My favorite would have to be my DC04, or my DC07.

the DC28 Air Muscle . Dyson finally made a brush roll designed for the USA and the different types of carpets. I guess they realized we don`t have mostly bare floors or low pile carpet as many European,Asian,Arab& African countries do.

My favorite Dyson would either be the DC17 or the DC14. Both are great vacuums, and just about perfect for my house.

This one, cos it makes me laugh, both the "design" to make it look like a kids toy, and the failure, of course... :P

Hi sorry but thats a bit far fetched , In all my years working on vacuums and as a vecuum cleaner engineer I have never seen a motor catch fire like that , not unless something was added to it , petrol , turps .

The dc01 had a thermal cut out on it that would cut out the power the minute it starts giong bad , some smoke but thats it.

those machines also use a amatek motor wich is rather indistructable, the machine will fall appart way before the motor does.

Don't believe every thing you see on U tube , Just watch myth busters

Of course, if someone were to "fix" the thermal fuse because of overheating through clogged filters, it can happen, doesn't matter what make of motor or even the brand of vac, get Roger the Bodger inside such things and hey presto, you have fire... :P

utube clip of dc01 motor flame out

gsheen's profile picture

I was in charge of motor development & saftey testing at one of the company's I worked at , we would run a new motor to distruction , hundreds at a time , with and without thermal cutout , not once did I ever get a motor to thow out a flame like that , I got them to explode , implode , melt, smoke , lots of smoke but never catch fire.

I will say utube is full of guys who fix things to make thier vid look good,

I am a huge dyson fan I love them , I sell and service them for a living , a customer came to me the other day to trade in her kirby as she said her son showed her a clip on u tube of how brilliant a dyson was compaired with a kirby.

In the clip you see the guy vacuum up cat fur with a kirby and then with a dyson , the kirby leaves almost all the fluff behind.

will that was easy to manipulate simply undo the belt on the kirby, their is no way a kirby was going to miss that amount of cat fur  she bought a dyson any way as it was lighter but I told her to keep her kirby there is nothing wrong with it.

as a mater of interest why does every one compare a kirby to a dyson , they are in to totally differant brackets , like compairing a Rolls Royce to a Merc, both great cars but totally differant brackets

If the Kirby didn't pick up fur...

Either the Kirby had any of the following problem(s):
Belt disengaged or not on
No brush roll
Very worn bristles
Clogged bag tube
Broken fan

Otherwise, it'll beat any plastivac!

Thats my point , you can't trust u tube , by the way it was a sentria so I'm thinking it was a disingaged belt to make the vid look good.

Dysons are fantastic machines considering there cost. you don't need to fake an test  to make one look good.

Half the stuff posted on utube pitting one machine againts another is more trickery than any thing else.

I dont own a Dyson and it has been a while since I have used one, but the last time I used a Dyson the DC17 was the newest model and I thought that it cleaned much better than any of the previous Dysons available in the US. Even though its all plastic it did seem to be well constructed and the suction was pretty good. I'm a Kirby or Electrolux Upright kind of guy, I dont care for on board tools/hoses, but using the hose on the DC17 and the previous models was much easier than I thought it would be as I didnt have to "fight" with the hose to use it. It certainly was much easier to use the hose on the Dyson than compared to something like a S/P Windtunnel and it has a reach that was probably 3 times greater than the Windtunnel. I know their is a large different in price between the Hoover S/P and the Dyson but the tools on the Dyson were far superior to the crapy Hoover tools, so I guess you do get what you pay for.

I've noticed from Dyson's website that they no longer offer the electric powered motor head canister in the US. It seems the only canister with a "power nozzle" is the turbo nozzle machines. The majority of canisters marketed in the US have an electric power nozzle and its been that way for the past 30+ years. I was wondering if anyone has any inside information as to why Dyson would no longer sell their electric power nozzle here especially when the US seems like the perfect market for an electrified power nozzle.

