So I have been having conversation with Doug and we have been discussing the history of vacuum cleaners and their power nozzles and he informed me that the airway was one of the first I was just curious to see if anyone here has one of the earlier vacuums with power nozzles upright or canister and maybe I you had some picture that would be great thanks? well once again since there was 40something odd views

and no responecs and i KNOW we have posting members that know the awnsers to this....ill take it opon my self to awnser....

yes Air-Way was techneclly the first although it was on a upright...but the first for the cannister was the Lewet in 1958, wich was later recalled due to a electric want system the actually used the wands as the electrical connection, and people kept ketting shocked, then after was Compact with the ABC (Always Beuaty Clean), and the Kenmore was folowed right after and there PN was very simallar to Compacts in alot of ways, then good old Electrolux in 1959 with the classic but not frogotten PN1.

then by the earley 70's or even late 60's Rainbow finally offers the Whirlpool power nozzel, for people with high pile shag carpets, and was no offerd unless that was the absolute case....and Eureka dint come out with a Power Nozzel till 1973, and then Rainbow, private labeled there PN, and in 1978 Compact also used the Eureka nozzel, and airway in the late 60's had a power nozzel called the Don Clarke, wich was actaully a upright F&G Eureka with the bellows and handle turned into a wand sytem, and that was a VERY short lived nozzel due to a lawsiut from Air-Way, then Air-Way in the earley 70's created the Rugmaster power nozzel, a big wide meatal cased nozzel the was alot like the fliter Queen nozzel in alot of ways....then in 1978 hoover finally joined the bandwagon with the Celebirty, and that power nozzel was used under the Fair-Fax name for a while , as well as the rugmaster and the Eureka nozzel.

and thats really the most improtiant of the history.....

Also if you do a search on the forum there are some threads about the early power nozzles and when they were introduced.

One more...well maybe!

Lewyt had a friction driven carpet sweeper attachment about 1952, not really a power nozzel but could be considered the prelude to one.

A Bit of Inaccurate Info:

Vodhin's site has one bit of info that he misinterprets. On the Kenmore machine he discusses last, he states that it must have been made between 1976 and 1980, because it has the Olympic emblem on it. What he's calling the Olympic emblem was a stylized logo representing the rotating brushroll of Kenmore's Powermate. There are four circles in that logo, not five as are found in the Olympic logo. And since the machine is blue, I'm pretty sure it's earlier than '76; if memory serves, Sears had turned its entire vac line Avocado and what Sears called "Lemon Smoke" by then.

I saw a lewyt's power nozzle with a date stamped into the housing of 1956 and they introduced it to the market in 57 so that leads me to believe the Lewyt was before the whirlpool/kenmore. I believe it was 1958, elux 1959 and compact 1960. Then we did have Rainbow in the late 60's using the whirlpool L shaped nozzle as well as Oreck CVR upright head used as a nozzle only offered to people with shag ( or so i'm told ). Don Clark's first power nozzle was a hamilton Beach upright in 1968 and I believe they experimented on the turquoise 88 before the mark V. Royal, Water Matic, Fairfax, Airway, all used the Royal made big Rugmaster. i've heard it started in 1972???? Also someome on here said at one point that Hoover used one of their coffee can uprights as a power nozzle for early central vacs??

I had forgotten about the power heads for the stationary cleaners. I have seen the patent for the Hoover one but, if memory serves, something was said about it not being known if it was ever put into production. At the same time though, someone must have been producing one as the Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon, which was built in the nineteen teens and included a "stationary cleaning system" which is still in use, has a two prong twist lock outlet beside every vacuum connection. As these arent found anywhere else in the hotel I can only assume it must have been a connection for an early powerhead. Wish I knew what they looked like but all the original parts are long gone.

danemodsandy, I believe that blue Powermate nozzle would have gone to a Kenmore canister from the early 1970s. Consumer Reports noted in their 1971 issue that they were available in either the green or blue. I was a bit confused too as I thought the blue ones didn't come out until 1978 or so. I am not sure whether the canister that goes with is the plastic one with woodgrain printed top and attachment caddy that stores on top or inside, or if it was the metal version with the crevice tool slot on the side and tool compartment on top. I think by 1972 or '73 they had the plastic version sold that same Powermate. It's definitely earlier than 1976 though, they had the later Powermates with woodgrain top by then that replaced this one.

