil and JMB to a degree once Lux had finished producing machines in that style they supplied the machines to DD or JMB or sold the tooling to make those machines and the design rights. IIRC they were budget machines around the £50 mark.

Blomberg for Currys also had a rip off Hoover Turbopower 2 which came after Hoover stopped production of those . Considering Hoover, Dyson Vax and Lux tend to take eachother to courts pretty regularly over infringements Id be tempted to think they did sell the designs or the likes of JMB and DD might have been crushed for copying. They certainly would of tried anyway.

JMB

Jamie, JMB are not actually a brand. They're just rebadged Dirt Devil machines for Littlewoods (kind of like Proaction and Bush to Argos) and were pretty crappy machines. A friend of mine from school's Mum had one in turquoise branded Dirt Devil years ago and there was also one in red that was sold through pound stretcher. I imagine Electrolux sold the design of the contour to Dirt Devil once production had ceased. I have to say, the Dirt Devil and JMB branded versions were not a PATCH on the original Contour/Airstream/Airclean machines

Ah, I see. I thought JMB was a brand seeing as I have an old 1990's portable television which says it is a JMB (same logo).

As for being crappy, I've got to disagree with you there! My one has worked perfectly for 3 years without a single repair.

It cost £10 brand new from Littlewoods and hasn't let me down at all.

And also, with a fresh bag, the 1400W motor will suck blood out of a stone.

Ive added a photo of my Dirt Devil U6102. It is a clone of Hoover's Turbopower 2 but has:

Slideable variable suction control, 1100 watt motor.
Bag indicator
Same Hoover built in hose at the back, but is a lot shinnier and doesn't feel as well made.
Same Hoover tools but again suffers from cheaper plastic quality.
Auto carpet adjustment (i.e no selector).

Compared to the Turbopower 2/3 (I've had several of these models and whilst they're good, they're also heavy and the rear spindly wheels mark carpeting.)

I bought the Dirt Devil in 2004 after seeing it at a Cash Convertors shop - it was a totally brand new model. Sadly it broke five years later, my Turbopower 2 has still outlived it.

Whoa that Dirt Devil looks absolutely awful!

Give me a genuine Turbopower any day over that!

Sebo_fan, if my memory does me good service (and these days it so often doesn't), one thing which seperated the Dirt Devil from the Hoover on which it was based was the automatic floating head, like the Panasonic and Dyson cleaners have. Is this so?

Yep - and jm - for your info - the Dirt Devil 1100 Turbo-power did a greater job at pick up than the 900 watt limited edition Hoover Turbopower 2, despite having NO manual adjustment so, VP as stated previously this vacuum had no manual height selector. Dirt Devil fitted springs on the front wheels, so it did adjust to floors and felt very light when gliding.

The only aspect I didn't like about the Dirt Devil was that it was impossible to fit a Hoover Activator brush roll, despite Dirt Devil using Hoover's established design. Dirt Devil had fitted "made to measure" points at the side and the brush roll was very short bristles compared to the longer bristles on the Hoover brush roll. I've just added another picture of the rear view of the Dirt Devil and as you'll see, it's nearly the same as a Turbopower 2/3.

But if you look at the picture here, you'll see that the rear wheels are set closer rather than wider on the original Hoover design. I preferred that set up as these wheels didn't mark the carpet or look as spindly as the ones on the TP2/3 design.

No doubt it did a better job at cleaning than the 900W TP, but compared to the 1000W version with the Turbo button, I'm yet to be convinced it could beat that!

Don't get me wrong, if I saw one of those at the side of the road, I'd take it and save it, but it'd never replace my Turbopower 1000 at being my "baby"!

I think there must be something wrong with me - I'm in love with a Vacuum Cleaner!!

Oh well, it could be worse, I could be in love with a Dirt Devil ha ha ha, at least a HOOVER is a good brand to love.

Yeah but my Dirt Devil would beat your 1000 watt TP3 - it has a 1100 watt motor and far quieter when set to low! But I know what you mean - you can't beat an original design vacuum.