Wait and see I think their is a new one coming , I am a dyson dealer and I hate those air driven turbine heads , hense we have never sold a dc23 new , ever. we have them in stock but for the same prce you can get a dyson upright that will do every thing the cansiter will do and clean better.

DC41

I've owned the DC14, DC15, DC17, DC18, DC22, DC23, DC25, and DC28. Among those, I've been very fond of the DC15, DC18, and DC28...

Then several days ago I bought the DC41 Ball, and I'll tell you this much; it's a quantum leap ahead of the DC25 in terms of attention to detail and build quality. The DC25, in my opinion, was a step backward from the DC15, for it was nothing more than a dumbed down DC15 that they only cared about making lighter and smaller.

I'm enthusiastic about the DC41 because not only is it designed better than the DC25, but it also deep cleans and actually grooms the carpet as well (I don't ever recall seeing my DC25 remove the tracks left from my office chair caster wheels from my deep pile carpets).

Hoover turbo power /master

gsheen's profile picture

thats because the turbo master and power are direct air vacuums , like Kirby , Sanitaire , Royal .

I love the turbo master , my mom had one but they and the turbo power were a bit like the early eighties Japanese cars the engine would last forever but the body would fall appart in weeks.

Some were I have a pic of me in a workshop with about 30 turbopower& turbo master vacuums standing in rows waiting for back casings. I remember when I first started to repair vacuums in the mid nineties it my dad and I would go down to hoover and fill up the back of our station wagon with those back casings each week.

I do love the turbo master and power , I have a turbomaster in my collection complete and at least another 10 needeng back casings , dito with the turbo power, I'm looking for a nice red one now

Give your dyson a service with new brush belt and filter and I bet it will put your turbo power to shame Smile

I agree the older direct air vacuums are better in certain ways , the trouble is that they blow much of what they have picked up straight back into the room you have just vacuumed ,

what model dc07 do you have a standard one orone with brush control, interestingly the USA versions have much better pick up than the UK versions due to a wider opening on the soul plate and a stiffer brisstled brush

I cannot wait for dyson to release the DC41 in the UK!

I have used and owned a lot of the dyson models. A few favourites are the early DC01's, DC07's (non clutch), I have warmed to the DC25 as you can clean a house REALLY quickly with it.

I have always wanted to try a DC17 and DC28, I would also like to know why dysons in USA have a wider opening in the soleplate, and some of the machine have the handle on the back of the machine?

Would also like to see a close up of the brush roll on the DC41..

The list goes on!!

Dyson

The Dyson DC41 Animal is the newest one and looks like the most solid model they have in the Ball and Animal Series. From what I am hearing is that it really combines a lot of their other models, and then better suction power and a larger dust bin.

Post# 155958 , Reply# 33   10/18/2011 at 22:15 (4,544 days old) by thissucks ()

i hate to be "that guy" but i will chime in by saying that dysons [period] are medeocre at best.

the statement that "dysons never loose suction -even a tiddly bit-" is a flat out lie. i just serviced a DC17 with no suction. i thought "clogged hose" checked that out nothing. then i thought "the fill tube" nope, the cyclone itself is so packed there is no suction, you pull it off and put on a new cyclone and the power is back.

anyone who has serviced a dyson's cyclone will find that there is a immense amount of fine dust buildup, recent machines make it so you must remove the permenent silicone gasket to access the cones, the whole process is a nasty dusty hour of work.

it is true that dysons dont loose suction when new and clean, put some miles and buildup on it and it will suffer. ALSO the huge reason why it looks like you picked up so much gunk and doesnt loose suction even when full is because it keeps the dirt loose and fluffy, ANNNND the volme you can take up in the bin is teeny tiny because it holds that huge cyclone, so even full there isnt much gunk in there to restrict flow.

they ARE easy to use however they are very very difficult to repair.