Kenmore blue

Sandy, you are correct. If I remember right, this blue powermate was from 1968/69 to 1973, I think. Avacado debuted in 72 I believe

I know that in 1971 a neighbor of ours had a Sears Kenmore Central Vac installed, and it came with a PN,,the exact same as the green one shown here, only it was WHITE, with a permanently attached white wand. That PN did have the 0000 overlapping rings PowerMate logo on it. I was vacuum crazy by then, and the lady of the house was older, and HATED to vacuum,,so i got to use it many times. It was the first Central Vacuum i have ever used or seen before.
The hose had the cord straps to hold the PN cord on, and the central vac inlets had a little metal tab that you pushed with your finger to activate the system, or turn it off. The door of the inlets didnt activate the system.
The system also came with a white attachment kit that held the floor brush, crevice tool, dusting brush, ect. and it came with seperate chrome wands.
Have never seen a set up like it since.
I do remember it was an excellent Central Vac, and the PN was very powerful when it was brand new.

this was the model 116.22950C put out in 1972 - there was also a two tone blue version of this machine out at the same time which is what the power head on Vodin's site is from.

forgot about that

Kenmore had a white 12 inch powermate. As I remember, the white was supposed to be for the central vacs! In my opinion, the 12 inch powermate and the later 14 inch were some of the best power nozzles made. As for the OOOO, that was the powermate logo till 1981 or 82.

I am new to the forum but I have an RCA/Whirlpool pn that is aqua,it is motorized.
It is missing the bottom plate and the inlet hose has a split in it. I haven't started cleaning it up yet. I am still looking through my inventory to see if I can find the bottom plate and the main unit. Anything you all could tell me about it would be nice.

I cant remember where I saved this picture from, possibly a posting here or on ebay, but from the colour scheme its possible that the powernozzle above is from this type of machine as it is a Whirlpool and, from the power hose in the picture, we can assume that it did have a powernozzle at one time.

Collector2,
I think you may be on to something. The cuffs on that hose seem to match the elbow on my p.n. I will have to look around some more and see if I can find the main unit, if I have it or any other components.

Kirbyvertables,
Yes, it is a compilation of tri star heads and parts. Some are just sitting loose.
Thanks for the info about the age of the p.n. I do plan to clean it up and replace the inlet hose. I am a bit of a purist tho, so I won't replace the inlet until I find an aqua hose to use to keep it color matched.

I also have alot of Kirbys, I am just starting to sort through things and get them together. The picture just shows one part of the kirby corner I am sorting and organizing after too many years.

Goadie2,
Thanks, perhaps once I organize things alittle better I will share pictures. I am just starting to restore some. I am still learning what to use to restore and polish and clean them. If anyone wants to share the best products to use and what not to use I would be interested in learning. I already know how to buff Kirbys, and how to rebuild them, Restoring other brands is rather new to me.

Kirbee,

For polishing aluminum machines such as Kirby's, I use Mother's Magand Aluminum Polish. It works great! For polishing chrome, I use Turtle Wax Chrome Polish which also works great! To polish the head, if your talking about the powernozzle, I would just get a damp cloth and wipe it down.

Powermate1970, do you know what year the two left-most vacuums in your photo are from? It's a little confusing to me as Sears sold a few different canister styles at the same time in the 1970s.

That rounded 1964 canister above must have been a lower end model. A relative gave us a similar one that was from 1983. It was brown and tan and didn't have the handle on the front. It was straight suction and had generic brown plastic tools and also a brown Sears plastic carpet nozzle.

Powermate 1970, thanks so much for the pics. Your blue Kenmore PowerMate vac with the woodgrain panel on top is a dream vac from my childhood and im still drooling over it. You are sooo lucky!

We had a large shopping mall with a large Sears store where i lived in the 1970s to early 80s.
Everytime we went to the mall, (which was often as there wasnt much else to do) i would always visit the vacuum center at Sears.

I was on a first name bases with salesmen!

( i was just a dumb kid with not even a penny to my name)

The salesmen would let me run the vacuums (if they werent busy with customers) as they were always kept plugged in and ready to show. I often thought i knew more and cared more about them than they did!

