Hey guys... I was in the area of the Electrolux dealer and they were closed but I thought I'd share some pictures. I was actually going to work for them back when I was 19, but I chose Kirby instead (and had a horrific experience, I can't say if this would have been any better).... anyway, here are some pictures of the place through closed doors. The people aren't very friendly and the prices on bags is out of this world, but that's just how it is.

The have the Eurekaluxes to show people what not to buy... I'll admit that that Aptitude upright is truly awful, but the canister isn't so bad. I think the note taped to the machines is pretty tacky.

I tried to get the antique Electroluxes that they had above the "counter", but they didn't show up very well..... I don't even know what model they are.

Their current display, bring back the Guardian please! It's actually a very small place. The door between where the machines are displayed and the "counter" is where the training room is. It's full of chairs and has a TV....

The front window.... who in their right mind would put a paper sign in front of a displayed vacuum? These people need to be schooled!

Last one....

The "now hiring" sign.... they've had that same sign in their window since they opened.... well at least since 2002 I know for a fact because that was when I went there first, but very likely since they opened. I seriously doubt anyone can make anywhere close to that selling those things in this economy.

You know it is very odd, but the dealers we buy trades from are really pumping the units out. One would think in this economy that not too many folks would be willing to drop 3K on a vacuum, but two of the dealers we pick up are cranking out 50-100 a month. Recently a relative of mine started working d2d selling FQ's. Earned 3600 his first two weeks. Not too shabby in a down economy?

I would be imediatly put off by the notes stuck to those euro electroluxes and walk away, the worst thing you can ever do to a customer is to knock the competition infront of them. You just end up looking pathetic and worse still if you actually have your competitions machines and show your customer how "bad" they are you will often end up showing them the downfalls of your own product too with out realising it.

I see it all the time here, the Miele  agency up the road has a dyson dc25 to show how bad it is , I often wonder if they sell any mieles as the customers always end up coming to us to get a dyson.  However if they want a cylinder I sell them a Euro Electrolux ( its the only Electrolux we have ever had and is the origional one too) Electrolux Ultra one .

AND Never have a bad attitude with any customer its the fastest way to loose customers and business.

You always must be in a good mood no matter what the customer asks for. Some times we have customers coming in just to ask us about the miele they just bought. they want to know deep down that they have made the right decision normally as a family member has said " why didn't you buy a Dyson" I always tell them that they have bought a good quality machine. I give them a business card or sticker and tell them that although we do not sell miele we do sell the bags and would be happy to help out with any questions. They normally come and buy a Dyson from us the following year.

notes on vacuums

I think the dealer is just pointing out that the mass market Electrolux vacuums are built by a different company. Aerus Lux is in the unenviable position of explaining what happened to their name. Some of the mass market Electrolux vacuums have been far from reliable. If you're attempting to sell high dollar machines, you don't want your products confused with cheaper mass market machines.

I kind of agree with you. Before I found this forum a while back (I'm not really a collector), I THOUGHT that the Door to Door Electrolux vacuums were now being sold in stores and that it was the same company. It wasn't until learning from this forum that that wasn't the case and that the REAL Electrolux was Aerus.

Agreed Jeff !

With the idea of helping people understand the reason for the same name (basicly). As well as the differences and why ! Yes, you do NOT need attitude with customers. Than again, people are very visual in general. They only know what they
see.
I would also add at this point. That once again. If a D2D sales person has a good distributor backing them with good training, product and helps get them in the door (set appointments). Sales people can be very succeful during a down
economy !! Truely, if the customer can get the credit, they have the Vacuum .

Think about the discussion yesterday on how many Kirby Classics, omegas and Classic
III's were sold during the dates of 1970-1978. It was a down economy due to highest gas prices we had ever seen. It was the Nixion Oil Embargo. NO lights for Christmas, just on the tree. NOT these extraganzas in neighbor hoods now!

One added note at this point, which reminded me of all of this. Expecially talking
about Electroluxs to start off with. The 1205 Lux came in the late 60's, after the succes of the G hitting big time sales. The 1205, with a PN was selling like
gang busters too. Why easy credit, in the early 70's and on thru the decade. That
again is why you used to find a lot of 1205 and Model L's used at sales, and etc.

As noted above, Aerus really doesn't have much choice, because most North Americans would be confused by the name(s). Perhaps it could have a few samples of Electrolux models (as above) and a couple of Aerus and (older) Electrolux cylinders, and have a sign saying something like:

"The bullet-shaped cylinder vacuums you may be used to as "Electrolux" are now being sold under the name "Aerus", exclusively through authorized Aerus dealers. Same quality, new name."

"Electrolux canisters and uprights are made and sold by Electrolux of Sweden, a worldwide maker of vacuum cleaners and other home appliances."

