These sears kenmore canisters from the 1960s and 70s may or may not have a guard (aka safety screen)covering the opening on top of the motor housing. To avoid injury from contact with moving parts,You should turn off and unplug before opening canister lid and removing motor filter.A motor safety screen should be installed over opening on top of motor housing to prevent contact with moving parts.you can get the part from sears or vac shop.If your model have plastic grid over motor housing or safety screen is already installed,no further action is needed.