Anyway, i clearly remember when Kenmore changed over from the green machines to the blue,,and i was absolutely IN LOVE with the "Sears Best" machine with the woodgrain top,,and its Power Nozzle. The fact that the tool pack could be stored on top or inside the vac was just sooo awsome to me. And that PN,,,WOW.

The green machine was nice, but the blue was just that much fancier,,i thought.

I dreamed MANY a night of owning one, and asked Santa Clause MANY times for one!

(all we had at home was a clunky old Hoover Connie the spewed dust all over, was missing most of its attachments, and my parents were NOT sympathetic or interested in anything vacuum related)

And, afterall, there was no comparison from a brand new SEARS BEST Kenmore with a WOODGRAIN top and nifty new Power Nozzle to a clunky old worn out Hoover Connie!

Nope, never did get my Sears Best Kenmore with the woodgrain top, long hose, and nifty PN,,,but i did get all the other vacs i dreamed of owning.

Funny that ONE vac is THE one i never owned. Have come across a few over the yrs, but they were so beat up, taped up, and in such bad shape they werent worth saving.

Oh well, maybe someday!

Cole, the canister on the far left(gray/blue) is a 1969, I believe. The second from the left,(avacado green) is a 1972, mid line model. Brian, you are welcome. I actually have 2 sears best canisters in the blue woodgrain! Both 2899's from 1977. One is in pretty good shape. The other is in very good shape. They are awesome vacs! My quest is for a 1974 sears best. Same as the blue but in avacado green. My all time dream is to find a 1972 sears best model 2299.(I think that was the model) That was avacado green, woodgrain, but it had a 12 inch (old style) powermate with a headlight and GREEN WANDS! I just got a 1973 avacado green kenmore economy in the mail tonight. I will have to post a pic when I get it cleaned up.

AARRGGG! Your killing me here! lol Oh man, i wanted one of those blue ones so badly back then. Just thought they were about the coolest vac ever. They really are awsome. There is just something about the Whirlpool made Kenmores that makes them unique. (If you should ever want to sell one of your blue ones, let me know!

I did have a chance on E-BAY once to buy a white one with the orange rim,,and i think had the woodgrain top to the vac itself and the PN (not sure on that),,but it definatly was the same style vac, with the step on switch, same type of PN,,and had the 10 foot hose,,ect. BUT,,someone outbid me at the last minute.

Oh well,,i did get a Panisonic made Kenmore PN at a garage sale for a dollar,,just like the one in the pic with the carpet shampooer/vac,,,and i use it with a Compact ,,works great. Love how that PN digs in and grooms the carpet.

Which style do you need I have the black with the stretch belt, a black with the geared belt, and the red one, I have not plugged them in yet, but the housings on the black ones appear to be good, I haven't drug the red ones out yet to tell. they are known to warp where they hold the brush in. I also have not cleaned them up yet. How complete do you want it? email me the details if you like.

Powermate1970, can't wait to see the new one. Someone here though I forget who, has one of those top of the line 2299 with the headlight and green wands. I like the blue but really like the avocado. Other than the one my parents had, I've only seen two older Kenmores when I was young. One was metal with a raised top for tool storage, which was at a yard sale. The other was avocado with woodgrain, which was in the trash, but missing the wands and Powermate. I asked my mom if we could stop and pick it up, but she didn't want to as a friend lived next door to where it was, and the house where it was looked dirty so it was probably broken.

We also had one similar to the last pic you posted, but instead of the removable tool storage, it had a compartment with lid on top in the front. It still worked okay when my parents threw it away. Now I never see any of these around.

No, sorry I meant a front hose unit in beige with black bumpers, very similar to the right most one in your photo of the four vacuums above. The difference was it had a tool compartment with a hinged lid instead of the removable caddy. The tool lids broke easily as they had just little tabs for hinges.

We did have a 1987 swivel hose machine too but ours was a lower end 3.9 model with only an on/off pedal, otherwise looked like the one you just found. It too was a good machine.

Hi,
Wow what a collection, would you have a 13 inch front head for an heritage, legend two vac? I have been looking for one for a really long time.
I would pay a fair price for it and shipping.
Thank You

Robert,
I don't think so But I have so much that I am sorting through I may come across some, if I do I would be happy to let you know.

Is there any use for the old 50's model powerplants that the nameplate that was riveted onto the fan case is missing? It is frustrating but I have come across quite a few like that.