(Aerus needn't say anything about the quality, or lack thereof, of Electrolux)

P.S. It really doesn't help matters that pretty much every Aerus machine has "Lux" or "by Electrolux" or something like that, embossed on it. As much as I'm devoted to the old name, Aerus really needs to completely get rid of it and establish its own name if its going to compete with Electrolux. Time to move on, methinks.

OK....

No matter how we feel about their need to bash the fake Electroluxes, the use of paper signs taped all over the place is just plain tacky. I'd think that as much as they sell the machines for, they would be able to afford something a bit more professional to put the signs in. It seems to me that they should go into business printing paper signs since they seem to do that better than selling vacuums.

Lloyd, maybe they really are making money, I know when I sold Kirbys back in the early 2000s, when the economy was much better than it is now, nobody there was making money. I'm shocked about how much people are spending in this economy too.... I set appointments for timeshare presentations for a living.... I don't sell them, but I see how many people buy, and the numbers are just astounding given this economy! Even people who claim that they are unemployed and only making 20,000 a year manage to buy a timeshare, how I don't know!

A focus on nesting?

Maybe that's why people are buying expensive vacs in this economy. A focus on the home, perhaps, while cutting down on other extravagance? Don't know about the time share, though. Escapism in this case?

"fake Electroluxes"

Erm, considering that Electrolux Europe was in existence for longer than Electrolux US, I think the US Electrolux is actually the "fake" Electrolux who have been unfairly living off the name of a global enterprise... :\

And those paper signs, well, if they're slagging off against Genuine Electrolux, then Electrolux could actually sue that franchise for slander if they were to find out, and I doubt Aerus would be too happy with them if they found them doing that in their name!! Competition is fair, but, competing using slander, well, it's unethical and very childish, and could cost them...

Looks quite similar to the Aerus dealership near me; the new models are right in front of you when you enter, and not a lot of space anywhere else. As far as I can remember, there aren't even any chairs to sit on.The windows in the place are plastered with large block letter signs; you can hardly see in there unless you go right up to the door.

One thing every dealer should have posted up prominently is a list of prices for various "accoutrements" and services, so people know what's coming. I do agree about the tackiness of the signs; they could at least get someone to do them properly.

Re: the Electrolux name. Electrolux (Sweden) licensed the name for use by the North American companies to make their own distinctive line of vacuums, until 2003 (?) when "Electrolux" reverted back to the parent company. Any North American who's at all familiar with the bullet-shaped cylinders would know them as "Electrolux".

The new Aerus place near me is sort of similar-new models in the window display-and big signs and banners announcing vacuum repairs on all makes-what they do is look at your old vac and say its not repairable-or try to do a hack job fixing it-so you will cave in for a Aerus home demo of one of their new machines.I have seen some of the hack jobs on vacs people bring into the Greenville Sew&Vac.

Lux's at Walmart, Target, Sears?

Seriously? At Target, Walmart and Sears? What kind of prices are they asking for the units you have seen there? Retailing d2d vacs in the past has not proven to be overly successful in the past (FQ Princess), and normally ruins the market value of the unit. Oreck is a pretty good recent example of that. A year ago, a 10 year old Oreck would have sold for 80-125.00, since the change of ownership and the availability of Orecks in major retail outlets, a guy is lucky to get 80-125 for a current model.

If Luxs are available at major retailers, I may have to rethink my recent decision to stockpile Electrolux's.

Lux (Aerus) vacuums at Walmart, Target, Sears

Only this model; & I think they're refurbished?

This isn't the first time Aerus/Electrolux has been sold at department stores. During the 1980s & early 1990s, only the economy canisters (Ambassador, Diplomat, 2100) & uprights were sold there. That really surpised me a lot!

Lux Classics sold at dept. stores don't have the floor brush, crevice tool or accessory wands. Just the Power Nozzle, combo duster/upholstery tool & PN wands. You can purchase the floor brush, crevice tool & extra wands seperately.

I haven't really checked prices on them yet; but if I were to buy one, I'd buy it there instead of at Aerus store.

I come from a sales background and I know that when you're going to ask someone for thousands of dollars for a vacuum you want to make their entire experience as positive and happy-go-lucky as possible. I don't see how trashing competition as they walk in the door serves anyone any good.

Lux Classic prices

The Classic was $459.00 at Sears
$499.00 at Target
$399.00 at WalMart
$629.00 at Lacks Furniture (Includes floor brush, crevice tool, SideKick I & accessory wands)

At all Laredo, Brownsville, Mission & McAllen area stores. I don't know about anywhere else other than the RGV area of TX?

I may have to have my mother stop down and pick up a few from Walmart. Parents live in RGV. It is interesting that Aerus would kick its dealers in the shins, selling the same model at Walmart for 399 that dealers are asking 995 for. And the dealers in the door cost on the Classics was more than what Walmart is selling the units for.