they are fun, cool looking machines with neat commercials, however the machine as a whole is no better than the eureka boss it sits next to at wal-mart. (i actually think the eureka is better)

in the end there are MUCH better machines out there for much less money, but! who else makes a million different models in a million different colors with a million different commercials?? no one, THAT is the key to dyson's success and appeal.

me im all about flat out proformance

Weather it keeps the dirt fluffy or not is not the point , you don.t have to spend a fortune on bags, in My house we used to  fill a milele vac bag twice a week. Lots of animals

I have a vacuum shop here in SA and we sell dysons And other makes  and are the Dyson accredited service agents for SA. the reason why the cyclones get clogged is that people overfill them. My oldest dyson a dc07 has never once had a clogged cyclone yet I get about3 a week in for just that. customers are lazy they make it so easy to empty the cyclone and yet they still wait till its overloaded.

I worked as a vacuum design engineer and even the company I worked for ( probably the biggest appliance company in the world ) admitted that the dyson was way better than there products.( internally of course)

I have spent most of my life working on designing and testing vacuums and nothing I have ever seen comes close to the all round convenience of a dyson. There are some that clean better but they use bags and those bags loose ther suction after each room you vacuum. So they only clean better in one room if that!

Here in SA like everywere else in the world the people who knock dyson and other bag less vacuums the most are the vacuum repair agents, wonder why , OH YESS thats why they loose revenue from selling bags

Bags are the bread and butter of a vacuum shop , repairs take time new sales are ok but you can make more money off bags in a day than sales of new vacuums there is no trying to sell the customer a vacuum , its just I need bags for a ...... and bam money made. Its good revenue for me too , especially miele bags but I won't bad mouth a machine just because it doesn't use bags , allot of the bagless vacuums out there are pretty alright to aslong as you clean the filters.

Its a trade off but its your choice

washing filters or spending money on bags as far as I am concerned the one is as bad as the other.

Post# 156259 , Reply# 35   10/21/2011 at 13:06 (4,542 days old) by baglessball ()

gsheen couldnt agree more, bagless isnt for everyone, but neither is bagged? Personally i cant understand why any would want to buy bags, plus i like to see what i have picked up. But thats just me!

The DC17 was probably so bunged up as the seal on the inside of the drum at the bottom of the cyclone had probably being pushed up. So all the dirt is sucked up into the cyclones instead of been spun out of them.

Ive used dysons for years and suction has never been an issue, unless the machine had been used to clean up alot of fine dust like plaster and soot. Wash the filter and away you go

I find most of them (generally the uprights) versatile> they attapt to different homes well. (i used to run a cleaning service)

I have a DC28 AirMuscle and a DC23 turbine head.  I love them both, but I use the DC23 more than the DC28, as our main living areas are hardwood floors...  I would definitely use the DC28 more often, if I had large areas of carpeting to vacuum.

Andy W. came to visit about 2 weeks ago and we hit Macy's at the Mall of America; we saw the DC41 and gave it a good going over -- even plugged it in and popped its cherry.  We were both very impressed with the DC41.  Much more thought out than the previous versions of the Ball uprights.  I kind of want one.

:-)

I have to say actually, I have just come across a DC04 absolute (purple/lime) I forgot how much I like these machines! Not to work on though!

And it has to be the early ones, with the black dot and arrows on the clutch instead of the tiny plastic finger. The ones with the black dot don't have vents in the brush housing, so stick to the floor in use. Plus the brush rolls have more bristles on them!

:D

Dc23

I will throw my hat in and say the DC23 turbinehead canister.

OK, it's the only Dyson I've owned, but it works very well for me. Carpet cleaning performance is great. The filtration is excellent! We're moving into a house that's primarily hardwood in the next year, so I'm excited it will be in its element. Just bought a Flatout hard floor attachment for that time.

I like it a lot. Seems to have a lot of suction!

What's the failure mechanism of the turbinehead, by the way? It was mentioned that the brushes over rev if engaged but not used on carpet.

It's too bad the hose isn't engineered to be longer. Dusting high places is very impractical.