Interesting ! but not new !

The Fact that classic electroluxs are in retail stores is not a surprise. Like someone said early on in this thread. They (lux) did it in the 70-80's, in Retail Catalog stores. They were plastic body models made in the Georgia plant. I wondered at the time, why doesn't lux try them in Vac shops that service every brand ? Again, like someone else said in this thread. Filter Queen did that in the 80's. As I had a princess model in my shop. Never did have any luck with selling it at a hi end price.
So it will be interesting to see how far and wide these Luxes appear across the county. Then how long they will be in the line up. Then again I have to truely believe, As much as I personally hate buying on Credit, That is what Sells high end machines. Along with a personalable and knowledgeable Sales person. Not a
Check out Queen (sorry, I've been one ) or a Stock person.

Just the Walmart, Sears, Target & Lacks Furniture stores along the TX/MX border do; (elsewhere in Texas do not) but I don't know if Aerus will be sold at in-home demos only elsewhere.

My guess is because most people along the RGV (particularly from Laredo to Brownsville) have very little or no carpets in homes; & many can't afford an Aerus down here?

My local Aerus dealer is the best dealer I've seen. You walk in, and see the new machines in the windows, but he has a "shrine" of sorts to vintage cleaners. HE even has a Model 24. Is very nice and fixed the switch on our Dyson DC25 for a good price (my mom didn't want me TOUCHING her precious Diesoon!) He has the same thing with the paper sign, but it does not smack talk Eurekalux. It only says "This is not a genuine Aerus Electrolux". Sales do not seem forced at all, and he has good prices on rebuilt Aeruses (Super J, for example, with a total rebuild is $500). The second the aforementioned Diesoon bites the dust, we're going to take a trip and get us an Aerus. (Fun fact: The guy has rings on the wall from where he used to stick his Electrolux "Thrift" Model T to the wall, walk away, and leave the vacuum hanging to the wall under it's own suction.)

my local aerus dealer

Our local person lives in Illinois, very pleasant to deal with, I bought an Aerus classic brand new from him, and also bought an electrolux advantage, I'm not sure when the advantages were made, the case looks just like the Aerus classic, but the motor is different. I love the sound of the two stage motor in the advantage. I text him every once in a while and ask if he has any canisters he wants to sell for a good price.
Regarding European electrolux models, the Ultra one is a good vacuum, I have one and bought my girl friend one for christmas a couple years ago and she really likes hers too. They are very quiet cleaners and they clean very well. I don't like the nonstandard hose end, but adapters are available to handle that.

After the boatload of Electrolux vacs went to the bottom of the sea, soon afterward the NA factory was licensed and as they say, the rest is history. Nothing was stolen in concept or otherwise from Sweden, it was just a very smart business move on both sides of the Atlantic.

Sweden's Electrolux Group AB is anything but a congenial corporation. They have swallowed many enterprises other than vacs. No product they manufacture since a buyout has ever been better than its predecessor and in almost all cases, significantly worse.

Aiden,

Are you talking about the store in the Southland shopping center? I've been in there before, the owner's a great guy! I talked with him for a long time that day, he showed me around the shop, his MASSIVE trade in pile, his vintage machines sitting high up (I tried my best to talk him out of his Model V, but no such luck!). Interestingly enough, at the time I was in there, he wasn't carrying the Platinum edition yet.....he said it was just too expensive of a model for his market and he was carrying the Legacy on down to the Classic.....of course, this has been a few years ago too!

This is an Electrolux Model 24. It may not be, though, as I am a little rusty on the models before the Electrolux Model XXX (30), but I'm pretty sure it is this one. It looks like this one, at least. This one is also called the Electrolux V.

That's a Model Five.....that's the one I was talking about that I tried to talk him out of! Back in the early days, Electrolux used Roman Numerals to signify model #'s. X is ten, hence an XXX is a 30, V is five, XII is a model 12, LX is a Model 60, and so on. In fact, check out the link below. It's from an interview with our very own Alex Tabor (Caligula on here). Toward the bottom, he discusses his model V (5).

"There was no such thing as a model 24."

Not in the U. S., but there was an Electrolux UK model Z24 which was manufactured from 1934-35 (sold in Canada a bit longer). That may have been why crazykirbydude used it.

Btw, I figured out that the Z signified that it was an original design; while a letter following it signified some sort of modification.

* * * * * * *

Re: reply 17 - I agree that the original Electrolux began in Sweden in 1919. I think the U. S. subsidiary (Electrolux Corporation) should have gone with a different name from its inception such as Electrovac or Electro-US; something similar to acknowledge the relationship with the Swedish parent company. Although, even if it would have gone with something totally different such as Aerus back in 1924, the name could have stayed the same all these years, and the subsidiary could have claimed original status.
